The Ram 1500 has recently become a truly impressive pickup truck. Beating out the competition, winning coveted industry awards, and providing drivers with reliable performance, are just a few bullet points on the Ram 1500’s resume. The now-popular pickup launched back in 1998, and has transformed quite dramatically into what we know today as the 2016 Ram 1500. Undergoing several transformations from minor updates to significant redesigns, the latest Ram 1500 is the most inspiring of any other model year.
While there have been a lot of exciting versions of the Ram 1500, the most intriguing to us so far, is the brand new Ram 1500 EcoDiesel. Aside from being a great overall vehicle, the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel offers one of the most advanced diesel engines to ever grace the mainstream pickup truck segment.
The EcoDiesel performs as it implies, and is targeted towards the driver who wants the power of a diesel engine, without spending their life savings at the gas station pump. Ram took the concerns of avid pickup truck drivers to heart, and created the most advanced diesel engine ever made for a light-duty pickup.
The 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 engine boasts 240 horsepower, 420 lb.-ft. of torque, and can manage to tow up to 9,210 pounds. With that impressive tow rating, and a payload capacity of 1,600 pounds - the Ram 1500 is incredibly powerful when equipped with this engine. Best yet, this amount of power does not translate to poor fuel economy. On the contrary, the EcoDiesel V6 engine on the Ram 1500 manages up to 29 miles per gallon on the highway, and can get up to 21 MPG in the city.
Part of what makes the new EcoDiesel engine so incredible, are the different components that were included when it was engineered. The 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 is equipped with a diesel particulate filter, a diesel oxidation catalyst, and a selective catalyst reduction, all of which work together to provide the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel with a guaranteed emissions test pass in all 50 states.
While we aren’t automotive analysts, we can say with complete confidence that those numbers are at the very least, impressive. Industry experts have taken notice of the new EcoDiesel offering on the latest Ram 1500 model, and they could not agree more.
Widely known for being loud, vibrating, and overall unpleasant to drive, diesel engines have gotten a bad reputation in the past. The Ram 1500 EcoDiesel is changing that age-old perception of the diesel engine, one pickup at a time. Not only are they making drivers happy with their EcoDiesel offering, but they are getting industry experts to take notice as well.
Every year, Ward’s analyzes several aspects of the automotive industry, and awards the vehicles that perform the best with a coveted spot on one of their 10 Best lists. The automotive analyst organization recently announced its winners for the 2016 10 Best Engines awards, and the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel took a top spot.
The automotive experts touted the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel as providing consistent power regardless of the size of the load it was tasked with carrying, and even applauded the quietness that this diesel engine offers. Ward’s credited the Ram’s new EcoDiesel engine has being a strong performer in the fuel efficiency category, even when towing a substantial amount of weight.
The impressive EcoDiesel is not the only option for Ram 1500 buyers this year. The brand recognizes that a diesel engine is not the top choice for everyone, and so it has included two other powerful choices to the lineup.
The base Ram 1500 models come equipped with a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine, which offers silent chain timing for a quieter, more durable ride. The pulse-width-modulated fuel pump and cooling fan give the Ram 1500 a greater fuel economy rating of up to 25 miles per gallon on the highway. The 3.6-liter engine includes variable valve timing, which allows for premium performance and power when it is needed the most. Drivers who opt for this engine can expect 305 horsepower, 269 lb.-ft. of torque, and a towing capacity of up to 7,610 pounds.
Leading the Ram 1500 list of engine offerings is the most powerful 5.7-liter Hemi V8. Offering up to 22 miles per gallon on the highway, this engine may not be the most efficient - but it is the most powerful in the Ram 1500 lineup. With 395 horsepower, and 410 lb.-ft. of torque, drivers can tow up to 10,650 pounds, or haul a payload of 1,810 pounds.
If there is one thing that Ram does well, it’s pickup trucks. Creating an industry-leading diesel engine would mean nothing without the performance components to back it up. The 2016 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel is offered with a list of extended features to make towing and hauling a breeze. Check out a few of these features by exploring below:
Hill Start Assist: Hauling or towing heavy loads can put a strain on your truck’s performance, especially on an incline. With Hill Start Assist, your Ram 1500 will power through tough inclines, without ever rolling backwards during a stop.
Whether you opt for the additional cost of the award-winning EcoDiesel engine, or choose the base Ram 1500, you will not be disappointed.
