Kia EV9 Receives 5-Star Safety Rating from the Euro NCAP
The Kia EV9 isn’t shy when it comes to winning awards. This battery-electric SUV recently won the title of the best Family Car during Golden Steering Wheel 2023, and the Kia EV9 has won many more awards since it came to America. The South Korean automaker is upgrading its vehicle lineup with battery-electric vehicle (BEV) technology, as well as high-tech and safety upgrades. The Kia EV9 is no different, having recently been judged by the Euro New Car Assessment Programme (NCAP) and earned the highest safety rating the organization can give the all-electric seven-seater SUV – a maximum of five stars that highlight the vehicle’s impressive safety credentials.
Like the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and Highway (IIHS), the Euro NCAP takes new vehicles and reviews them for their safety features, standard basic ones and advanced systems, to demonstrate how well they handle an auto incident and how well they protect the driver and passengers inside. The IIHS calls the cars that pass these tests “crashworthy”. We’re not saying these cars are worth the turmoil of being involved in an auto incident, but if such a thing were to occur, their safety measures are worth the money spent. Like the IIHS, the Euro NCAP also puts these vehicles through several tests designed to test the safety for various scenarios.
Through the Euro NCAP, the Kia EV9 was assessed in four categories – adult occupant protection, child occupant protection, vulnerable road users (pedestrians, cyclists, etc), and safety assist (crash-avoidance technologies). The EV9 scored highly on each test, achieving 94 percent, 88 percent, 76 percent, and 83 percent, respectively. The latter is based on the availability of a comprehensive suite of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). The 2023 model comes with many standard and available advanced safety features, such as Advanced Highway Driving Assist (AHDA); Lane Following Assist 2 (LFA-2); Highway Driving Assist 2 (HDA-2); Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA-2) plus the ability to detect (1) vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists in front of the vehicle while driving (FCA-CPC), Blind-Spot Collision Warning (BCW) and Blind-Spot View Monitor (BVM); High Beam Assist (HBA);, Intelligent Speed Limit Assist (ISLA); Lane Keeping Assist (LKA-2); and many more.
When it comes to the test results, the Euro NCAP praised the EV9 for its performance in the frontal impact test that provided good protection of the knees and femur of all occupants, regardless of their size or seating position, thanks to a stable passenger compartment. Great news for families with little ones in the back, including six- and ten-year-old passengers. In a frontal collision, the EV9 demonstrated a moderately small impact, and the side barrier test scored maximum points. All-in-all, the EV9 strong protection of all critical body areas that could mean the difference between life and death for the driver and passengers. In case of an auto incident, there is also an advanced eCall system that alerts emergency services if such an event were to happen. The Euro NCAP also highlighted the vehicle’s Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) system, noting a high response time that avoided impacts in most test scenarios.
Like most BEVs coming to the Kia Corporation lineup, the EV9 rides on the Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP). This might change with the recent introduction of the Uni-Wheel Universal Wheel Drive System designed by Kia and the Hyundai Motor Group, but that might not be a thing for several years, if at all.
