Italian criminals better watch out as there’s a new patrol in town now that the Carabinieri (Italy’s gendarmerie force) is set to receive 19 armored Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs for their anti-terrorism unit. The specially-prepared vehicles are slated to arrive by the end of the year, with the first few already on their way to officers in Rome. What makes the Carabinieri Grand Cherokee special? Not only its exterior but also its unmatched (and shall we say altered) capabilities.

Flashing blue lights on the grille and roof, combined with the classic Carabinieri blue paint scheme with red accents, adorn this Grand Cherokee SUV that takes crime-fighting seriously. An extra tablet powered by Android on a sliding rack allows the Carabinieri additional communication access, including the ability to access various different Italian Police databases while on the go. These SUVs will be powered by a 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel engine capable of generating up to 190 horsepower and paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Bad guys hiding out on some rugged hills? That’s not a challenge for this SUV, as its four-wheel-drive can conquer any rugged terrain.

Unlike the Grand Cherokee variants that you’ll find at Jeep dealerships , this Carabinieri version is equipped with full body armor, a bullet-resistant windshield, side windows, and even bulletproof tires. Reinforced suspension parts improve on-road handling overall. The Carabinieri Grand Cherokee is far from the first vehicle that Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) supplies for the force as their relationship dates back to post World War II Italy. The automaker initially provided Alfa Romeo vehicles as patrol cars, starting with the Giulietta model and eventually transitioning into the Giulia model as of 2016

Earlier this year (2018), during the summer, Jeep Wrangler vehicles were also delivered to the Carabinieri to patrol the northern Romagna coast. Affectionately called the Gazella, or Gazelle, the Carabinieri Wrangler patrols the hottest beaches on the Romagna coast Baywatch style as it drives directly on the shoreline. Not to be outdone by the modifications on the Grand Cherokee, this Wrangler is enhanced with a special Mopar One package that adds ruggedness and grit from the ground up. This Wrangler rides on large 17-inch Performance Gladiator black-painted alloy wheels that are outfitted with 32-inch Hankook Dynapro tires for optimal performance. Additionally, the Mopar One package also includes a two-inch lift with special shock absorbers for added ground clearance, a stabilizer bar, front and rear splash guards, and mudguards with side tangs.

Blue Flashing lights and sirens are also matched to a dark blue body-color and Carabinieri decals on the side, while features like a portable radio and a machine gun holder help complete the functionality of this law enforcement-oriented Wrangler. This Gazella (Wrangler) is powered by a 2.8-liter diesel four-cylinder engine capable of 158 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. Check out this beachside Wrangler below:
