Ram’s ProMaster lineup has existed in a vast array of configurations for ages, but it is only now (2024) that the automaker revealed the first available battery-electric vehicle (BEV) for the United States market. That said, the EV initials typically apply to any electric vehicle, but Ram has repurposed it to stand for “electric van” in the case of the 2024 ProMaster EV. The 2024 Ram ProMaster EV arrives to take on the Mercedes-Benz eSprinter and the Ford e-Transit, two fully electric commercial vans that can cover quite a few miles on a single charge and carry heavy payloads. Their advantages, however, come at higher price points than Ram’s offering. For example, sources expect the 2024 Ram ProMaster electric van to start at approximately $50,000 MSRP (Plus destination fee) for the chassis cab. The panel van variant is likely to begin at around $52,000 MSRP (Plus destination fee).

The arc of electrified Ram products is bending toward the familiar, especially since the ProMaster electric van is designed to look identical to its gasoline-fed siblings. What matters more than anything else is operating costs, and electric vans have the potential to drastically lower a fleet’s overhead. To that end, the ProMaster electric van offers up a tactfully useful driving range at city speeds, claimed to be up to 162 miles on a full charge. That annihilates the competitive Ford e-Transit vehicle’s 126-mile maximum.

Propelling the ProMaster EV

A 110-kilowatt-hour battery embedded in the floor powers the ProMaster electric van and can be charged via a wall charger or on DC fast chargers with respectably high currents. It is worth noting that numerous consumers are not searching for exceptionally quick charging rates, as these electric vans tend to run specific, planned-in-advance routes on a daily basis before charging during downtime and overnight. That said, the manufacturer incorporates a charging locator complete with trip planning software into the vehicle’s 10.1-inch UConnect 5 infotainment system to help drivers pinpoint chargers along their routes if need be.

Power comes from a front-mounted electric motor spinning the front tires, generating 268 horsepower and producing 302 pound-feet of torque. Two body styles are available, both utilizing the same 159-inch wheelbase and a high roof. There is also a choice of cargo length, either 12 or 13 feet. Additionally, an “extended super-high-roof” body is available, with an 86-inch tall cargo area. For reference, that is 4.5 inches more than the tallest Ford e-Transit. The ProMaster EV maintains the standard gasoline-powered ProMaster van’s 524 cubic feet of cargo volume and its flat rear floor for convenient loading and unloading. Meanwhile, it hauls a maximum payload of 3,020 pounds in the cargo configuration, better than the Mercedes-Benz rival.

Safety Features

The 2024 Ram ProMaster electric van is generously outfitted with safety features. Full-speed forward collision warning, front and rear park sense, drowsiness detection, auto high-beams, post-collision braking, crosswind assist, and traffic sign information are standard. There are even more options to tick on the list. Buyers can also have lane keep assist, front parking sensors, intelligent speed assist, adaptive cruise control, and the Secure Park feature, preventing drivers from shifting out of park without the key. On the menu, there is also Active Driving Assist with Level 2 automated driving capability and a 360-degree surround-view camera with a bird’s eye view.
