November 8th, 2021 by

A minivan has become so much more than that embarrassing station wagon previously seen in the carpool line. Today, it’s become on par with a luxury SUV, with its updated and modish design and avant-garde technological features. These aspects are truly embodied by the 2022 Chrysler Pacifica and the 2022 Honda Odyssey.

They both have been tested and proven to be reliable, excel in their powertrain performance, and are filled with infotainment and safety features. In terms of which one of these mini’s stands out from the other…keep reading.

Reliability and Quality

The Chrysler Pacifica has been ranked third in its segment for J.D. Power’s 2021 Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS), though it did not reach the top rankings for J.D’s Power 2021 Initial Quality Study (IQS). Despite this, the stylish wagon comes with various warranties and roadside assistance coverage, such as:

  • Standard warranty: 3 years or 36,000 miles
  • Powertrain warranty: 5 years or 60,000 miles
  • Hybrid system warranty: 8 years or 80,000 miles
  • Hybrid battery warranty: 10 years or 100,000 miles (10 years or 150,000 miles in California emissions states)
  • Roadside assistance: 5 years or 60,000 miles

Alternatively, the Honda Odyssey didn’t make the cut for the top three models in the minivan segment for this year’s VDS, but it did make it second place for 2021 IQS. The 2022 Honda Odyssey goes with the following warranty and roadside assistance coverage:

  • Standard warranty: 3 years or 36,000 miles
  • Powertrain warranty: 5 years or 60,000 miles
  • Roadside assistance: 3 years or 36,000 miles

Performance and Efficiency

Buyers of the 2022 Chrysler Pacifica have two engine options at their disposal. The fist is the 3.6-liter V6 engine which produces 287 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque. It’s matched with a 9-speed automatic transmission system and has either front wheels or all four with an available AWD system.

The Pacifica’s second option comes along with the Hybrid model, which uses a combination of a V6 engine with two electric motors and a battery pack, mustering up 260 hp. Additionally, the Hybrid PHEV uses an electric continuously variable transmission (eCVT), rather than a traditional automatic.

As a result, the Hybrid is heavier and a bit slower than its gasoline-powered counterpart. Still, J.D. Power’s autonomous testing experts have said that the response in traffic does well while the interior remains incredibly quiet and tranquil.

At the same time, the standard 287-hp V6 helps to produce a 3,600-lb tow rating. It is worth noting, however, the automaker doesn’t discourage owners from towing a trailer with the Pacifica PHEV.

FWD Pacificas powered by the V6 are rated at 22 mpg in combined city and highway driving; This rating only drops to 20 mpg with AWD. The Hybrid is also rated by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) at a strong 30 mpg combined and has an estimated 32 miles of fully-electric driving range.

The FWD 2022 Honda Odyssey is only powered by a regular V6 engine, but it’s the only one that you need. This 3.5-liter V6 drives silky-smooth riding on 280 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque, it’s also matched with a 10-speed automatic. It also has a 3,500-lb tow rating. This minivan has a rating of 22 mpg in combined city and highway driving.

Safety and Driver Assistance

Another significant factor for minivan drivers is safety. The 2022 Chrysler Pacifica brings along a slew of standard driver-aids, which encompasses a forward-collision warning system with pedestrian detection and automatic emergency braking. Other features involve lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, a blind-spot warning system with rear cross-traffic alert, automatic rear braking (activated while in reverse), and adaptive cruise control. The Pacifica model also has low-speed, automatic braking for the front to prevent you from bumping into objects when parking.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) awarded the upcoming Pacifica 5 stars out of 5 overall in safety. This year’s model also received a Good rating in all crash-test categories from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

The 2022 Odyssey also carries a bundle of standard safety features of its own, specifically dubbed Honda Sensing. This package encompasses front collision warning with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist (or as Honda names it Road Departure Mitigation). This SUV-like car also has standard Level 2 semi-autonomous driving assistance appearing as a traffic jam assist system that incorporates adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, lane centering/lane-keeping assist, and traffic sign recognition. Interestingly enough, the entry-level LX trim is the only model that doesn’t have the blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic warning. However, the rear-seat reminder system is standard on all 2022 models.

The new Odyssey also earned accolades in safety, such as a 5-star overall NHTSA crash rating and a Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS.

Infotainment and Technology

Entertainmentwise, the 2022 Pacifica involves a 10.1-inch touchscreen interface supported by the new Uconnect 5 infotainment system. Standards include wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration, as well as dual-phone connectivity and Amazon Alexa. The optional TomTom navigation system also uses over-the-air updates.

Then the optional Uconnect Theater package includes dual, 10.1-inch displays that enable rear passengers to stream content through Amazon Fire TV. This bundle also comes with HDMI ports, a 115-volt outlet, and a Blu-ray player.

The base LX comes with a 5-inch LCD screen and Bluetooth, while the rest of the models have an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment interface with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration.

The Odyssey Touring and Elite involve navigation, CabinTalk in-car PA system, CabinWatch rear-seat monitor, and a rear entertainment system with dual 10.2-inch displays, an HDMI port, a 115-volt outlet, and a Blu-ray player.

Who’s Actually Miniature?

For the most part, the 2022 Chrysler Pacifica and 2022 Honda Odyssey excel in all categories regarding reliability, performance, and in-car technologies. Simply put, the Pacifica just has…more, and especially regarding its powertrain options. For this reason, we believe that the 2022 Pacifica is the Queen Bee on minivan machines.
