Look Forward With the Jeep Gladiator Off-Road Camera

Designed to tackle any obstacle, the 2020 Jeep Gladiator is ready to combat any large rock, log, or unforeseen dropoff that may stand in its path while off-roading. How does the Gladiator accomplish such a feat? Well, as it turns out Jeep designed an innovative forward-facing camera feature so that drivers can see any possible obstacles over the hood. The camera is housed in the middle slot of the Gladiator’s classic seven-slot grille. Drivers will be able to activate the front-facing camera feature by pushing a button on the Uconnect Off-road pages with the image transmitted right on the touchscreen display.

“The inspiration for the forward-facing camera was our customer, the Jeep enthusiast. We wanted to provide another innovative tool for the Jeep enthusiast to use and have a great time while they are off-roading,” said Pete Milosavlevski, the Gladiator chief engineer. Milosavlevski states that the idea for the forward-facing camera came from feedback generated while riding with customers during off-road adventures.

We should note that the camera is exclusive to the Rubicon trim, the same trim that offers over 80 advanced safety and security features on the Gladiator. Once the camera is activated, it can detect obstacles as close as two feet in front of the bumper and as far as 10 feet in front of the Gladiator. The camera doesn’t only show a preview of what’s ahead, it also offers drivers dynamic guidelines to help them better navigate around obstacles.

The little camera also offers another intricate detail. Designers knew that as an off-road camera it was definitely bound to get dusty, so to combat that they installed a tiny camera washer. When drivers cannot see and do not want to exit their pickups, they’re free to activate the stream from their touchscreen display.

Other special features of the Gladiator include a Dana 44 front and rear axle that gives the Gladiator the ability to tear through all manner of rough terrain. Such a heavy-duty axle gives the Gladiator impressive front-wheel articulation. Additionally, the Uconnect infotainment system is widely considered to be a best-in-class system with its Apple CarPlay and Google Android capability, as well as USB-C ports, advanced features for satellite radio. Those Gladiator pickups equipped with navigation will also record any path taken during an off-road excursion so Jeepers can easily find it again in the future.

For the time being the Gladiator only offers one powertrain, but a 3.0-liter EcoDiesel is expected to become available in the near future. Slated to dump out 442 lb-ft of torque while paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission, this is a Gladiator trim worth waiting for. The Jeep Gladiator is already touted as the midsize truck with a best-in-class tow rating, a capability of up to 7,650 pounds to be exact. Towing ratings aren’t expected to change with the diesel powertrain, but the extra torque will be the perfect boost to make the Gladiator even more of a beast off-road.
