Powering Up The Super Cruise System

General Motors (GM) prized possession, the Super Cruise system, is one of the most innovative driver-assist technologies currently on the market, and for 2022, it’s getting even more advanced and more accessible to other vehicles, such as the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra half-ton pickup trucks.

One of the main upgrades of the Super Cruise system is hands-free automatic lane changing, which will give the car the ability to access when it’s safe to pass a car driving in front of you and change lanes when permissible without any action needed from the driver.

Other advancements include hands-free towing, which is helpful for those moving trailers, and improvements in navigation.

This Super system was first brought to the automotive scene in 2017 in GM’s Cadillac CT6 sedan. It was during this introduction that we saw how the car was capable of guiding drivers to and fro over 200,000 miles of various highways across the States, all on its own. By utilizing both the GPS and on-board cameras, it compares the placement of the vehicle to its location in a lidar scan of the globe. Once the car understands its location, and it’s safe to take over operations, the Cruiser will literally take the wheel, as well as control the acceleration.

However, this doesn’t mean that the driver should then slack off, as they are required to pay attention in the same way as they were when they were piloting. In fact, the system involves technology that can sense whether or not the driver’s eyes are on the road. Should their eyes roam elsewhere, the system will start with various warnings before completely deactivating. If this is not the case, in most cases, there will be no need to take over.

The automaker says that this driver assistance feature will be found on a wealth of different vehicles such as the upcoming GMC Hummer electric pickup, the GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado pickups , the Cadillac Escalade and XT6 SUVs, and the Cadillac CT4 and CT5 sedans. Additionally, buyers of the 2022 Chevrolet Bolt will get to enjoy an older version of Super Cruise, which of course, will not include the lane change features. However, buyers of the 2021 Escalade models will get the new features in a future over-the-air update.

GM still needs to watch its back, as its fierce competitor, Ford, has plans to launch its own driving system, the hands-free BlueCruise, which is coming later this year in 2021 F-150 pickups, as well as the electric Mustang Mach-E car.

Another rival is the Autopilot system from Tesla. They also have a new beta version of its Full Self Driving features which even back automatic lane changes on the highway. On the flip side, the company says that the driver still has to keep his or her hands on the steering wheel to confirm their attentiveness…which completely defeats the purpose of the system.

While both Super Cruise and Autopilot aren’t necessarily newcomers on the market, they were not featured in any pickup trucks, which are the most popular vehicles in the States. In conjunction with Super Cruise and BlueCruise, these technologies will be brought to a new market of truck buyers in more ways than one.
