Google Android Auto is getting a huge upgrade soon. If unfamiliar with Google Android Auto, it is a downloadable smartphone app that can be installed and operated for free. In an effort to more seamlessly connect consumer’s cars and phones, as well as improve driver safety, the Google Android Auto app replaces the smartphone as the interface when connected to the car. The infotainment touchscreen display then interacts with one’s smartphone via Android Auto, giving the driver options to various apps by using the touchscreen in the dash as the interface rather than the phone. This provides for drivers the ability to keep their eyes on the road rather than scanning their smartphone. Now with its new upgrades and add-ons, Google is packing a lot more features into the Android Auto app, but some wonder if it’s too much.
Recently, the new Google Android Auto platform was tested on a Range Rover Velar (yes, Google works with brands out of the Fiat Chrysler Automobile Group, and the betrayal is bitter). The upgraded app is designed to help keep a balance between the driver and their smartphone, and the new features are really quite something.
Possibly one of the most interesting new features is the way the app shows up on the vehicle’s infotainment touchscreen. Once the Android Auto app connects the smartphone to the vehicle’s infotainment system, Google was immediately able to show off the Android Auto widescreen mode (seen below) due to the Range Rover Velar having a bit of a wide touchscreen. Contained within this widescreen mode was Android Auto’s improved media app in a split-screen that displayed the time and navigation to its right – much like the new split screen feature of the 2019 Ram 1500 new 12-inch vertical touchscreen display.
Included in the media app display was a nifty new feature that displays recent and new downloads the consumer may have acquired since the last time Android Auto was plugged in. At-a-glance, the driver could see albums, audiobook covers, and more that they could listen to while on the road. This new feature was called “content-forward-browsing” by Google. Moreover, metadata could tell the driver if a particular piece of music or an audiobook had already finished downloading, letting the driver know that playback wouldn’t be interrupted due to poor wireless connectivity via the mobile phone.
Wow, the 2019 Ram 1500 has really been dominating the auto industry recently. So much is going for this truck since its debut at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show. First, there were updates on trims such as the Ram 1500 BigHorn (also known as the Lone Star by Texans), Laramie Longhorn, and Tradesman, and then we found out the 2019 Ram 1500 light duty pickup truck would still be as still as affordable as ever, with an MSRP starting at $31,695 (plus destination fee). There was also the presentation at the 2018 Chicago Auto Show; Ram and Mopar presented a new catalog of performance parts to personalize the new Ram truck. What’s more, consumers don’t even need to go for aftermarket accessories to enjoy the 2019 Ram 1500. WardsAuto just named it on their “10 Best Interiors” list, making the new 2019 Ram 1500 pickup truck a winner inside and out.
Is it really any surprise though? When the 2019 Ram 1500 light duty pickup truck debuted, the body and the cabin were completely redesigned in comparison with past alterations. The automaker’s attention to detail is always superb, and this year consumer convenience and comfortability stood out in the interior more than ever. For the 2019 model year, the Ram 1500 integrates acoustic glass and active noise cancellation technologies to create an quiet interior cabin free of traffic noises and the loud music of our neighbors on the road. And it’s pretty clear when talking about technology, there’s one bit of the center console that really catches the eye.
Who said the Ram trucks can’t handle going off-road? If they missed the off-road feature capabilities, and the new off-road package for the 2019 Ram 1500 light duty pickup truck, and our piece on “Three Amazing Off-Road Ram Trucks”, then here’s a little more evidence for the naysayers in one word – Mopar. Does anyone remember the off-road Ram Runner concept image that Mopar showed off several years ago at the 2010 Moab Jeep Safari event? Sadly, the kit is no longer available, but off-road enthusiasts need not worry. Take a look at how the new off-road package matches up with the kit by Mopar.
Mopar Ram Runner Kit
As noted, back in 2010, Mopar showed up with the “Mopar Ram Runner Kit”. Developed in conjunction with Baja off-road racer Kent Kroeker, the kit had a number of components, including an additional Pre-Runner Stage II Lift Kit, off-road front bumper, off-road front and rear fenders, off-road rear-tire carrier, sport performance hood and cat-back exhaust. For people interested in more ground clearance, there was also the Pre-Runner Stage II LIft Kit. It included the following: a 5-link coil-spring rear suspension, 4130 chromoly lower control arms, upper control arms rebuildable high-angle ball joints, and forged steel, high-angle tie rods. This kit added fourteen inches of suspension travel in the front and rear, and provided 13 inches of ground clearance in the front and 16 inches of ground clearance at the rocker panels.
2019 Ram 1500 Off-Road Package
The Ram 1500 has always had off-road capability available, but nothing like the capability with the 2019 1500. A new off-road package has been added for the next-generation pickup truck, and it may match up with the old Mopar Ram Runner kit. The package adds a one-inch suspension lift, with or without available four-corner air suspension, an electronic-locking rear differential, and 32-inch on/off-road tires on (standard) 18- or (available) 20-inch wheels to provide additional grip. Denoted by rear-fender decals equipped with the 4×4 Off-road Package, any 2019 Ram 1500 modded with this package will be unmistakable from the rest. The transfer cases have also been upgraded with BorgWarner 48-12 for part-time 4WD operation with Hi and Low ranges and the BorgWarner 48-11 for on-demand 4WD.
Some truck owners out there have at one time or another realized they have no clue how to hitch up a trailer to their truck. Loading cargo into a vehicle is one thing, but hauling it all as a separate unit a part from the vehicle can be a little tricky at first. Aside from getting the proper trailer, assuming the object(s) being towed require one, a truck owner needs to know how to properly connect the trailer to their truck, or they may lose all of their cargo before even leaving the driveway. Worse if things come undone while on the highway, so let’s chat about loading up a truck and connecting the hitch.
Keeping a Center of Gravity with Cargo
Weight is important to keep in mind when loading cargo onto a trailer. Making sure the weight is balanced will help to avoid issues while on the road. Most experienced truck drivers would say to keep a good ratio of 60 percent of the cargo weight towards the front half of the trailer (unless directed otherwise by the trailer manufacturer), and make sure it’s the heavy stuff first, to keep the truck’s center of gravity closer to its rear axle. The remaining 40 percent of the cargo goes towards the rear half of the trailer- using some of the heavy stuff works here too to keep an equal balance across the trailer. Your best bet is to put the heaviest cargo over the trailer axles.
Mudding and water-fording are terms known mainly by Jeepers. Vehicles like the Jeep® Renegade, Jeep Wrangler, and even the Jeep Compass are made to go off-road, and they are able to handle varying terrain or the occasional rock crawling. Now that the 2019 Ram 1500 has been unveiled and it has new off-roading features, the light duty Ram truck can also play in the mud and get a little dirty. But first, there are some modifications one should look into before turning their pickup truck into a mud monster.
When going mudding, it’s a good move to make sure one’s vehicle can handle deep mud or water. The 2019 Ram 1500 is available with several wheel options, and they range from 18 to 22 inches, but when it comes to off-roading, tires matter more than the size of the wheels. To really improve the mudding or off-roading experience, make sure the truck is fitted with tires that match the activity, such as multi-terrain or all-terrain tires made for rocky terrain and going off-road, or swamper tires made for getting out of a nasty mess.
To keep those wheels turning, beadlocks are also a good addition. Beadlocks help keep the tires in check when going off-road and mudding, and although some drivers lower the air pressure in their tires for better traction and sidewall flexibility, beadlock wheels mechanically lock the tire bead to the rim. This takes the decrease of tire pressure for better traction out of the equation and helps ensure that the tires remain in place no matter how wild one may maneuver their Ram truck while out on the trail.
The 2019 Ram 1500 truck debuted back in January at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show, and since then it’s quickly taken over the spotlight for light duty pickup trucks. More news about the truck and its capabilities have come out, and we’ve seen some new high-end and luxury trims, Mopar and Ram teamed up for the 2018 Chicago Auto Show, and most recently we got the starting MSRP. Yes, the pricing for the 2019 Ram 1500 has been announced, but before we talk about the affordable price range, let’s remember what Ram is bringing to the table.
Power and Capability
The second vehicle to sport it, the 2019 Ram 1500 comes with the option to add the new eTorque system from FCA into its powertrain (standard on the V6 engine). With two engines currently available to the pickup truck, a 305 horsepower 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine and a 395 horsepower 5.7-liter V8 HEMI engine, both are able to generate torque at a standstill thanks to the new eTorque system. When revving up, the V6 can deliver 269 lb-ft of torque with an additional 90 lb-ft with the eTorque system. The V8 HEMI on the other hand can generate up to 410 lb-ft of torque, and if opting in for the eTorque system option, the V8 HEMI receives an addition of 120 lb-ft of torque to its threshold.
For the 2019 model year, the Ram 1500 light duty pickup truck has been given a new 4×4 off-road package. Already designed to act as an off-road vehicle thanks to Ram’s four-corner air suspension system and a front and rear stabilizer bar, the 2019 Ram 1500 lineup has even more options. Available on most trims, drivers can now go off-road by opting in for the off-road package that adds a one-inch suspension lift, with or without the available four-corner air suspension, an electronic-locking rear differential, robust skid plate protection (transfer case, steering, engine and gas tank), tow hooks, hill-descent control for added off-road capability, and 32-inch on/off-road tires on (standard) 18- or (available) 20-inch wheels to provide additional grip.
With the 2019 Ram 1500 coming out soon, and the pricing having been announced, we thought this would be a good time to do a comparison. At Miami Lakes Automall, we sell seven brands, including the top-selling truck brands, Ram and Chevrolet. To keep things fair however, we’ll match up both 2018 models when looking at their power and capacities. After all, we all know the specs to look for are their capabilities.
First things first, let’s clearly define the configuration of each truck. The highest trim on the 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is a High Country with a crew cab and four-wheel-drive. It is also available with a short truck bed or standard truck bed. To give both trucks the best chance, we’ll go with the standard 178” or 6’5” truck bed. That means for the 2018 Ram 1500, we’ll also go with a crew cab, also available with two truck bed sizes, and the Limited trim (the highest trim level), and we’re hooking it up with a 6’4” truck bed and a 4×4 drivetrain.
The 2019 Ram 1500 debuted at the Detroit Auto Show in January 2018, and since then has been making headway with a new announcement every few weeks. Just recently, details and media about the Ram 1500 Laramie Longhorn were released. Now, the original “Texas Truck,” the 2019 Ram 1500 has one more job to do – get work done, so say “hello” to the 2019 Ram 1500 Lone Star.
Popping up at the 2018 Dallas Auto Show, the new 2019 Ram 1500 Lone Star trim received a heart-felt welcome when it debuted. The Ram 1500 Lone Star trim is the brand’s top selling truck in Texas, so it only made sense to make its first stop the heart of Texas. With working hands in mind, the 2019 Ram 1500 Lone Star comes with a new look and many options for customizing one’s pickup truck to their wants and need.
To stand out from the rest of the 2019 Ram 1500 lineup, the Ram 1500 Lone Star comes standard with bright front and rear bumpers, chrome door handle centers, a bright grille surround with billet inserts, 18-inch aluminum wheels, and fog lamps for the exterior. Consumers have the option of outfitting the 2019 Ram 1500 Lone Star with a Crew Cab or Quad Cab, and there’s a 5’7” or 6’4” truck bed available Crew Cab configurations; only a 6’4” truck bed can be installed when going for the Quad Cab configuration. Consumers also have the ability to choose a 4×4 or 4×4 drivetrain thanks to the new off-road features available on the new 2019 Ram 1500. When the 2019 Ram 1500 Lone Star is first made available, it will only be available with the 5.7-liter HEMI V8 engine, but there is speculation that the 3.6-liter V6 Pentastar engine will be made available at a later date.
When it comes to the interior, consumers have a lot more options to configure the 2019 Ram 1500 Lone Star. For one, consumers may choose the choice of a six-passenger bench in the front or the option of installing five-passenger bucket seats. Has that ever been an option on a Ram light duty pickup truck? It sounds like a blend of the Ram 1500 and a Ram ProMaster City cargo van. Of course, the standard seating option will be the usual 60/40 split rear bench seat.
Then there’s a whole lot of package options available with the 2019 Ram 1500 Lone Star trim. Many of these include function-specific enhancements to further advance one’s ability to get the job done with the 2019 Ram 1500. Package options include a Bed Utility Group, a 4×4 Off-road Group, a Protection Group, Trailer Tow Mirrors and Brake Group, Max Towing Package, and Premium Lighting Group. There are also several options to further the ability to configure the Lone Star pickup truck with the class-exclusive Active Level Air Suspension, electric-locking rear axle, Blind-spot Monitoring, and 20-inch aluminum wheels.
Keep in mind, all of these options are available on just the Ram 1500 Lone Star trim. The 2019 Ram 1500 pickup truck still offers many great features even in its raw form. The new 2019 Ram 1500 has the strongest frame of any Ram truck to date. The truck’s frame is made of 98 percent high-strength steel, but somehow the truck managed to shed 225 pounds by making greater use of aluminum on various truck components.
Standard on the 5.7L HEMI V8 engine and a 3.6L V6 powertrains is an eTorque system that provides hybrid capabilities and additional power. Without the eTorque system, the 5.7-liter HEMI V8 is capable of generating 410 lb-ft of torque, but with the eTorque system, it gets an additional 130 lb-ft of torque at its disposal.
Don’t forget about all the great tech either. For the first-time ever on a pickup truck, a 12-inch touchscreen is available. The new screen provides access to the Uconnect 4 infotainment system and it is able to display two screens at once with two separate functions or take up the whole screen with navigation. Uconnect on an 8.4-inch touchscreen is of course still available for those that prefer the old cabin setup. The 2019 Ram 1500 will be the first vehicle to host the new Sirius 360L platform, a next-generation Sirius that learns what the user listens to and can be accessed virtually anywhere. Some added safety has also been added, a 360 surround view camera has been added to the truck and it provides the driver with a birds-eye view of the vehicle, and the available blind spot system with trailer coverage helps drivers feel more at ease while on the road.

During the 2018 Chicago Auto Show, Ram and Mopar teamed up for an all-new product presentation. Many thought Mopar was going to announce a Mopar ‘18 Ram 1500, but as it turns out, they’ve done something completely different. Instead of creating a whole new Mopar-ized Ram 1500, Mopar has actually gone a pure accessory route, opening a whole new catalog like the ones they have for Jeep and Dodge.
Let’s take a quick look at Mopar over the years. Having hit its 80 Years Anniversary in 2017, a lot of celebrations took place throughout the year. What started out as an automotive products and accessory store, Mopar was simply a combination of “MOtor” and “PARts”. As time went on and technology opened all sorts of new possibilities, Mopar grew and expanded into other industries. Soon enough, Mopar went from a parts and accessories store to a shop that specializes in customizing and modifying automobiles.
Mopar was the first to…
– Develop vehicle-information apps for smartphones that let drivers know about the condition of their vehicle remotely
– Design a new interactive vehicle tracking device that could monitor a vehicle’s speed and location, much like the many copycat products out there today
– Put Wi-fi wireless hotspots in vehicles
– Go paperless with owner’s manuals, introducing a new age of digital forms that one can view on their smartphone
– Create the wiADVISOR, a tablet-based service lane tool for faster automotive service for FCA vehicles via dealership service departments
With all that under their belt, Mopar decided to take one of its most loved car brands and modify it as much as they could for their 80th anniversary. In 2017, Mopar designed and produced two Dodge Challengers with custom two-tone paint jobs done by hand, added on a Mopar 392 logo, 20-inch aluminum wheels, Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat black exhaust tips, put a 6.4-liter 392 HEMI under the hood, boosted performance with a cold air intake system, modified strut tower braces and caps for increased rigidity and handling, four-piston Brembo brakes to provide exceptional stopping power, trimmed seats in tungsten leather, and more. Only 80 units were made and all 80 were sold out before the year’s end.
Following this, Mopar opened three new parts distribution centers, two of which were built in the U.S., to provide better service and availability to their many customers. In conjunction with this, Mopar opened their 1300th Mopar Express Lane to provide quick service for consumers of FCA vehicles. Mopar also developed a protection plan, known as the Mopar 360 Protection Plan, and have sold 3.5 million plans in total since its conception.
Over the past 80 years, Mopar has customized over 300,000 vehicles in Mopar Custom Auto Shops. They do this because they know how much it means for people to be able to customize their vehicles. Not only does it add support and add value to automotive brands, but it creates an emotional connection between car and driver. So when their 80th Anniversary rolled around, they went with the most customized vehicle in the Mopar portfolio – a Dodge Challenger. On average, customers have been known to spend over $1k in mods or accessories when customizing their Dodge Challenger muscle car.
On a global scale, the most customized vehicle is the Jeep Wrangler, named the hottest 4×4 SUV at SEMA for the past 8 years. 98% of Jeep Wranglers are customized with at least one Mopar accessory, and recently, Mopar launched a new portfolio with 200 accessories for the Jeep Wrangler. Many of those accessories showed up on the Wrangler at the Chicago Auto Show (seen below).
What’s Ram Have to Do with It?
By the end of 2017, Ram had its best year ever, in sales and market share. When the 2019 came out, Ram had changed how truck buyers look at strength, performance, efficiency, technology, and luxury. The 2019 Ram 1500:
– Has the strongest frame of any Ram truck before, made with 98% high-strength steel for maximum durability
– Implemented the eTorque system in the V6 and HEMI V8 engines, able to add another 130 lb-ft of torque to the already 410 lb-ft of torque generated by the HEMI V8
– Developed and installed new technology – (1) a 360 surround view camera, and (2) a blind spot system with trailer coverage, able to detect how long and wide one’s trailer is while on the road and around turns
– Installed the 12-inch touchscreen, a first for trucks everywhere, coupled with Sirius 360L on-demand technology that learns what people listen to and makes Sirius available virtually anywhere
– Uses new luxury materials in the interior, specifically for the 2019 Ram 1500 Laramie Longhorn and Limited trims, made with an extensive use of authentic wood, leather, and metal materials. The interior was said to be the “Best in the Detroit Auto Show”, but no awards showed up for that one
– Has extra wheel base space with 4” added to the cab and more space in the rear. The increased interior cabin space not only improves ride quality, but Ram also added a reclining rear seat in the cab for more leg room
– Is capable of hauling a 2300 lbs payload and/or towing 12,750 lbs when powered by the HEMI V8
– Has a total of six trims in the new 2019 lineup, all of which vary in personality and (optional) looks
Mopar and Ram
Following its debut, Mopar opened a new catalog featuring 200 plus accessories produced specifically for the Ram 1500. Between the catalog for the Wrangler and the Ram 1500, 200,000 hours were invested into the design, testing, and validation of those 200 new parts. 80,000 hours of the 200,000 was dedicated to the Ram 1500. Going forward, consumers will have over 200 pieces for customizing the new 2019 Ram 1500 to make them unique for different wants, needs, and lifestyles.
To showcase this, Mopar made a 2019 Ram 1500 with an active outdoorsy lifestyle. The new features and capabilities start in the back with an all-new Ram-rack, a fully adjustable system that attaches to rails in the truck bed and can carry oversized cargo that can’t fit with the length of the bed. Mopar also added:
– A Mopar 2” Lift kit
– Beadlock capable wheels
– BFG KO2 35”tires for additional grip
– New truck bed rails
– All new Off-road running boards tucked up close to the body for maximum ground clearance, covered with spray-on bedliner material for extra grip
– Mopar’s Ram airflow cold air intake system under the hood of the 2019 Ram 1500
– A Katback exhaust system with black chrome tips
– Katzkin leather for the upholstery
– Stainless steel door sill guards
– and Bucket style floor mats
That’s all we learned from the webcast this morning, but we’re sure more information will be released as the Chicago Auto Show continues and 2018 keeps chugging along. Word is, Ram and Mopar will be putting on a product presentation at the 2018 Chicago Auto Show on Friday, February 9th, 2018. Given Mopar’s history, we think we already know what it is. But first, why is this news? Unless getting into the Chicago Auto Show, then does it really matter? Well that’s why this year, Ram and Mopar will be hosting a webcast live from the Chicago Auto Show at 11 am Eastern/10 am Central.
About the Mopar Brand
Mopar first started out as a custom auto parts business but soon became the one-stop shop for all things performance. Known for their performance parts catalog, Mopar can exchange the exhaust for the cat-back exhaust for a more aggressive sound and less tension, install a cold air intake system for more horsepower, or even trim the interior upholstery with Katzkin leather interior seating for amazing comfort. They’re also known for several vehicle firsts.
For the first time-ever, automobiles came with vehicle-information apps, apps for smartphones that can let drivers know about the condition of their vehicle, even from afar thanks to Mopar’s innovation. Mopar was also the first to market a new interactive vehicle tracking device that sends owner a text when the vehicle is driven too fast or too far based on pre-set parameters; several products and Chevrolet’s Teen Driver surely got the idea from here.
