Engine Options

The 2018 Ram 2500 comes with three engine options. The Tradesman, SLT, and Big Horn are equipped with a 5.7-liter HEMI V8 Variable Valve Timing (VVT) gasoline engine. The 5.7L engine is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission that produces 383 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque. Also, the 5.7L V8 engine allows for a maximum towing capacity of 13,520 pounds.

The Ram 2500 Limited, Laramie Longhorn, Power Wagon, Limited, and Limited Tungsten trims are standard equipped with a 6.4-liter HEMI V8 engine with a six-speed automatic transmission. This powertrain can produce 410 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque and allows for a maximum towing capacity of 15,470 pounds.

The 6.7-liter Cummins Turbo Diesel engine is ideal for consumers looking to upgrade their engine for additional torque and towing capabilities. The 6.7L Turbo Diesel engine produces an impressive 660 lb-ft of torque which automatically increases the Ram 1500’s towing capacity to 17,980 pounds.

Additional Options

A truck’s axle ratio and drivetrain can make a significant difference on its towing capacity, so it’s important for a buyer to know what features are most important to them. Higher axle ratios increase towing capacity, but it decreases fuel economy. A 4×4 drivetrain distributes power to all four wheels, which can be a great benefit when towing, but the equipment needed to make a truck a 4×4 vehicle adds weight, and therefore takes away from the amount of weight a truck can tow. To give buyers options, the Ram 2500 is available with a 3.42, 3.73 or a 4.10 axle ratio and a 4×2 or 4×4 drivetrain, except the Ram 2500 Power Wagon is only available with a 4×4 drivetrain.

Trims + Cab Sizes

The 2018 Ram 2500, as previously mentioned, is available in eight trim levels – Tradesman, SLT, Big Horn (Lone Star for consumers in Texas), Laramie, Laramie Longhorn, Power Wagon, Limited and Limited Tungsten Edition. The base Tradesman trim is built for commercial purposes, while the Limited Tungsten Edition was designed for those looking for ultimate luxury in a pickup truck.

There are three cab styles available – a two-door regular cab, a four-door crew cab, and a four-door mega cab. The regular cab is only available with an 8’ truck bed, and the crew cab and mega cab models are available with a 6’4” or 8’ truck bed. The Tradesman and SLT trims are available with all three cab styles, while the Big Horn/Lone Star, Laramie Longhorn and Limited trims are available with a crew cab or mega cab. The Ram 2500 Power Wagon, a trim designed specifically for off-roading, is available only with a short truck bed and the crew cab.
