The 2024 Chevy Traverse: Driving Innovation with Fewer Gears

October 9th, 2023 by

In July, the 2024 Chevy Traverse was officially unveiled, marking the introduction of an entirely new third generation that brings with it a fresh exterior design, a redefined trim level range, an extensively renovated cabin, a suite of new technological features, and an upgraded powertrain. Notably, the 2024 Chevy Traverse now comes standard with the GM eight-speed automatic transmission, diverging from the GM nine-speed automatic transmission featured in the previous generation. Our insights reveal the rationale behind this deliberate transition as part of the recent generation overhaul.

Conventionally, every new automotive generation builds upon its predecessor, delivering a heightened array of features, increased power, and, often, an augmented number of gears. However, the 2024 Chevy Traverse deviates from this norm, as the third generation embraces the GM eight-speed automatic gearbox, in contrast to the GM nine-speed automatic gearbox employed in the 2023 Chevy Traverse.

In an effort to elucidate the decision to reduce a gear in the 2024 Chevy Traverse compared to the 2023 model year, car reviewers engaged in a discussion with Traverse product planners, led by GM Authority Executive Editor Alex Luft. According to these experts, the GM eight-speed automatic transmission integrated into the 2024 Chevy Traverse can be viewed as an evolution of the nine-speed 9TXX, albeit with one gear less, a distinction the planners refer to as “a variant.”

This decision was primarily motivated by introducing the turbocharged 2.5L I4 LK0 gasoline engine in the 2024 Chevy Traverse. This new powerplant generates a significantly higher level of torque when compared to the naturally aspirated 3.6L V6 LFY gasoline engine that was featured in the previous-generation Traverse.

According to insights from engineers as shared with GM Authority, the decision to match the standard turbocharged 2.5L I4 LK0 gasoline engine with the GM eight-speed automatic transmission in the 2024 Chevy Traverse was made with a precise focus on enhancing the overall performance of this particular powertrain. The eight-speed transmission aligns seamlessly with the new engine, resulting in improved fuel efficiency and heightened torque, underlining the precision and intent behind GM’s choice to reduce a gear in the all-new 2024 Chevy Traverse.

As a noteworthy reminder, the production of the 2024 Chevy Traverse is scheduled to commence in December at the GM Lansing Delta Township plant in Michigan, where it will be based on the long-wheelbase variant of the GM C1 platform, offering a solid foundation for this exciting new generation of the Traverse.

Technologies To Look Forward To In The 2024 Traverse

Safety Alert Seat

General Motors excels in this domain with a specialized Safety Alert Seat, equipped with small motors that deliver strategic vibrations. The left motor activates when a hazard emerges on the left side, while the right motor fulfills a corresponding role. If the threat is directly ahead, both motors engage, sparing the driver the need to divert their attention to dashboard alerts. Notably, this feature is a standard inclusion in the new Traverse.

Expansive Infotainment Display

Chevrolet takes a leap forward with a 17.7-inch infotainment screen featured as standard in the new Traverse, rendering the 9-inch display in the Honda Pilot appear somewhat dated by comparison.

Super Cruise Technology

Originally introduced in Cadillacs, the hands-free driving innovation of Super Cruise is gradually making its way into Chevrolet vehicles. This optional advancement seamlessly combines adaptive cruise control and steering assistance, granting drivers the freedom to keep their hands off the wheel and their feet off the pedals — all within the confines of select roads (extensive mileage data is already stored within the system, with continual updates in progress) and facilitates lane changes. Particularly noteworthy is its compatibility with trailers, although drivers must maintain visual engagement, as the system disengages otherwise.
