Ford and Chevrolet will have to make room – there’s a new champ in town as the 2019 Ram 1500 has been crowned king at the 2019 Detroit Auto Show. The all-new 2019 Ram 1500 is the latest recipient of top honors at the 2019 Detroit Auto Show as the North American Truck of the Year. Reimagined in 2018 and debuting at last year’s show, the all-new 1500 made its way to dealer lots the past Summer. Consumers have the ability to choose from a vast range of models and trims complete with luxurious interiors, and improved payload and towing capacity when compared to its predecessor. A panel of media jurors from the U.S. and Canada is responsible for determining the winner.
A large part of the Ram 1500’s success can be attributed to its eTorque mild-hybrid system. Standard on all V6 engines, and optional on the V8 HEMI powertrain option, the eTorque system runs from a 48-volt battery that replaces the alternator and is responsible for reducing the burden of running additional electronics from the engine. In fact, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) engineers claim that the all-new Ram 1500 saves 1.7 ounces of fuel at an average 90-second stoplight when options with the V8 engine and eTorque system. Payload and towing capacity remain unchanged regardless of the addition of the system since it weighs about 100 pounds total and the compact batteries reside in the dead space behind the rear seat bench. In the long run, those 1.7 ounces saved add up, making the all-new Ram 1500 one of the most fuel-efficient pickups in the light-duty segment.
The Ram brand sold a total of 537,000 units in 2018, a substantial increase of 7.2 percent when compared with the prior year. Much of its success is largely attributed to its impressive redesign. Thanks to the substantial units gained, FCA and Ram both conquered a considerable share of the pickup segment and now pose as a credible threat to crosstown rivals Chevrolet and Ford. Reid Bigland, head of the Ram brand, is happy to reap the benefits of the Ram’s latest success, stating “It’s great that consumers can see what we see in the Ram 1500.”
Truck buyers who need a pickup for work but would also want a nice interior and advanced tech features are the perfect suitors for Ram. Weekend warriors and commuters alike are poised to benefit from the 1500. As for the brand’s strategy, it’s clear their interest lies in recreating some of the magic of the 1500 and spreading it onto the other pickups in the lineup as evidenced by the latest debut of heavy-duty trucks at the Detroit Auto Show. While the latest heavy-duty trucks from Ram offer serious towing capability and payload capacity, their interiors are outfitted with features intending to make the ride as pleasant as possible.

Pickup trucks continue to make the headlines, and we’re eating up every second of it. Taking place at the annual San Antonio Auto and Truck Show, Green Car Journal announced their finalists for its high-profile Green Car Awards. The list of finalists for the 2019 Green Truck of the Year includes the Chevrolet Colorado, Chevrolet Silverado, Ford F-150, Ford Ranger, and the Ram 1500. In addition to the Green Truck of the Year award, the Ford Special Service Plug-in Hybrid Sedan, Ford Transit Connect, Mercedes-Benz Metris, Ram ProMaster City, and the Ram 1500 also made the cut as a finalist for the 2019 Commercial Green Car of the Year.
For the 2019 model year, the Chevy Colorado mid-size pickup features an efficient turbo diesel engine that achieves 30 highway mpg, while its sister model, the all-new Silverado, shed a few hundred pounds over the past year and also now offers a new efficient turbo diesel option. In addition to the Ford F-150 adding a new diesel powerplant into the equation, automaker’s are anxiously awaiting the arrival of the all-new mid-size Ford Ranger pickup truck – after taking a seven-year-long sabbatical. Known as the most fuel-efficient pickup truck in its segment, the Ram 1500 features an all-new efficiency-enhancing eTorque mild-hybrid system in its 3.6-liter V6 and 5.7-liter HEMI V8 engine options.
“There’s no doubt this is a hot year for pickups and light commercial vehicles,” said Ron Cogan, editor, and publisher of Green Car Journal and GreenCarJournal.com. “With the availability of new-generation pickups and more efficient engine choices, this field of 2019 finalists definitely speaks to pickup and light commercial vehicle buyers who require ‘greener’ vehicles that also deliver high levels of style and functionality.”
In regards to functionality and efficiency during daily commercial operations, the Mercedes-Benz Metris, Ram ProMaster City, and the new-generation Ford Transit Connect were designed with tradesman and delivery service fleets in mind. After initially making its debut at the 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show, Ford released an all-new Special Service Plug-in Hybrid Sedan. This new model is designed for police and fire chiefs, detectives, and law enforcement personnel who don’t necessarily require a pursuit-rated vehicle. When powered by the 7.6-kWh lithium-ion battery pack, the new police plug-in hybrid sedan has an all-electric driving range of 21 miles that can be achieved at speeds up to 85 mph. Once the battery juice is almost depleted, the gasoline-electric hybrid generates an additional range of more than 500 miles.
“The trend toward higher efficiency and greater environmental performance is reflected by the growing number of ‘greener’ new models shown every year at the San Antonio Auto & Truck Show,” said Pam Crail, president of San Antonio Auto Dealers Association. “It’s especially important to recognize these achievements through the Green Truck of the Year™ and Commercial Green Car of the Year™ awards at our show, given South Texas’ reputation as the heart and soul of the truck country.”
Considered to play a significant role of Green Car Journal’s mission, the Green Car Awards showcase the environmental progress and its importance in the automotive industry. Purchasing a pickup truck can sometimes be a tricky process, specifically concerning how big the bed is, its towing capabilities, and engine power, among other things. Unfortunately, when buying a pickup truck, fuel efficiency usually isn’t at the top of the priority list. Today, as modern technology evolves, fortunately, so does engine technology. Currently, a lot of trucks offer impressive horsepower, plenty of torque, high payload ratings, and all while saving consumers a few bucks at the pump. And so, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) has launched a new eTorque 48-volt mild hybrid system on its all-new 2019 Ram 1500 V8 and V6 engines – prompting some impressive MPG figures.
When equipped with the 3.6-liter V6 engine, 4×2 configuration, and the new eTorque technology, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the 2019 Ram 1500 can deliver 20 mpg in the city, 25 on the highway, and 22 mpg combined (with real-wheel drivetrain). Additionally, once the pickup truck has the four-wheel drive added, all three MPG numbers drop by one number – 19 mpg in the city, 24 mpg on the highway, and 21 mpg combined. Those are significant improvements in comparison to last year, which without the eTorque system, the Ram 1500 had a maximum fuel efficiency of 17 mpg in the city, 25 mpg on the highway, and 20 mpg combined.
Furthermore, when the 2019 Ram 1500 is loaded by the more powerful 5.7-liter V8 eTorque system, the EPA figures show 17 mpg in the city, 23 mpg on the highway, and 19 mpg combined – once in two-wheel-drive. Clearly, the numbers decrease a little bit and are still good. Fortunately, because of the mild-hybrid capabilities of the 48-volt system, the 2019 Ram 1500 eTorque system essentially combines the advantages of idling on battery power when the engine is on and the effortless acceleration of an electric motor before slowly transitioning to all-gas power.
In taking the place of the standard alternator, the 2018 Ram 1500’s eTorque system offers a ten-horsepower electric motor and a lithium-ion battery pack, along with the conventional lead-acid battery. For the 2019 model year, the body of the Ram 1500 is the model for efficiency through engineering. Due to the Ram’s innovative multi-link coil and solid-rear axle arrangement, frequency response damping shock absorbers, and the enhanced aerodynamics, the smaller electric motor delivers more refined and smoother gear shifts. Also, the Ram 1500 sheds about 225 pounds thanks to those improved aerodynamics, and with a towing capacity of nearly 13,000 pounds, the all-new 2019 Ram 1500 certainly doesn’t sacrifice capabilities either. All-in-all, it’s clear why the 2019 Ram 1500 wins the title as the most efficient full-size pickup truck on the market.
