Ram pickup trucks are designed to work hard for a living. While most of the heavy-duty trucks and vans made by Ram will likely be utilized for commercial applications, some are purchased for personal use. Some extended warranties may or may not be available depending on who owns the vehicle and how it will be used.

Warranty Options

Ram offers two Mopar Vehicle Protection (MVP) plans: Added Care Plus and Maximum Care. The brand also offers the Powertrain Care Plus program, available for non-commercial use on select vehicles. The same applies to the certified pre-owned (CPO) warranty; that is to say, it is only available on select vehicles, and only if they are not owned by a business.

All Ram warranties have a common denominator, however: Buyers need to purchase them before the original three year or 36,000 miles warranty runs out. The sooner customers decide to invest in a warranty, the better, because pricing escalates at 12,000 and 24,000 miles on the odometer. These warranties can also be transferred to new owners for a varying fee, depending on which state the extended warranty was originally purchased.

Mopar Maximum Care

Mopar Maximum Care extends Ram’s original three-year, 36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty and covers over 5,000 parts on the vehicle. It is worth noting that although the plans are comprehensive, not everything is covered under the Ram extended warranty. Some exclusions outlined in Mopar’s service contracts include:

  • Window glass
  • Headlights and other bulbs
  • Catalytic converters
  • Body paint
  • Damage due to collisions
  • Damage from environmental events
  • Neglect by the vehicle owner
  • Damage from improper repairs

There are numerous coverage lengths, levels, and prices for Maximum Care depending on the vehicle, with terms that extend 60, 72, 84, or 96 months out from the in-service date and offer no deductible or $100 or $200 deductible fees. Additionally, the plan incorporates trip interruption coverage of up to $1,000 for meals, lodging, and emergency transportation like a bus, taxi, or airline.

Mopar Added Care Plus

Ram also offers a lower level of protection, the Mopar Added Care Plus plan, covering approximately 850 parts, thereby extending the vehicle’s basic component and powertrain coverage beyond the three-year or 36,000-mile limit. Key parts are covered with this warranty, including the transmission, steering, and engine. Besides component coverage, the plan comes with the following benefits:

  • 24-hour towing/roadside assistance
  • First-day car rental or taxi reimbursement
  • Rental car reimbursement
  • Key fob repair and replacement

Nonetheless, the cost of a Ram extended warranty depends on the vehicle’s model, year, and mileage, as well as the deductible amount and coverage limits the customer selects.

Powertrain Care Plus

Finally, the most basic Powertrain Care Plus plan covers about 350 different parts. That said, readers must keep in mind that this plan is not available for commercial vehicles. In other words, this means drivers cannot acquire it for work vans such as the Ram Chassis Cab or the ProMaster. It is only available for the Ram 1500, 2500, and 3500 pickup trucks, and only if these vehicles are registered to an individual, not a business.

As a concept, automotive warranties seem like a wise choice, but that might not be the case for every driver. The vehicle’s reliability is a crucial factor in determining whether a Ram extended warranty is worth it. To that end, the manufacturer released the following statement: “Ram’s [Vehicle Dependability Study] performance reflects a gain from 11th place among 18 non-premium brands, to eighth. And in the latest Initial Quality Survey, which by our analysis correlates strongly with future dependability improvement, Ram rose 18 positions to a third-place industry finish.”
