Pickup trucks continue to make the headlines, and we’re eating up every second of it. Taking place at the annual San Antonio Auto and Truck Show, Green Car Journal announced their finalists for its high-profile Green Car Awards. The list of finalists for the 2019 Green Truck of the Year includes the Chevrolet Colorado, Chevrolet Silverado, Ford F-150, Ford Ranger, and the Ram 1500. In addition to the Green Truck of the Year award, the Ford Special Service Plug-in Hybrid Sedan, Ford Transit Connect, Mercedes-Benz Metris, Ram ProMaster City, and the Ram 1500 also made the cut as a finalist for the 2019 Commercial Green Car of the Year.

For the 2019 model year, the Chevy Colorado mid-size pickup features an efficient turbo diesel engine that achieves 30 highway mpg, while its sister model, the all-new Silverado, shed a few hundred pounds over the past year and also now offers a new efficient turbo diesel option. In addition to the Ford F-150 adding a new diesel powerplant into the equation, automaker’s are anxiously awaiting the arrival of the all-new mid-size Ford Ranger pickup truck – after taking a seven-year-long sabbatical. Known as the most fuel-efficient pickup truck in its segment, the Ram 1500 features an all-new efficiency-enhancing eTorque mild-hybrid system in its 3.6-liter V6 and 5.7-liter HEMI V8 engine options.

“There’s no doubt this is a hot year for pickups and light commercial vehicles,” said Ron Cogan, editor, and publisher of Green Car Journal and GreenCarJournal.com. “With the availability of new-generation pickups and more efficient engine choices, this field of 2019 finalists definitely speaks to pickup and light commercial vehicle buyers who require ‘greener’ vehicles that also deliver high levels of style and functionality.”

In regards to functionality and efficiency during daily commercial operations, the Mercedes-Benz Metris, Ram ProMaster City, and the new-generation Ford Transit Connect were designed with tradesman and delivery service fleets in mind. After initially making its debut at the 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show, Ford released an all-new Special Service Plug-in Hybrid Sedan. This new model is designed for police and fire chiefs, detectives, and law enforcement personnel who don’t necessarily require a pursuit-rated vehicle. When powered by the 7.6-kWh lithium-ion battery pack, the new police plug-in hybrid sedan has an all-electric driving range of 21 miles that can be achieved at speeds up to 85 mph. Once the battery juice is almost depleted, the gasoline-electric hybrid generates an additional range of more than 500 miles.

“The trend toward higher efficiency and greater environmental performance is reflected by the growing number of ‘greener’ new models shown every year at the San Antonio Auto & Truck Show,” said Pam Crail, president of San Antonio Auto Dealers Association. “It’s especially important to recognize these achievements through the Green Truck of the Year™ and Commercial Green Car of the Year™ awards at our show, given South Texas’ reputation as the heart and soul of the truck country.”

Considered to play a significant role of Green Car Journal’s mission, the Green Car Awards showcase the environmental progress and its importance in the automotive industry. Gone are the days when trucks were created for one of two things – off-roading or being put to work, both of which meant a lack of interior comforts. Yet, time’s are a-changin’, and Ram is transforming their workhorses into luxurious pickup trucks, and the all-new 2019 Ram 1500 Rebel 12 Special Edition is no exception. Head of the Ram Brand, Jim Morrison, stated: “customers have been asking for additional high-end features on the Rebel, and now we’re delivering with benchmark technology and materials wrapped in off-road capability.”

Beginning with the power underneath the hood, for the 2019 model year, the Ram Rebel 12 Special Edition is offered on the Ram 1500 model with any cab, color, or powertrain configuration. The Ram Rebel 12 is powered by the standard mild-hybrid 3.6-liter V6 engine that produces 305 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque. Consumers also have the option to upgrade to a 5.7-liter V8 engine or a mild-hybrid version that both produce 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque. All engine options are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, plus a standard four-wheel drive system and an electronic-locking rear differential. Furthermore, the Rebel 12 rides on standard 33-inch Wrangler DuraTrac tires, comes with skid plates that protect the major mechanical components from scraping against the terrain and has Bilstein shocks for improved riding comfort.

When it comes to the infotainment system, Ram spared no expense. The most significant upgrade goes to the 12-inch infotainment system with navigation in comparison to the 8.4-inch display that’s standard on the Rebel trim. “Expanding the availability of the segment-leading Uconnect 4C 12-inch touchscreen is a direct response to market demand,” says Jim Morrison. The fourth generation of Uconnect included in the infotainment system features enhanced processing power, multi-touch gestures, vivid imagery, sharper graphics, and smartphone integrations via Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto. Plus, SiriusXM with 360L on-demand content and state-of-the-art listening experience.

Considered by Ram “the finest audio system ever available in a pickup,” the 2019 Ram 1500 Rebel 12 Special Edition also features a 19-speaker Harman Kardon system with a 900-watt surround-sound amplifier, 10-inch subwoofer, and active noise cancellation. Similar to the rest of the 2019 Ram pickup truck lineup, the Ram 1500 Rebel 12 delivers an all-new interior cabin with leather-trimmed seating with heated front seats, black and red interior color theme, and notable metal speaker grilles accented with the Rebel’s signature Radar Red metallic-coated finish.

In addition to the amazing features included on the 2019 Ram 1500 Rebel 12, it seems that Ram has also decided to dust itself off and get back into the midsize pickup truck game, especially since Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) discontinued the Dodge Dakota in 2011. According to Automotive News, FCA, Ram Trucks parent company, is doubling down on the midsize market with this as-yet-unnamed body-on-frame truck and the forthcoming Jeep Wrangler pickup. Back in June, Mike Manley, newly-appointed CEO of FCA, promised consumers the truck in a presentation but was very discreet about the details – only mentioning that we should expect to see this new baby Ram sometime in 2020.

The 2019 Ram 1500 Rebel 12 has a starting MSRP of $48,685 (plus destination fee), compared to the standard Rebel that is priced at $44,695. Consumers should expect to see the Rebel 12 in dealerships during the fourth quarter of 2018. Mike Manley, the successor to the late Sergio Marchionne, released his new executive leadership team in a letter to his employees on October 1st, 2018. Consisting of a diverse mix of American and European executives, Manley is transitioning company veterans into new roles at leading brands – effective immediately.

For starters, Manley stated that Tim Kuniskis, who will continue his role as global head of Alfa Romeo, will also now be in charge of Jeep in North America. Kuniskis, after overseeing the production launch of the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon last year, was promoted to the head of Alfa Romeo. Maintaining his role as the lead for Ram, Reid Bigland will also keep his roles for Canadian operations and U.S. sales. Furthermore, Pietro Gorlier was named as the lead for European operations. According to Autotrader Executive Analyst, Michelle Krebs, “The appointment of Kuniskis to Jeep and Bigland to Ram are logical, solid choices. Both brands, particularly Jeep, are critical to FCA’s future success,” she said.

“Having been deeply involved in the development of the plan, I can tell you that it was created with the sure knowledge that we have the depth and breadth of talent and skills we need to meet our objective of becoming one of the world’s most profitable automakers,” Manley said in the letter to his employees. “One key element in the plan is to ensure that our leadership team is best aligned to our objectives going forward.”

Here is the full list of appointments:

  • Scott Garberding: Successor to Stefan Ketter, Garberding was named the global chief manufacturing officer. With almost 30 years of industrial experience at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) underneath his belt, Stefan Garberding has also led North American manufacturing and recently led global quality as well.
  • Tim Kuniskis: While maintaining his role as global head of Alfa Romeo, Kuniskis will now be head of Jeep brand North America as well.
  • Reid Bigland: After previously leading Ram in 2013-2014, Bigland will once again lead the Ram Brand while also keeping his roles in leading Canadian operations and U.S. sales.
  • Steve Beahm: While maintaining his role as head of the Chrysler, Dodge, and Fiat Brands in North America, Steve Beahm will now be head of Mopar in North America.
  • Pietro Gorlier: Former chief operating officer of FCA business components, Gorlier was named the COO of the company’s Europe, Middle East, and Africa region while maintaining his role as head of Mopar globally.
  • Ermanno Ferrari: After recently serving as head of Magneti Marelli’s lighting division, Ferrari will now be the CEO and also join the Group Executive Council (GEC).
  • Harald Wester: Will maintain his role as Chief Operating Officer (COO) for Maserati and also his role as chief technology officer.
  • Richard Schwarzwald: After previously leading FCA’s quality organization in Latin America, Schwarzwald is now Scott Garberding’s successor as global head of quality.
  • Mark Champine: Head of quality in North America.
  • Geraldo Barra: Head of quality in Latin America.

Manley, who has previously led Jeep and Ram globally before succeeding the late Sergio Marchionne, referred to the new management team as an “evolution” and is confident that this will be the best help to execute the newest five-year plan.

“The next five years will continue to be extremely challenging for our industry, with tougher regulations, intense competition and probably slower industry growth around the world. Nevertheless, with a laser focus on execution and a continued flexibility that allows us to adjust as circumstances change — something that has become one of our most unique characteristics and strengths — we have a clear line of sight to achieving our five-year ambitions.” – Mike Manley

Just in time for the State Fair of Texas, Ram is making headlines once again by debuting the all-new 2018 Heavy Duty Longhorn Ram Rodeo Edition. Available in the 2500 or 3500 models, the Ram Rodeo Edition builds on the Longhorn’s unique Southwestern theme by featuring a suede headliner that is paired with one-of-a-kind interior colors like Black and Cattle Tan.

Earning the title of “Luxury Pickup Truck of Texas” from the Texas Auto Writers Association (TAWA) for the second year in a row, the 2018 Longhorn Ram Rodeo Edition is the world’s benchmark for upscale pickup trucks. Not only does the Ram Rodeo Edition exhume some serious curb appeal, but there’s also no mistaking just what kind of beast the consumer is driving – especially with the notable “LONGHORN” badging that is stretched across the width of the tailgate. Exterior upgrades include body-colored bumpers and side-steps, along with the available six exterior colors that include Walnut Brown, Brilliant Black Crystal, Bright White, Pearl White, Delmonico Red, and Granite Crystal Metallic.

“The 2018 Heavy Duty Longhorn Ram Rodeo Edition is the ultimate combination of capability, refinement and towing content,” said Jim Morrison, Head of Ram Truck Brand, FCA – North America. “Truck buyers at this level expect to see and feel the highest quality materials. The Ram Rodeo brings together the advanced technology and towing content in America’s longest-lasting truck.”

In addition to the diverse selection of exterior colors, the Ram Rodeo 2500/3500 single-rear-wheel models are stocked with 20-inch aluminum wheels with optional painted pockets, while the Ram 3500 dual-rear-wheel models feature 17-inch polished aluminum wheels. In true Ram fashion, the standard trailering equipment checks all the boxes in the work department. The Longhorn Ram Rodeo Edition comes with a fifth-wheel gooseneck trailer prep package and bed-view camera, providing owners a factory solution to view the hitch point for heavy duty trailers during hitching operations. The Longhorn Rodeo Edition also features exclusive rear air suspension technology for expert load leveling for hauling loads or towing trailers.

For the 2018 model year, the Heavy Duty Longhorn Ram Rodeo Edition offers two engine options – a 6.4-liter V8 engine and the 6.7-liter Cummins I6 diesel engine. Available with a crew cab or mega cab, in addition to all of the top-of-the-line features that the Ram Rodeo Edition has to offer, it is also available in 4×2 and 4×4 configurations. Needless to say, the legendary truck brand is highly preferred by ranchers and farmers in the Lone Star State and across the nation.

The Longhorn trim isn’t the only model gaining a special edition. Ram recently revealed its all-new 2018 Ram Harvest Edition Chassis Cab truck which was designed specifically for those who work on a farm or ranch. Additionally, the Ram 2500 Power Wagon also recently debuted its all-new Mojave Sand Option Package. From farming to luxury, Ram is giving us life with all these new enhancements.

Pricing for the 2500 model starts at $60,790 (plus destination fee) and the 3500 model starts at $71,260 (plus destination fee). Both are expected to arrive in dealerships during the third quarter of 2018.
