Help Prepare Your Teen Driver Ready To Drive Alone This Summer

Is your teen getting ready to drive? If so, you understand how much of a scary and exciting time it can be. Preparing your teen to drive to the best of you ability is key for their safety and your ease of mind. Follow this guide and let all the worry turn to excitement and pride!

Teach Them to Drive

Are you prepared to let your child take over the driver’s seat? Studies prove that many parents don’t prepare their child as much as they think they do to get their license. It seems like parents are great at showing the basics, but forget about that hazards that come with driving and how to avoid them. With that being said, the tips below will help ensure your teen is prepared to drive safely even in rough conditions.

• Don’t just take them out for practice during the day, make sure they drive at night as well, and many times, that way they are prepared for night driving and how it impacts their vision.
• Allow them to drive in all conditions. Up north that would mean snow, but here in Florida it means during rainy days. They need to get a feel for driving safely in any type of weather they could experience.
• Don’t just practice locally, on the same roads. Practice on all types of roads and during all times of the day including rush hour. The driving test may not require them to go out on the highway in Florida, but they will need to know how to, and you want them to do so as safe as possible.
• Teach them about distraction, keeping their eye on the road and monitoring other driver’s behavior. They need to know when and how to avoid accidents especially if another driver on the road is distracted.

Driving Classes

Driving classes have several benefits for your teen driver! First, it allows them to learn from a professional, who knows to teach them things you might not have thought of. In addition, your teen driver can rack up the needed hours and practice for getting their license even when all the adults in the family are busy. Finally, in many cases, taking driving classes will lower the new drivers insurance rates, which is an awesome bonus for mom and dad.

Are They Ready?

Okay, so they have practiced all they can, know all they need to know for the test, but are the ready to be driving alone? As a parent, it is your call to make that decision. Here are some questions to ask yourself, if you answer yes to all, they are ready to go! If not, keep practicing with them until you believe they meet all the criteria to be driving alone.

• Do you trust they will continue the driving habits taught by you and/or driving school even when no adult is present?
• Are they confident of their driving abilities?
• Do they understand all the driving laws including curfew, texting and driving laws, and more?
• Do they follow the speed limit and all the road rules?
