Back in March 2022, the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance shared new business plans for the next eight years, Alliance 2030. Two years after their mid-plan strategy announcement in May 2020, the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance is fulfilling its promises of connected-car technology system that runs on the Android Operating System, a new E-body core system for electric-electronic architecture, and self-driving technology. According to Alliance 2030, 35 new EV models will be produced by 2030, 24 models will come with intelligent vehicle and driver-assistance technologies for Level 3 and Level 4 autonomy, and a Mitsubishi model may become the first vehicle that’s more software than it is machine. In May 2022, the Alliance announced a new strategy to streamline electric vehicle (EV) development with a new electric vehicle company side project.
According to Nikkei Asia, the Renault automaker CEO, Luca de Meo, confirmed the formation of a new company with alliance partners Nissan Motor and Mitsubishi Motors. Call it a spin off, but like the Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC), where Mitsubishi Electric develops technology for Mitsubishi Motors while supporting its own brand, Renault wants to create an EV unit as an independent company while still a part of the Alliance. Wow, we were just talking about what the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance is up to and the little news that’s come from the Alliance since 2020. Flying under the radar, the Alliance actually shared some big news in February 2022! It seems every major automotive group has one number on its mind – 2030. That’s the new golden year for automakers, the end goal for big plans dealing with electric vehicles (EVs), connected vehicles, and even autonomous vehicles. Alliance 2030 has all that and more, starting with Mitsubishi Motors still playing the leader.

Mitsubishi Motors is still in line to be the first automaker of the Alliance to release a new model in a specific region. Previously leaving the European market, Mitsubishi Motors will attempt to regain its foothold overseas by sharing resources with Renault. Mitsubishi is all set to release two new models based on Renault’s best-selling models, repurposed and redesigned for the Mitsubishi Motors lineup. It’s not just a rebadge, and the next-generation of the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is among them. As the three automakers continue to become more integrated, sharing resources across common platforms and technologies is said to increase to 80-percent by 2026. Okay, seriously, what is Mitsubishi Motors up to? A lot has happened to the automaker since it joined the Renault-Nissan Alliance, and even more so since the now Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance discussed mid-term plans for its five-year business strategy. What was supposed to be a “follow the leader” strategy where Mitsubishi Motors was supposed to be the first automaker of the three to release a brand new model, since then, Mitsubishi pulled out of the race in the European market before Renault agreed to build vehicles for Mitsubishi, and with the next-generation of the Mitsubishi Outlander being the main focus, whatever happened to the new car? The latest reports have been about an Eclipse Cross PHEV taking the spotlight, a Ralliart concept, and a next-generation Outlander Sport.
This may sound like a bad thing, the company and the Alliance doesn’t seem to be making good on its new business plan, but at the same time, Mitsubishi Motors definitely reignited its presence in the auto market with the release of the new generation of the Outlander and the fourth-generation of the Outlander PHEV last year (2021). Shaking up the competition, the new Outlander PHEV could sway consumers from Honda and Toyota when it came to the full-sized, plug-in electric SUV segment. Mitsubishi Motors has been a little rowdy lately. While still no news on the mysterious C-D segment car Mitsubishi was supposedly due to debut as the first new vehicle from the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance, it’s starting to feel like the automaker sort of gave up on that. If anything, the automaker can’t shut up about its next-gen Mitsubishi Outlander SUV, as tired as it is. Mitsubishi even announced an upcoming Eclipse Cross PHEV as the new flagship vehicle of the brand, and not too long ago, was due to leave the European market. Mitsubishi Motors is instead getting a hand from Renault two refresh and rebadge two of their models to give Mitsubishi a stake hold in the market. The latest conference held by the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi debuted the first rebadge, a new generation Outlander Sport.
Face, meet palm.
It’s not a new model, and although the new Ralliart Concept vehicle that debuted during the 2022 Tokyo Auto Salon seemed promising, concepts almost never make it to a prototype. Mitsubishi Motors brought Ralliart back to breathe some life back into the lineup, and for a while, a lot of people were excited about the possible return of the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. After all, Ralliart is the reason the Evolution nameplate ever happened, but the automaker eventually silenced all hope when it announced electric vehicles (EVs) are the major focus. Ralliart will instead be more of an aftermarket accessories store for Mitsubishi owners to purchase performance enhancements and the like, as well as appearance packages. We saw what this could look like, with two examples outfitted with all-terrain tires, bumper protectors, mud guards, a roof carrier, and a trailer hitch.
Set to hit the markets in 2023, the first rebadged model from the French automaker baring a diamond logo is set to replace the Outlander Sport, known as the ASX and RVR overseas. Having had its last generation debut in 2010, with three facelifts since then, it’s time to replace it or overhaul everything. A new platform can help, but we wonder if Mitsubishi will do any changes to the chassis. After all, Mitsubishi Motors’ Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution (RISE) safety body construction is just as much of a staple of the automaker as is their four-wheel drive all-terrain drivetrains, the All-Wheel Control (AWC) and Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC). Based on the conference, it seems the new Outlander Sport will be more than just a rebadge, although still heavily based on a Renault vehicle.
The slight teaser (above) definitely has a “sportier” look. Every automaker goes with the “swept-back” roof these days to increase how sporty a model looks, and aside from the thin and slanted LED headlights, we can’t see much just yet. During the conference, there was a second undisclosed model. Could it be the fabled C-D segment car? Can you really call it a new model if it’s a rebadge and rehash of a model already in the market under another name? This model under the sheets is said to also be a Mitsubishi design based on a Renault model with an electric or plug-in hybrid powertrain. Aside from that, it could be anything. Mitsubishi Motors has been going through a bit of a crisis in 2021. After picking up the pieces of 2020, and the new business strategy for the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance put Mitsubishi at the forefront of which automaker to watch for the next big model of the 21st Century. Since then, all eyes have been on the Japanese automaker with all hopes on the next Lancer or sports car to be produced, especially after the release of the original Starion 4WD concept art. Mitsubishi finally dashed all hopes in late May 2021, when the automaker announced it was putting all of its focus on electric vehicle (EV) development. While it does so, the automaker needs models to put on the market. First, Renault was helping out with a rebadged model to regain footing in the European market, but now, Nissan is also joining the pull.
It’s not a fantastic look for Mitsubishi Motors, let’s be honest. Earlier this year, Mitsubishi decided to pull out of the European market, specifically the UK, before losing more money on developing vehicles with the steering wheel on the right-side of the vehicle (European editions). If anything, Mitsubishi Motors will still be making an appearance in Germany, France, Spain, and Italy – but it might not be a Mitsubishi vehicle at all. At the end of June 2021, Mitsubishi Motors held a shareholders meeting to talk about the future of the company and upcoming models. Even with the power of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance, 2020 hit everyone in the industry hard, and it may have forced Mitsubishi to leave some concepts on the cutting room floor. We’re talking about the Engelberg Tourer and Mi-Tech concepts, originally set to replace the aging Outlander PHEV. Instead, making it clear that the future of the automaker lies within plug-in hybrids and electric vehicle (EV) technology, Mitsubishi chose a new flagship model – the upcoming Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross PHEV. Before it arrives, the newly redesigned 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander is pulling Mitsubishi Motors out of the wreckage.
Redesigned for 2022, the Mitsubishi Outlander comes with a new platform, new design, and new tech to change the way consumers look at this SUV. When the semiconductor chip shortage started to affect the auto industry, many automakers had to choose between temporarily retiring more advanced features and production. Instead of using up resources for a limited production, new consumer incentives and advertising for Mitsubishi Motors increased instead with the money that would usually go towards production. This boosted the profitability of the automaker when the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander came out in April, selling 6,954 units in the second quarter of 2021, double that of 2020.(more…)
There has been a lot of guessing at what Mitsubishi Motors is up to next. After the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance held a virtual press conference in May 2020 to share business strategies for the Alliance going forward, one of the highlights is that the first new model to come from the automotive group will be coming from none other than Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors. A mini electric vehicle designed by Nissan and Mitsubishi was previously launched in Japan, Mitsubishi previewed the AIRTEK at the Shanghai Auto Show, and eventually, Mitsubishi will adopt and rebadge a Renault vehicle to gain a foothold in the European market, already leaving the UK after auctioning off the last Lancer EVO VI Tommi Makinen Edition. Hold that thought, because none of the above is the C-D segment vehicle Mitsubishi has promised us –could it be the new Mitsubishi Lancer?
C-segment vehicles are the 3rd category used for passenger cars, typically described as “medium cars”, but can range between “small family car” and even “compact car” in the states. D-segment vehicles are the 4th category, and although known as “large family cars”, present day D-segment vehicles are known as mid-size and muscle cars. You can feel it, can’t you? Mitsubishi Motors might be breaking away from SUVs – finally – and bringing back what we all want.
Mitsubishi Motors Corp (MMC) has been pretty quiet lately. Pre-Coronavirus, lots of automotive companies were working on new technology and mobility projects to get ready for the next step to take in the automotive industry after alternative fuel vehicles and self-driving autonomous cars. A mobile ecosystem is next on the list, offering every consumer some form of transportation. All of that took a step back when COVID-19 shut down automotive manufacturing plants for months, and the reduction in sales automakers forced many of them to shelve new concepts and tech development and focus on releasing new vehicles. With Renault and Nissan behind Mitsubishi Motors in the Renault-Nissan-Alliance, the sister company, Mitsubishi Electric, is able to stay focused on its tasks – like the construction of possibly the world’s first net zero-energy building (ZEB).
The term a “zero-energy building” should ring a couple of bells. During the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show, Mitsubishi showcased the Dendo Drive House. This house is the residential version of a Building Energy Management System (BEMS). With a focus on consumer use, the Dendo Drive House (DDH) is outfitted with solar panels, converts solar energy into electricity, and then stores it in a battery that can power an entire home. Excess energy can be redirected into a plug-in hybrid to not only charge the vehicle but act as a portable energy unit. A lot of these developments came from the success of a neutral energy project between Mitsubishi Motors, Hitachi Europe Ltd., and ENGIE, the owner of a BEMS in France. Following the same formula as this project, the DDH was born.
We’re finally in June! The middle of 2020 is upon us, and things are starting to look…less grey, that’s a good way to put – less grey. As the sun starts to shine, more good news will come, and little-by-little, industries are starting to beef up again, starting with the auto industry. Last week, the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance held a digital news conference and announced a new strategy for the Alliance, splitting regions and segments three ways. Each automaker will release a new vehicle in one segment in one region, and following its success, the other two automakers will release their own version or a rebadged vehicle on the same platform. The conference also shared news about some technology and vehicles to look forward to.
The Future is Now
With all of the auto shows cancelled for 2020, we’re going to miss out on all of the cool technology that usually pops up. For the last two years, Mitsubishi Motors and Mitsubishi Electric have been blowing it up with plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) and self-driving technology. Even so, the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance has agreed on splitting up the focus of the group in three ways, although there are four core components – PHEVs, electric vehicles (EVs), self-driving cars, and connected car technology.
The last two are technologies still too young to seem practical. Although smart devices like Amazon Alexa and Google Home allow consumers to connect to their phones via their voice, and even their vehicles, adding an Amazon Prime subscription to your car or buying a smart device plugin isn’t at the top of a consumer’s buy list. Instead, the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance partnered with Google to release an Android-based infotainment system.
We’ve all been wondering how the auto industry is going to come back from the global pandemic that was the coronavirus. With the economy struggling to get back up and many auto manufacturers skittish about what the future holds, there are several automakers hitting the ground running. Three of these automakers belong to the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance, and after a recent news conference, we’re now learning about the new plans the Alliance has to bounce back. It all comes down to a new strategy, a type of “Follow the Leader” agenda.
Initially, when Renault-Nissan added Mitsubishi Motors to the Alliance, the plan was to stay the course. The new Alliance would consist of three automotive brands, but each automaker continued to act as a competitor. At the same time, platforms and technologies were to be developed that could be shared across the three automakers, and some vehicles would even be rebadged. After the effects of the Coronavirus thrashing the automotive industry, many automakers are searching for ways to pick up themselves, but Renault, Nissan, and Mitsubishi Motors are leaning into their counterparts for support.
