The Ram brand has been slow to join the electric vehicle market, but it is determined to catch up and even take the lead in the pickup truck segment. If we are to base ourselves on the next-generation, 2025 Ram 1500 lineup, it becomes relatively easy to identify what the next TRX will house underneath its hood. Without question, it will be motivated by Stellantis’ Hurricane engine, the same 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline six-cylinder that powers the 1500, the entire Wagoneer lineup, and the Dodge Charger Sixpack.
Indeed, the manufacturer hinted that the next TRX will utilize a high-output variant of that engine. Enthusiasts can expect the new TRX to put down north of 550 horsepower and 475 pound-feet of torque. Admittedly, these figures are considerably lower than the 702-horsepower Hellcat V-8, but Ram could have a few tricks up its sleeve to compensate for this. It is not impossible to envision some form of electrical assistance, taken from the upcoming Ramcharger, to fill in for the output deficit.
How will Ram Claim Full-Size Off-Road Truck Supremacy?
Pickup trucks are not merely for hauling gear or towing trailers anymore. As the Ram brand has discovered, there is a significant market for not only performance trucks but vehicles capable of anything from rock-crawling to Baja-style desert racing. The automaker can therefore not miss the opportunity to carry on the TRX nameplate. In terms of off-road capability, consumers should expect even more go-anywhere hardware in the form of sturdier suspension components and improved chassis reinforcements. These should allow the truck to manage even higher and quicker jumps. Improved handling, straight-line, and braking performance are also expected.
“We have to evolve,” announced Ram’s Chief Operating Officer Bob Broderdorf. During a media background briefing on the new Ram RHO in April 2024, Broderdorf added that, “There’s a clear opportunity to leverage electric” drive technology for a variety of different takes on the Ram 1500 REV drive technology. In particular, many well-informed Ram insiders and others familiar with its product programs confirmed that the automaker is developing numerous ways to leverage the capabilities of battery-drive technology, beginning with the instant torque electric motors can deliver. For context, that is advantageous for off-the-line acceleration and rock-crawling.
The TRX will Make a Comeback
For now, Doug Killian, the chief vehicle synthesis manager on the Ram RHO program, would only state that “People like the sportier side of EVs.” To that end, even though Ram officials are not confirming if or when a new TRX will replace the trim ending its run this year (2024), an all-new version of the behemoth is considered a certainty. Readers would also be remiss to rule out the possibility that the next variant of Ram’s most assertive truck might go electric. Sources suggest that is a real likelihood as the automaker becomes more confident about the potential for battery technology.
