Chevy is Killin’ The Fuel Efficency Game in 2017

Unlike the all-new Bolt or the Volt, the new Chevy Cruze Diesel isn’t powered by electricity, it runs on diesel fuel. Diesel fuel is nothing new, but Chevy’s new model is so fuel efficient, an average of 52 mpg on the highway, it feels like it is a new technology.

Why diesel? Diesel fuel is more fuel efficient than gasoline because it burns slower, as a result, diesel cars typically have a better fuel economy on the highway. A diesel’s fuel economy makes owning a diesel cheaper in fuel costs, and they can be a little gentler on the environment.

The engine in this Chevy Cruze is a 1.6-liter I4 turbo diesel engine, which can produce up to 134 horsepower and an impressive 240 lb-ft of torque. The fuel economy varies depending on the transmission. The six-speed manual transmission the Cruze has an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 52 mpg on the highway and 30 mpg in the city. However, both the manual and automatic transmission options provide the Cruze Diesel Sedan with the same city/highway combined fuel economy of 37 mpg.
