A Look at the Horsepower of Kia BEVs
The Kia Corp just announced its newest battery-electric vehicle to get a global reveal, and it’s the very attractive Kia EV3. A compact SUV that packs quite the punch, the EV3 joins a growing line of Kia BEVs and concepts being added to the lineup. On the one hand, we’re kinda bummed it’s yet another SUV in this already oversaturated market of large cars. On the other hand, it’s a great example of what a smaller BEV can do. Just look at these numbers for the current Kia BEV lineup.
Kia EV6
The first all-electric vehicle to be produced by Kia that had no gasoline predecessor, the EV6 is a true icon of the brand. Powered by a Permanent Magnet AC Synchronous system, the standard Kia EV6 Light trim can generate 167 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, whereas the GT AWD can generate a total of 576 horsepower and 545 lb-ft of torque. With this kind of power, it’s odd how quickly the EV6 lost the limelight to the EV9, said to be the new flagship of the automaker.
Kia EV9
The larger of the two, one could say the EV9 was based on the Kia Telluride SUV, even if it’s unofficial. They basically look like twins. Even so, the EV9 doesn’t pack the same kind of punch, with a high of 379 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque on the GT-Line trim. Oddly enough, the horsepower is shared with three trim levels, including the Wind and Land trims.
EV5
It took almost two years, but we finally heard about another BEV concept from Kia during the 2023 Chinese EV Day. The EV9 was already doing rounds in Europe before landing in the U.S. in August 2023. Earlier that year, in March, Kia revealed the EV5, and in November 2023, released some of its specs. There was nothing about its horsepower output, though. Instead, we got an all-electric range (AER) estimate of 404 miles – much larger than the 310 miles of the EV6. Not much else has been reported about it since.
EV8
Yeah, it feels like we’re all over the place now. No word on the Kia EV7 just yet, but the EV8 is what we’re really excited about. Said to be the replacement for the Kia Stinger, the first sports car by Kia in a long time, the Stinger burned bright but died out quickly. The Kia K5 is the new sports car on the block, but might not be for long. If Kia can bring sports car performance to a BEV, then the EV8 is our best hope, with an estimated output of 603 horsepower. That would make it the most powerful Kia model in the entire lineup. Uh, yes please!
EV4
We got a tiny, tiny look at the EV4 in 2023 more or less coupled with the release of the EV3. The EV4 showed up at the Kia’s EV Day event in Seoul, and was another possible replacement for the Stinger before the EV8 came to light. Sharing similarities with the EV6, it’s between a full-size car and midsize SUV in terms of length. No numbers for this one, though.
EV3
The newest addition to the ranks of Kia BEVs is the Kia EV3. A revolution in the lineup, the Kia EV3 is the first model to show the capabilities of personalizing a consumer’s EV3 interior with themes and apps available for download from the Kia Connect App Store. Powered by an 81.4 kwH battery (for the long-range model), horsepower wasn’t mentioned, but an AER of 350 miles was reported. The EV3 has a lot more going for it, however, offering V2L capability to power appliances inside and outside of the vehicle, and a full lounge mode with a relaxation chair that leans back and video streaming to kill some time when recharging (80 percent in 31 minutes).
