An Ode to the Jeep Surrey Gala | Jeep Dealer Miami

September 4th, 2014 by

It may just be a matter of speculation, but we’re pretty sure Miami Lakes Jeep is the only Jeep dealer in Miami that will bother telling you about the Surrey Gala, an oft-forgotten relic of the 1960’s.

The Surrey Gala was a Jeep model produced from 1959 to 1964. It was primarily used at hotel resorts and delivery services. It may appear a little too over-the-top for modern drivers, but people drove the Surrey Gala across sunny Miami resorts and elsewhere fifty years ago. Here’s what you should about one the most unique models in Jeep’s history!

Fun Features: To match the relaxed, breezy environment where it often traveled, the Surrey Gala was open-bodied and known for its smaller size. The Surrey Gala lacked four-wheel drive, although given the fact it was only used for vacation hotspots, four-wheel drive was hardly needed. All Surrey Gala models were complete with a striped fabric top and Continental tires.

Colorful Exterior: The most recognizable feature of the Surrey Gala, however, was its diverse array of paint colors. The Surrey Gala was available in many colors not commonly seen on other Jeep models of the time period including hot pink, cerulean, and jade. Its bright colors made it appear as if it just bathed in Technicolor and allowed it to fit right in with the sunny tropical resorts where it often inhabited. A true trailblazer in terms of external appearance, and certainly ahead of its time, even to this day.

A Pop Culture Icon: The Surrey Gala cemented itself a place on the pop cultural landscape of the early 1960’s with its appearance in several hit movies and television shows. The Surrey Gala appeared in movies such as The Nutty Professor , Fun in Acapulco , and Ride the Wild Surf. It also made an appearance on the show Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C. Elvis Priestly also reportedly drove the Surrey Gala across Graceland.

The Surrey Gala is incredibly difficult to find today. Only 1,000 models were made during its time. If you’re looking to know more about the Jeep brand, come on down to Miami Lakes Jeep today!
