Luxury SUV Comparison: Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT, Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon and Range Rover
The Jeep ® Grand Cherokee SRT is a luxury Jeep model that competes and beats out the other luxury off-road SUVs, like the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon or Land Rover Range Rover. When you look at these three vehicles and all of their glory, the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT easily outshines the other two SUVs. Check it out.
Engine, Power and Trims
Aside from the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT, which is only available in one trim and with one engine option, the Range Rover and Mercedes-Benz G-Class are available in a few different trims and with a few different engine options. But to keep things fair and simple, we are just going to compare the base trim, base engine and base price for each vehicle.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT comes with the 6.4-liter SRT V8 engine. The engine is paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission that has manual paddle shifters. Together the engine and transmission produces 475 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. Impressive! All Grand Cherokee SRT models come standard with 4X4 drivetrain. The Grand Cherokee SRT accelerates from 0-60 mph in just 4.5 seconds, making it the fastest SUV on the market.
The Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon base model, the G550, comes standard with a 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine paired to a 7-speed automatic transmission and manual paddle shifters. This engine and transmission configuration produces 416 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque, which is impressive, but not as impressive as the Grand Cherokee SRT. The G-Wagon G550 comes standard with an all-wheel drivetrain and it accelerates from 0-60 mph in 5.8 seconds, which is 1.3 seconds slower than the Grand Cherokee SRT.
The Land Rover Range Rover’s base trim is the Range Rover LR-6 and it is equipped with a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 engine that generates 340 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque, which is substantially less than the Grand Cherokee SRT and the G-Wagon. The Range Rover LR-6 comes standard with four-wheel drive and it accelerates from 0-60 in 7.3 seconds, which is 1.5 seconds slower than the G-Wagon and 1.8 seconds slower than the Grand Cherokee SRT.
Off-Road Capability
When it comes down to it, all three SUVs are built to be off-road capable, but Jeep is the only brand that specializes in off-road capabilities and that shows when you compare all the 4×4 specs. The Grand Cherokee SRT comes with features like Brembo brakes, 20-inch wheels, Quadra Trac Active on Demand four-wheel drive, and eight drive modes including a 4×4 off-road mode and a tow mode, all of which increase the vehicle’s ability off-road. With that being said, the Grand Cherokee SRT allows for crazy fast off-road driving, and stable, smooth, high-performance driving in all situations. Additionally, the Grand Cherokee SRT has a towing capacity of 7,200 pounds and 13 MPG in the city and 19 MPG on the highway.
The Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon G550 comes with beefed up tires and wheels, standard 4×4 drive, and three locking differentials. All these features make the G-Wagon very off-road capable, but according to many sources not very on-road capable. Sources including _ US News _ and _ Jalopnik, _ Mercedes-Benz created a great off-road SUV, but did so at the cost of a good driving experience on the road. Not only is the G-Wagon said to be hard to handle when driving on the road and highway and its fuel economy of 13 MPG in the city and 14 MPG on the highway makes it the worst on this list. The G-Wagon has a towing capacity of 7,000 pounds.
The Land Rover Range Rover LR-6 also comes with several off-road features. Features include up to 35-inches of water fording, an all aluminum body and hill descent control add to capability and ease of off-roading in the Range Rover. However, the features that come standard on the base Range Rover just aren’t enough for most off-roading adventures. If you want a Range Rover to be as off-road capable as the Grand Cherokee SRT, you need to get the highest level trim, biggest engine, largest wheels, and the cost of all of that equipment adds up. The Range Rover LR-6 has the best fuel economy of the three vehicles, which is 17 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway. Additionally, the Ranger Rover LR-6 has a towing capacity of 7,716 pounds.
Price
There’s no question as to which vehicle is the best buy for off-road capability (Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT), but it is also WAY more affordable than the Land Rover Range Rover or G-Wagon.
