Stellantis recently had a patent approved for a 3-speed gearbox. While this does not guarantee a new EV, the patent lays a solid foundation for the automaker to release high-performance electric vehicles. The latest concept from Stellantis is the Halycon concept. This futuristic sedan represents the automaker’s vision for its future EVs. Stellantis has introduced new EV platforms that will serve as the foundation for new models. Alongside these platforms are advanced platforms like STLA Brain and AutoDrive which will enable autonomous driving. The patent for a 3-speed gearbox demonstrates Stellantis’ commitment to introducing advanced electric vehicles. We’ll take a closer look at the patent and what it entails for the future of Stellantis and Chrysler.

Stellantis 3-Speed Gearbox Patent Hints At Advanced EVs

Stellantis recently had its patent approved for a 3-speed gearbox. Currently, modern EVs utilize a single-speed gearbox. This system provides EVs with the necessary torque and performance to compete with ICE vehicles. With a 3-speed gearbox, however, Stellantis aims to push the limits of an electric vehicle. This new system would enhance performance both on and off-road while improving torque control at higher speeds. The system is designed for EVs and hybrids, allowing Stellantis to create a diverse lineup. So far the automaker has not released any official EVs or hybrids however Stellantis has stated that it hopes to transition toward a fully electric lineup by 2028.

Looking at Stellantis’ patent, we see an assembly that incorporates several advanced components. These include three planetary gear sets that provide increased flexibility and traction control. The result is improved torque for off-road capability and balanced power and efficiency for on-road capability. Compared to single-gear box assemblies, the 3-gear box assembly would drastically improve efficiency at higher speeds. This setup pairs well with Stellantis’ various EV frames like STLA Large, STLA Medium, STLA Small, and STLA Frame.

Stellantis’ recent patent paints a strong outlook for the automaker. With its multiple frames and advanced technology, a new revolutionary EV could be on its way. The automaker’s STLA Brain, STLA Cockpit, and STLA AutoDrive platforms would enable features such as cloud connectivity and autonomous driving capabilities. They would also allow intuitive screen displays. The closest vision we have is the Halycon concept. The 3-gearbox patent paves the way for this future concept. For now, we’ll be staying tuned for more information.
