Comparison: Journey or Durango and GMC Acadia
Comparing vehicles made for a lot of passengers is never easy. Drivers want comfortable interiors, up-to-date technology, great fuel economy and safety, and why shouldn’t they? Those are the standards for vehicles today, and if one were to scrimp on either, well, it wouldn’t make the “Yes” pile when it comes to making a buying decision.
That’s why we take a hard look at vehicles when drawing up a comparison, from the engine specs to the safety and convenience features. Today, we’re taking a look at two 7-passenger seating mid-size SUVs/CUVs: the Dodge Journey and the GMC Acadia.
2016 Dodge Journey SE
Here’s how you sum up the Dodge Journey – “value and versatility.” The cost of a Journey is more affordable than it’s competitors and it still has some nice features for the price. The higher trims levels do come with more gadgets, but many drivers will like this car for its 7-passenger accommodations while on a budget.

The GMC Acadia definitely separates itself from other mid-size SUVs with a slightly smaller, lighter package and a sleeker look. Even with its 3-row seating for up to seven passengers, it still packs many new assist systems into the interior. It’s slick, it’s smooth, and it’s sophisticated. Plus, a new off-road all-terrain variation is available for those looking to drive on the wild side with a small party of people in the back.
Performance
The 2016 Dodge Journey SE model comes standard with a 2.4-liter I4 DOHC 16-valve with dual VVT engine. (VVT stands for variable valve timing.) DOHC means the engine is optimized for power and fuel efficiency with dual overhead camshafts, and the dual VVT complements that. The 4-speed automatic transmission is standard and comes with AutoStick technology, a transaxle shifter that provides the driver with clutchless manual shifting. The engine generates up to 173-horsepower with 166 lb-ft of torque. This provides the Journey with a fuel economy of 19 MPG in the city and 26 MPG on the highway.
The 2017 GMC Acadia SLE-1 is powered by a 2.5L DOHC 4-cylinder SIDI engine with VVT, much like the Dodge. The SIDI is the main difference, which helps to increase performance while reducing fuel consumption. As they say, the proof is in the pudding, with a fuel economy of 21/25 MPG city/highway. The SLE-1 comes standard with 6-speed automatic transmission. The engine generates up to 193-horsepower and 188 lb-ft of torque.
