Hemi. Hemi. Hemi. Not even Dorothy’s clicking heels from The Wizard of Oz can return the supercharged V-8 engine to Ram’s 2025 lineup. The renowned Hemi V-8 powertrain has been connected with Ram power for approximately 21 years, but it’s slated to be substituted by the latest generation of Ram Trucks’ juggernaut engine – the 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged “Hurricane” straight-six. Of note, Ram enthusiasts are undoubtedly no strangers to the build method employed on the all-new RHO trim.

Although the brand is cautious about customers making comparisons between this pickup and the now-discontinued TRX, it doesn’t take much to spot the family resemblance. That’s because the RHO has largely benefited from the TRX’s advanced technology, though that vehicle’s prestigious 6.2-liter V-8 is conspicuously missing. For the manufacturer, it’s a move that makes sense and is simple to justify, but will customers accept it?

Wary consumers should consider the following scenario:

Rolling into the throttle to merge with fast-moving interstate traffic and feeling an unexpected rush in power and swift acceleration. The feel of being pushed deeper into the leather bucket seat isn’t something many drivers associate with a full-size Ram four-wheel-drive pickup with a Hemi mill under the hood, let alone one propelled by an I-6. That’s correct, an inline-six engine that produces greater robustness than the distinguished Hemi.

While it delivers more power, there are questions remaining about the straight-six power plant. The EPA recently addressed the most relevant question, publishing fuel economy figures for the 2025 Ram.

How Many Miles Per Gallon Does a 2025 Ram 3.0L Hurricane Engine Get?

The entry-level mild-hybrid 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 powertrain carries over into the new frame. In 2024, this engine traversed 26 miles per gallon (mpg) on the highway, 20 miles per gallon in the city, and 23 miles per gallon combined. The EPA predicts the same numbers for the carryover 2025 Pentastar.

Meanwhile, the base Hemi-motivated Ram was rated 18 city mpg, 23 highway mpg, and 20 mpg combined. A similarly outfitted standard Hurricane-powered Ram truck receives 18 mpg city, 25 mpg highway, and 21 mpg combined. Admittedly, that’s a minimal fuel-efficiency enhancement, but power and torque demonstrate marked progress. The standard-output Hurricane generates 420 horsepower and 469 pound-feet of torque, 25 horsepower and 59 pound-feet of torque better than the Hemi. With room for improvement, a minor increase in fuel economy and performance is noteworthy for a full-size truck.

In turn, the high-output Hurricane consumes far less fuel than the TRX’s V-8, reflecting 15 city mpg, 21 highway mpg, and 17 mpg combined. Realistically, these fuel consumption gains are satisfactory when considering this engine variant’s performance specifications are 540 horsepower and 521 pound-feet of torque. Alternatively, the TRX achieved a mere 10 mpg city, 14 mpg highway, and 12 mpg combined.
