The Current-Generation Grand Cherokee Takes One Last Bow
Although rumors strongly suggested the debut of the next-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee would happen sometime this year (2020), it appears that the ongoing pandemic threw a wrench in those plans. The current-generation Grand Cherokee is destined to soldier on for another model year as Jeep puts the finishing touches on its successor. Mopar Insiders reports that Jeep is planning a gracious send-off for the SUV with a one-of-a-kind 80th Anniversary Edition trim. If this is true, it would be on par with a previous trend Jeep established back in 2016 to celebrate the brand’s 75th anniversary with the Grand Cherokee 75th Anniversary Edition trim.
If Mopar Insiders is correct, Jeep will build the 80th Anniversary Edition on the Limited trim as its base. For the time being, there are no specifics from the automaker on what a package of this quality would include. Upgrades such as a unique front fascia, low gloss bronze accents, exclusive badging, seats, a unique grille and many other upgrades were some of the ones offered on the brand’s previous 75th Anniversary Edition just five years ago. Jeep will likely repeat a variation of that for the brand’s upcoming anniversary, but enthusiasts shouldn’t set wild expectations such as a performance boost etc.
The rumored anniversary edition trim will join the Jeep Grand Cherokee’s other high-tier trims such as the Trailhawk, Summit, Overland, along with the rest of the model’s lineup. Additional minor tweaks are also lined up for the next model year SUV. The Limited and Limited X trims will include a new Sun & Sound package that features a nine-speaker Alpine audio system and a dual-pane panoramic sunroof, while the entry-level Laredo trim will now ride on new 18-inch wheels.
By the time the next-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee model debuts, it’s rumored to ride on a similar architecture that currently underpins the Alfa Romeo Stelvio and Giulia models. In addition, the next-generation Grand Cherokee is also rumored to be making a significant change with two- and three-row interior layouts, allowing it to compete directly against other large SUVs such as the Ford Explorer for example. Powertrain details are limited for the time being, but customers can expect some form of light hybridization, likely from the existing eTorque mild hybrid system. The next-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee was expected to make its big debut at the Detroit Auto Show, but that was scrapped with no rescheduled date in sight.
