Why the Camaro Z/28 Doesn’t Have to Fake It | Chevy Dealers

A troubling discovery about the Ford Mustang EcoBoost has left Chevy dealers wondering, why would someone buy a car that has to fake it? Would you prefer your muscle car straight up or actively noise controlled?

On a recent test drive, Jason Cammisa of Road & Track pulled a fuse from the 2015 Mustang’s audio setup only to realize that the sound system itself was generating the engine’s throaty rumbling.

From a thrilling roar to a mere murmur, the EcoBoost was trying to fake it ’cause it couldn’t make it. If Ford is so enthralled with their new engine, then why did they feel the need to supplement it?

If their concern was that people might balk at forcing that type of engine into a car designed for speed, sport, and pleasure, it was a legitimate worry.

The Mustang’s 2.3L EcoBoost engine only offers drivers 310 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque while the Camaro Z/28 is bursting with a 7.0L V8, 505 horsepower, and 481 lb-ft of torque.

Seems like a pretty big performance sacrifice on Ford’s part. And it gives some explanation for why they incorporated Active Noise Control into the Mustang.

They had to find a way to amplify the engine’s less-than-exuberant acoustic output to keep drivers in the dark.

It’s hard to believe that ‘Stang fans even helped Ford in crafting the perfect tones to flood through the speakers. Wonder how they’re feeling now that the fuse has been pulled.

Even more frustrating for new Mustang owners is the fact that the Active Noise Control is not a choice. You can either live with it or pull the fuse, but then you won’t have any tunes to listen to either.

You could not find a more extreme contrast than the voice of Chevy’s Camaro Z/28. Built for the track, its V8 has a mean growl .

No enhancement needed there. It already comes with some good, old-fashioned pony car reverberations.

So if you’re looking for real American muscle that talks the talk and walks the walk, then investing in a Camaro is the way to go.

But if making “vroom vroom” noises is still how you get your kicks as an adult, the Mustang EcoBoost might be more your speed after all.
