The 2024 Ram Dakota is making a comeback. Just like the Dodge Dakota of yore, this all-new vehicle will be a midsize pickup truck. It will be ideally suited for drivers who want to spend less than they would on a full-size trim but still enjoy all the advantages of a truck. Rumors about the all-new Rampage have picked up the pace recently, with more prototypes sighted in the United States in the 2023 model year.

Now though, it looks like the Dakota is set to enter the fray as well. It will act as a smaller sibling to the Ram 1500, the current king of the hill in the Ram range. The 2024 Ram Dakota will provide something more polished and sportier to appeal to a younger audience. With the midsize pickup truck segment upping the ante and with the Chevrolet Colorado, Ford Ranger, and Toyota Tacoma all arriving in the United States, it appears that Stellantis and Ram Trucks have decided to join the gathering as well.

The Historical Relevance of the Dakota Nameplate

The Dakota nameplate is nothing new to the world of midsize pickup trucks. Dodge introduced the Dakota back in 1986, with it marketed as the Ram Dakota for the final two years of production up to 2011. This change occurred just before Ram became its own brand. It should be noted that the editors from hotcars.com claim, “The Dakota at its peak was so good that it was nominated for the North American Truck of the Year award. Those kinds of standards are what the 2024 model should be aiming for.” The question now becomes: Why is Ram taking such a vested interest in retooling the Dakota?

Ram and Stellantis have noticed how profitable the midsize pickup segment has become. After all, Ford has recently taken the wraps off its new Ranger, and Toyota has revealed the long-awaited Tacoma as well. The enthusiasm surrounding the segment and the sheer number of trucks in it has not gone unnoticed by Ram.

Declarations from Ram

Ram has announced that it will adopt many of the underpinnings of the Ram 1500, with new styling that will permit it to appeal to a younger audience. Ornate aesthetics will adorn the new truck but with some similarities to the 1500. For example, buyers may still be able to relish plenty of comfort features, such as heated and ventilated front seats, leather-trimmed seats, and a wireless smartphone charging pad.

Hotcars.com adds: “The Ram Dakota should ideally use the multi-link system found in the Ram 1500 to improve its ride quality. The 1500 is one of the best riding and handling trucks in its class, which means it is a lesson its younger sibling can learn.” This is a crucial deviation from other midsize pickups, with the Ford Ranger and Chevrolet Colorado utilizing leaf springs. Moreover, since drivers these days prefer to pair decent fuel economy with roguish capabilities, the Dakota may also provide the diesel 3.0-liter V-6 engine. With 260 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque, it would represent a significant way to maximize towing capabilities without forcing drivers to pay too much at the pump.

Copious Trim Levels

Drivers can expect various trim levels as well for the new Dakota. A sophisticated interior is expected, but an off-road variant should be part of the range, along with more conventional forms for the truck. There should be several packages for customers to choose from, ranging from the Tradesman to a Rebel package and potentially even a Dakota TRX. If the brand does this, Ram will ensure that the new Dakota is in line with other midsize pickup trucks.
