Ram showcased not one, but two pickup trucks on November 7, 2023. While the 2025 Ram 1500 will undoubtedly remain the prominent seller for a while, the truck manufacturer is gearing up for a two-pronged electric vehicle approach. The plan not only includes the Ram 1500 REV all-electric truck, but also the 2025 Ram 1500 Ramcharger, the first range-extender in the pickup class.

It is no secret that pushing a massive truck through the air places a large burden on the propulsion system. The solution so far has been an abundance of power and a corresponding increase in battery capacity. It is a spiral that plays havoc with the workhorse nature of pickups. That said, Ram believes it has found the answer with the Ramcharger, which pairs a reasonably-sized–for a truck–92-kilowatt-hour battery pack with a dual-motor, all-wheel drive setup. For comparison, that is significantly smaller than the battery packs in the Ram 1500 REV, which will utilize a massive 168-kilowatt-hour pack for the standard range trim and a 229-kilowatt-hour pack for the long-range variant.

With 663 horsepower and 615 pound-feet of torque, the Ramcharger is swift, reaching zero to 60 miles per hour in 4.4 seconds. It also has an electric range of 145 miles. According to Tim Kuniskis, Ram brand CEO, “With unlimited battery-electric range, the Ram 1500 Ramcharger is the pinnacle of the light-duty pickup truck segment and the ultimate electric truck.”

Propelling the Ramcharger

A 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine is on board the Ramcharger. Of note, the engine has no connection with the drivetrain, instead functioning with a 130-kilowatt generator to recharge the battery. The efficiency of the setup translates to a much more notable targeted range of approximately 690 miles. Indeed, the Ramcharger does address a significant potential buyer concern: range anxiety.

In a challenging predicament, owners do not have to panic. Of course, charging the plug-in way is possible at up to 145 kilowatts of power. Ram claims this could be useful for approximately 50 miles of additional range in merely ten minutes. It is also worth noting that the Ramcharger allows for bi-directional charging capabilities.

For example, sources indicate that “vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-home bi-directional charging affords the Ram 1500 Ramcharger the flexibility to charge another Stellantis battery-electric vehicle or provide power back to the grid.” The total available power is 7.2 kilowatts. Towing and hauling maximum figures are both better than the gasoline-fueled 1500: up to 14,000 and 2,625 pounds, respectively.

The Pickup Truck’s Style

At first glance, this range-extender trim is evidently part of the Ram family. It boasts unique lighting signatures, however, with the typical take on a full-width light bar on the front fascia, only broken up by the Ram logo on the filled-in grille. There are aero-optimized wheels and horizontal tail light extensions on the tailgate as well. Inside, the Ramcharger benefits from many of the same upgrades as the standard truck. There is a distinct upgrade in the amount of screen real estate, with the 14.5-inch central touchscreen the largest of four.

Ram would not commit to a full trim availability lineup just yet, but the 1500 Ramcharger will arrive before the end of the 2024 model year.
