2020 Ram 1500 Buying Guide

The 2020 Ram 1500 is the diamond of the existing Ram lineup, plain and simple. From the humble entry-level Tradesman trim to the top-tier Limited trim and every other trim in-between, the thoughtfully designed pickup truck impresses buyers like no others. Sales figures can certainly attest to that, given that Ram has completely taken over the second best-selling truck spot from Chevy. With capabilities that go above and beyond what buyers expect from a pickup truck, the Ram 1500 delivers thanks to its strong fuel economy numbers and its array of engine options. Those not behind the wheel of a 2020 Ram 1500 are doing themselves a disservice and here’s why: Read the rest of this entry >>

The 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 With eTorque Named to Wards 10 Best Engines List

The fuel-saving 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine with eTorque strikes again, as the engine was just named to the list of Wards 10 Best Engines and Propulsion Systems for the second consecutive year. Rated at 305 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, the Pentastar with electrification is the standard powertrain on the popular Ram 1500 model. The Pentastar is paired with a TorqueFlite 850RE eight-speed automatic transmission.

“The Pentastar V6 with eTorque is a great example of giving consumers electrified powertrain technology that seamlessly works with their daily lives. The standard eTorque system delivers better fuel economy without compromising power or capability,” said Micky Bly, Head of Global Propulsion Systems.

With its main function as a replacement to a traditional alternator, the eTorque system features a belt-driven motor generator unit that’s responsible for several functions on the pickup truck. There’s a 48-volt battery pack that’s powering the motor generator unit and enables the system to improve fuel efficiency, performance, value, and drivability. There are six different modes of operation available, including: quick and seamless stop-start functions and energy recovery with brake regeneration that supports increased towing capacity and payload figures.

The eTorque system sends up to 90 lb-ft of supplemental torque to the engine crankshaft, helping the vehicle restart seamlessly during stop-start maneuvers such as when waiting at a red light. During this function, torque travels to the wheels within 400 milliseconds — that’s more than twice as fast as traditional stop-start systems.

“There are lots of drivers who dislike stop-start systems because the engine may turn back on with a shudder, or they might think the engine won’t restart at all. But the Ram 1500’s 48-volt eTorque system is so smooth, quiet and consistently reliable that truck owners will appreciate the technology – and the money they can save at the pump,” said Tom Murphy, WardsAuto managing editor.

The 2020 Ram 1500 model powered by the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 with eTorque is rated at 20 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway when equipped with rear-wheel-drive, while the four-wheel-drive models are rated at 19 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway. When compared to the previous-generation model, the all-new Ram 1500 boasts an 18 percent improvement in city mpg and a 10 percent improvement on the combined mpg figures. The 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine with eTorque is also offered in the 2020 Jeep Wrangler Sahara four-door model.

While the engine’s running, the eTorque system feeds a 48-volt current to a cobalt-graphite battery. The battery pack even includes a DC-to-DC converter that helps not only maintain the battery’s state of charge, but it also converts the 48 volts to 12 volts so that the Ram’s accessories and its conventional 12-volt lead-acid battery can be charged as well. The eTorque system even offers regenerative braking, which recaptures energy during deceleration and braking to charge the existing battery pack. Additionally, eTorque helps reduce noise, vibration and harshness by enhancing the driving experience and adding torque to the crankshaft during gear changes.
