HMG wins Three Accolades During the 2024 Red Dot Design Awards
Technology moves so fast these days, they say the moment you walk out of a store with a laptop, it’s already obsolete. Well, we hope that’s not the case, because some of us love our laptops and use them for remote work. So many industries are making use of more and more advanced technology, like artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics, and they’re starting to find their way into the auto industry. Automakers are looking for more and more ways to make their vehicles smarter, basically turning them into computers. The best way to do that is to learn how to develop mobile computers – basically, robots. The Hyundai Motor Group (HMG) and Kia have been working on technology like this for many years, and recently, the Hyundai Motor Group’s (the Group) Robotics LAB has been recognized with three prestigious accolades from the 2024 Red Dot Design Awards.
“These awards are the result of Hyundai Motor Group’s continuous efforts to ensure that customers and innovative robotics technologies can meet naturally…We will continue to make efforts as a friendly guide to the robot intelligence society, alongside devotion to take the lead in turning imagination into reality.” – Dong Jin Hyun, Vice President and Head of Robotics LAB at Hyundai Motor and Kia
HMG has been very busy with robotics and even introduced the first Smart Building in Seoul, South Korea. Employing three different robots – a parking robot, a Smart Parking Control System and Automatic Charging Robot (ACR), and the DAL-e Delivery Robot – many day-to-day tasks are handled by robots. The automatic charging robot was revealed back in 2023 and makes charging up battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrids easier than ever. With the Remote Smart Parking Assist (RSPA) popping up in HMG and Kia vehicles, the vehicle backs up to the Automatic Charging Robot, and the robot will recognize the charging port, start charging, and then detach once charging is complete. The consumer can also open and close their charging port wirelessly with their mobile phone.
As for the robotics that won awards, the Group’s innovative Safety Inspection Robot was named “Best of Best” by Red Dot Design. Able to utilize artificial intelligence to inspect machinery within the Hyundai Motor Group Innovation Center Singapore (HMGICS) by navigating around obstacles on the HMGICS’ production center floor. It can inspect gauges, valves, and components in awkward locations, correct false readings, and report on any missed contaminants or spillages to increase safety and productivity.
Another Best of Best winner is the Group’s MobED Delivery robot that utilizes a DnL (Drive and Lift) module for driving, steering, and braking for seamless movement and safe delivery of goods while ensuring secure transportation to destinations in a diverse range of environments, including offices and apartments. The aforementioned delivery robot is not to be confused for the Robotics LAB’s DAL-e Delivery robot, also recognized as a Red Dot Winner. This delivery robot is used for delivering food, beverage, and parcels to consumers in more complex spaces, such as offices and shopping malls.
Either way, it’s pretty cool to see all the smart robots HMG is developing. Maybe one day, our cars will be more robotic than automobiles. Just don’t expect any auto bots any time soon.
