Differences in Maintenance for PHEVs, EVs and Gas Powered Vehicles
Different types of vehicles require different types of care and service. As you would expect, PHEVs (plug-in hybrid electric vehicles), like the Chevy Volt, and EVs (electric vehicles), like the Chevy Bolt EV, have different components than vehicles only equipped with an internal combustion engine, and those differences change up the way those vehicles are maintenanced! EVs and PHEVs are both relatively new in the auto industry, so if you plan on getting either type of vehicle, you need to know how to take care of them.
PHEVs
PHEVs require less routine maintenance and service problems than traditional combustion engine vehicles. PHEVs have a gas engine, so there is a need for the same routine maintenance that gas vehicles need, but since the vehicle can be powered by the battery, the engine and its parts are used less, so there is less wear and tear on the engine and there is less regular routine maintenance, like oil changes and other fluid changes, in comparison to gas vehicles.
Additionally, PHEVs have regenerative braking, and regen brakes work a lot different than brakes on gas powered cars and they also last a lot longer, so that’s great news, too.
EVs
EVs require even less regular routine maintenance than PHEVs. EVs run solely on battery-powered motors, so there is no engine and that means there are no oil changes, no transmission fluid, no spark plugs, in addition to several other things gas vehicles use to work. But that doesn’t mean you trade one type of maintenance for another, EVs don’t require any routine engine or transmission maintenance or repairs. Like PHEVs, EVs also have regen brakes, so their brakes also require less maintenance.
