The Kia Corp has had an interesting design philosophy for its vehicles over the years. Called “Opposites United”, the design philosophy is all about mixing naturally occurring shapes or elements with man-made products. Most recently, the Kia EV3 and EV4 concepts are great examples of this, with the EV3 representing “Air”, and the EV4 representing “Earth”. Both the EV3 and EV4 are made of sustainable materials to circle back to that nature aspect. The Car Design Award has recently recognized this, and presented Kia with the prestigious accolade for “Brand Design Language” during the 2024 Car Design Award ceremony.

With a long history in the industry, the Car Design Award has been around since the 1980s, and has since become a global name for recognizing the design teams responsible for the best concept cars, production vehicles, and overall design language of vehicles available in the market today. To keep award ceremonies like this diverse, the Car Design Award jury is comprised of journalists from internationally renowned automotive and design magazines. When it comes to the entrant, only 10 production cars and 10 concept car projects from the past year may be chosen as finalists, plus five brands elected for the best design language. During this year’s Milan Design Week, Kia was announced as the winner during a ceremony at the ADI Design Museum in Milan.

“With its ‘Opposites United’ philosophy, Kia design has taken a non-conformist approach with the aim of inducing change, unafraid of taking risks. Unexpected at first sight, Kia’s new models break the mold with long-established aesthetic parameters to introduce a totally new and modern formal language. A relentless innovation to establish a new identity,” – Car Design Award 2024 jury

So, how does this philosophy work? As we mentioned, the Kia EV3 and EV4 concepts are recent examples. Take the element of “Air”, for instance. The element of the EV3, air is expressed with the use of light and transparency throughout the cabin. There haven’t been many details for the EV3 yet, but this would suggest that the EV3 will come with panoramic sunroofs to provide the driver and passengers with an obscured view of the world. More details for the EV4 have been released, and when it comes to the element “Earth”, the design team used natural dyes made of madder roots and walnut shells to 100-percent recycled cotton, and hemp fibers to create the console. Talk about getting down to Earth.

Part of the sustainability aspect of Kia, the first vehicle to be produced with sustainable materials was the Kia EV9 all-electric SUV. From bioplastic to Bio paint and recycled Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) carpets, fabrics, and felt, the Kia EV9 changed how BEVs are made. Basically, the Kia EV9 took everything good about the EV6 and improved on it. This sustainable pattern continued for the EV3 and EV4 concepts. We’re not sure when these concepts will get the green light for release, but we also have the Kia EV5 and Kia EV8 to look forward to.
