Chrysler
The history of Chrysler dates back nearly a hundred years. On June 6, 1925 in Michigan, Walter Chrysler founded the Chrysler Corporation from what was left of the Maxwell Motor Company. The company manufactured a vehicle simply called the Chrysler. The 1924 Chrysler was a 6-cylinder automobile and it was generally viewed as a well made product that was also affordable. This was a truly smart move to separate itself as a brand capable of giving the public a technologically advanced vehicle with an attractive price (less than $2,000) making an instant wave of buyers choose Chrysler selling 32,00 units in a single year.
In 1928, Chrysler bought the Dodge Brothers, a successful automotive group, and the company continued growing from there. Walter Chrysler was named Time magazine’s Man of the Year in 1928. The iconic vehicles and attention on brand grew with each year and continued with the creation of the Chrysler Building, a 77 story building made in New York City that served as the highest building in the world for a years at the time of completion.
Chrysler Innovation lead to the 1934 Chrysler Airflow, the first vehicle built in Detroit with the use of a wind tunnel. Walter Chrysler died in 1940, but his company was still growing into one of the most successful brands in the world. By the mid-1950s Chrysler announced the first production electronic fuel injection as an option.
The 1960s saw the boom of American muscle vehicles as Chrysler had its own muscle vehicle take center stage with the 1968 Plymouth Road Runner that Richard Petty, one of NASCAR’s biggest icons, drove to win the 1970 Nascar Championship. Lee Iacocca took over as president and helped reinvent the brand and helped Chrysler rise to prominence after Chrysler experienced some rough sale years. In 1984, Chrysler introduced the first minivan to the public and transformed the auto industry with this key addition to the automotive market. Lee Iaccoca was chairman of the board of the Chrysler Corporation from 1979 to 1992.
In more recent times, the iconic Chrysler 300C was introduced in 2000 as well as the successful PT Cruiser, which was produced for 11 years. In 2015, the all-new Chrysler 200 was introduced as well as the slogan, “America’s Import,” which was a reminder that Chrysler makes their vehicles in America.
Chrysler was founded on the ideal that class would meet a higher standard of vehicle, both in the interior and under the hood. There’s a good chance you’ve seen Chrysler as exactly that; an elegant vehicle that you don’t view as a grossly expensive with out of reach pricing.
