Jeep Cherokee Gets a Few Worthy Updates for 2019
Touted as one of the more capable SUVs in its segment, the Jeep Cherokee features impressive towing and off-roading capabilities. Off-road enthusiasts agree that when the 2019 Jeep Cherokee is properly equipped it certainly delivers superior off-road prowess when compared to counterparts in the same segment. It’s important to note that the Cherokee received a bit of criticism these past few years due to its controversial (and nearly slanted) front end styling and its questionable nine-speed automatic transmission according to buyers. Jeep chose to address these issues – and a few others that weren’t as immediate – for the 2019 model year. The 2019 Jeep Cherokee now features a redesigned front end that gives it a more authentic and premium Jeep look like the Grand Cherokee.
As we mentioned prior, the design is not the only improvement. The nine-speed automatic transmission has been improved as well, but the big surprise for 2019 is the all-new available turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The infotainment system also saw some upgrades with new capabilities. Assembled at the Belvidere Plant in Illinois, the 2019 Jeep Cherokee comes in five different trim levels – Latitude, Latitude Plus, Limited, the high-tier Overland and the off-road-oriented and Trail Rated Trailhawk. Base trims feature a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine under the hood that’s capable of generating 180 horsepower and 171 lb-ft of torque. An optional upgrade for these same base trims is a 3.2-liter V6 engine that delivers 271 horsepower and 239 lb-ft of torque – a perfect option for those who want more from their Cherokee. The new turbocharged 2.0-liter engine is optional on all trims except the base Latitude and is capable of 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque.
All engines are mated to the improved nine-speed automatic transmission whose software is now improved to reflect refined drivability and to ensure that the vehicle is always in the correct gear. Off-road enthusiasts will be ecstatic to experience how the Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk behaves both on- and off-road as it features specific off-road hardware and the Cherokee’s best four-wheel-drive system. All other trims are available in either front-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive. Said base four-wheel-drive system is called Active Drive I and features a single-speed automatic Power Transfer Unit that’s directly responsible for sending additional torque to the rear wheels on a need-basis.
Another available 4×4 system is the Active Drive II system that’s available on all trims except the Latitude and it features a two-speed Power Transfer Unit complete with a low range for those who take off-roading seriously and a neutral switch that allows owners to flat-tow the Cherokee behind a motorhome. As the most serious off-roader of the bunch, the Cherokee Trailhawk also features Active Drive Lock that includes a rear locking differential for improved off-road traction. The Cherokee Trailhawk also offers all-terrain tires, higher ground clearance, Selec-Speed Control, protective skid plates, Hill-Ascent Control, and other specific Trailhawk exterior and interior trim.
All Cherokee models equipped with four-wheel-drive also feature the Selec-Terrain system that includes a rotary switch for drivers to switch between settings such as Auto, Sport, Snow, Sand and Mud. The interior of the 2019 Cherokee also received an update for 2019 that gives it a fresh and elegant look as well as a larger cargo area and a hands-free power liftgate. Advanced safety features and driver assistance technologies such as automatic emergency braking, park assist, and forward collision warning are all available only on the high-tier trims, not on the Latitude and Latitude Plus trims.
