2016 Kia Rio – Miami, Fl
The 2016 Kia Rio in Miami, FL is a sub-compact sedan that provides performance without compromise. Not only is the Gasoline Direct Injected engine powerful and fuel-efficient, but the design of the Rio is meant to be practical and geared towards aerodynamics — and it looks good doing it. The inside is another surprise, and makes you feel like you are sitting in something much more upscale than a $14,165 sub-compact car. What do all of these aspects have in common?
They all add up to make an underrated and underestimated car worth far more than what it’s being sold for, and a car that deserves to be at the forefront of the sub-compact car market.

Design
Not only is the design of the 2016 Kia Rio aerodynamic, but it’s also quite stylish. One reason it’s considered to be such a good looking vehicle — especially when compared to other sub-compact cars — is because Kia ensured that the design would allow the Rio to avoid the awkward dimensions that plague numerous competitors. Focusing on this aspect allowed Kia to produce a sub-compact car that looks like they took an average sedan and proportionally shrunk it down a couple of sizes.
A Couple of Upgrades
Obviously, it wasn’t enough for the Rio to already be one of the most handsome vehicles in the segment, so Kia made sure to give the design a couple of upgrades for 2016. While both of them are subtle, the most noticeable out of the two is easily the restyled grille. This restyled front grille comes with a new pair of taillights in the back as well, which are slightly leaner than before.
Aerodynamic
The main focus of the design is still practicality and aerodynamics. You can see that in the shape, the low and chiseled hood, which rests above a forward-sloping front fascia. The windshield is sitting at the same grade as the hood, and melds seamlessly onto the similarly low-cut roofline. On the sides, there are two indents that help channel the wind off the side of the car, and there is very little space between the tires and body in order to help prevent drag. The back sits slightly higher than the front — which not only provides an athletic stance — but also decreases the space between the back window and the top of the trunk. The result is less surface area for the wind to hit as it comes off the back of the roof, in turn reducing the drag in the back.
A spoiler helps send the wind on its way, successfully rounding off the aerodynamic design.
Fuel-Efficiency
Don’t believe the design is effective? The EPA-estimated fuel economy rating of 27 mpg city and 37 mpg says otherwise. While that is in part due to the size of the engine, the two main factors that work against a car’s fuel economy are weight and wind drag. Since the 2016 Kia Rio is a lighter sub-compact vehicle with an exceptionally aerodynamic design, it’s able to negate both of those complications.
Engine
Since those are taken care of, the fuel-efficiency is now left in the hands of the engine, which is a 1.6-liter four-cylinder that produces 138 horsepower and 123 lb-ft of torque. While that might seem like a small engine, anything larger or heavier placed under the hood would cause the Rio to lose out on fuel-efficiency. It comes naturally paired to a six-speed manual transmission, but a six-speed automatic comes optional for those who don’t feel like driving a stick.
On the Rio EX trim, an automatic stop-start system is paired to the engine. This system shuts the engine down when the car comes to a stop, and then it restarts it when the brake pedal is released. With this on board, the Rio gains 1 mpg city (now at 28 mpg), but highway fuel economy remains the same.
Interior
The sculpted exterior might be eye-catching, but it’s even more stunning on the inside. As far as sub-compact cars go, the interior is surprisingly roomy. Taller drivers will be comfortable in the front or back, thanks to the Rio’s surprisingly above-average passenger space. Along with the above-average passenger space, the Rio also sports a generous amount of trunk space — 13.7 cubic feet. This space can also be expanded thanks to the rear seats’ 60/40-split folding structure.
And while the base level has run-of-the-mill materials, the higher-level trims are classed up with some higher-quality materials. Now, a soft-touch dash is available, along with improved seat materials and metal-paint trim.
Technology
Apart from having the upgraded materials, there is also an abundance of amenities. Kia’s UVO eServices infotainment system can be paired to a seven-inch color touch screen display on the SX trim. This touch-screen display is home to many great programs, like HD Radio, SiriusXM Traffic, and Voice-Command Navigation. Bluetooth wireless technology with steering wheel mounted control buttons is even an option, so you can operate your phone through the UVO eServices system. The Rio even comes with push-button start on the highest trim level.
While some of these features are optional, it’s just as easy to grab the higher trim level. After all, the SX trim comes in at just over $20,000, which is still less than your average costing sedan. But for that price, you are able to get upscale comfort, and advanced convenience and entertainment technology features.
