The Comeback of the Chevy Bolt: A New Era of Affordable EVs

September 11th, 2023 by

In 2017, the Chevrolet Bolt entered the electric vehicle arena and transformed the landscape with its remarkable features. It seamlessly combined a compact exterior with an impressive 259-mile range, all offered at an accessible price point. This made it a beloved choice among electric vehicle enthusiasts, quickly establishing itself as one of the best-selling electric cars in the United States.

However, earlier this year, concerns arose when General Motors announced the discontinuation of the Bolt, leaving EV fans pondering the future of affordable electric mobility.

Fortunately, Chevrolet is making a triumphant return with an all-new Bolt EV. During a quarterly earnings call in July, GM’s CEO, Mary Barra, shared exciting news about the next-generation Bolt, assuring us that it will retain the outstanding range, cutting-edge technology, and exceptional affordability cherished in the original model. The upcoming Bolt EV will leverage GM’s advanced Ultium technology, which has already proved its mettle in models like the Cadillac Lyriq and Chevy Blazer EV.

This innovative technology incorporates U.S.-made fast-charging batteries, efficient vehicle platforms, and intelligent packaging, ensuring a swift reintroduction to the market without starting from scratch. While specific details and release dates remain undisclosed, it’s anticipated that the new Bolt will share styling cues and technology with Chevrolet’s expanding EV lineup, featuring models such as the Silverado EV, Blazer EV, and Equinox EV.

The Chevy Bolt is Making a Comeback

Reports indicate that the vehicle is set to make a triumphant return in the next year or two. After all, it was a long-standing favorite among Chevy drivers and represented a more eco-friendly option when it first debuted in 2016. The Bolt’s initial price tag of $26,500 (plus destination fee) in 2016/2017 made it the most affordable EV on the market, pioneering a new category of electric vehicles. It offered a sleek and fun driving experience without the hefty price tag of $50,000+ that many other electric models commanded at the time.

Surprisingly, despite its discontinuation announcement in 2023 – which followed a significant recall in 2021 due to battery fire risks – the Bolt continued to be one of Chevy’s best-selling vehicles, with news outlets reporting its incredible sales performance.

The All-New Chevy Bolt Comes with Exciting Upgrades

In addition to the news of the Bolt’s return to production lines in 2024/2025, there are confirmed details about interior specifications, particularly the battery. According to reports, Chevy plans to expedite the new Bolt’s release by updating the vehicle with Ultium and Ultifi technologies, which translates to improved battery range and faster charging times for new Bolt owners.

Chevrolet has been investing heavily in battery development for its EV lineup, and the all-new Bolt is set to benefit from this investment. Furthermore, GM announced a substantial increase in its EV and AV investments from 2020 through 2025 to $35 billion, signaling a significant commitment to advancing electric vehicle technology. This should lead to enhancements in design, battery safety, and overall performance for the Bolt.

GM’s Ultium Battery Powers the 2024/2025 Chevy Bolt

These Ultium EV platforms are designed to work across GM’s family of brands, including Chevrolet. Ultium has received positive feedback and is already featured in various models, such as the Chevrolet Equinox, Chevrolet Blazer EV, Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV, Cadillac Escalade IQ, and Buick Electra E5 SUV. This is a tried-and-tested technology that Chevrolet is banking on for its latest Bolt series.

An added bonus of using Ultium EV platforms is their quiet operation, with many drivers praising the serene interior cabin experience during driving. Chevy has been experiencing record-breaking electric car sales and production, with the all-new Equinox leading the way. If the Bolt can return with slight design updates, a safer battery, and a more affordable price tag, this could indeed be a groundbreaking year for GM and Chevrolet. After all, substantial investments in electric platform technology should lead to significant sales, justifying the cost.
