In recent years, Mitsubishi Motors has been showing off their racing stripes and reigniting its old school years of rally cars. One of the most notable events would be the annual Rebelle Rally, an all-women’s off-road navigational rally raid in the U.S, the Rebelle Rally spans from the slopes of Lake Tahoe, California to the Imperial Dunes of Glamis, east of San Diego – the first of its kind. Mitsubishi competed in the 2019 Rebelle Rally with the Eclipse Cross, the 2020 Rebelle Rally with the Outlander PHEV, and the 2021 Rebelle Rally with the new 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander. Each time, Mitsubishi Motors showed off another one of its models and its capabilities, landing in the winner’s circle. Overseas, a cross country rally is taking place this summer, and Mitsubishi Motors is entering as technical support for Team Mitsubishi Ralliart.

Always the sponsor, and not the driver, Mitsubishi Motors is showing its support for Team Mitsubishi Ralliart, a private team owned by TANT SPORTS in Thailand, led by Hiroshi Masuoka as team director. Masuoka is a two-time Dakar Rally champion driver back in 2002 and 2003. Their vehicle of choice is the automaker’s global strategic model, the Mitsubishi Triton 1-ton pickup truck, an overseas vehicle we’ve been waiting to come stateside. With the pickup truck market showing growth for midsize trucks, it would be a good time to expand the lineup from SUVs. Mitsubishi Motors may not have shown up at the 2022 Consumer Electronics Show – Mitsubishi Electric was the one rocking that stage. Both part of the Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC), whatever tech the latter is working on will eventually find its way into upcoming Mitsubishi models. Speaking of which, we’re all still in the dark about the new vehicle coming from Mitsubishi since the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance broke the silence. We thought it might be a new sports car thanks to the revival of Mitsubishi Ralliart, but Mitsubishi is still focused on electric vehicle (EV) development. Instead, the Ralliart team will be there to spice up already existing models. During the 2022 Tokyo Auto Salon, Mitsubishi Motors showed us a little tease of how the Ralliart name can change the current lineup.
See, way back when, “Ralliart” was the name known for the Lancer Evolution, the still popular vehicle used by rally drag racers everywhere. Making it just an afterthought sounds blasphemous, but adding the same flair onto current models will save resources for whatever the automaker is working on in the background. If anything, the new vehicle teased during the Tokyo Auto Salon, the Mitsubishi Vision Ralliart Concept, could be what we’ve all been waiting for.
The tease is exactly that – a tease. Aside from a huge rear diffuser with a simple Ralliart badge, we can’t see much else. The automaker did chime in to give us a little more information about exterior features, including large brake rotors and six-piston brake calipers for more stopping power, 22-inch wheels with bigger tires, unique front and rear bumpers, wider fenders in the front and rear for more rugged looks, and a new front grille. It’s definitely sounding like a more muscular version of current SUVs in the lineup. With rumors circulating that the concept is built on the Outlander PHEV, that raises some interesting questions. Also during the auto show, Mitsubishi Motors introduced the Outlander SUV in Ralliart Style and an Eclipse Cross in Ralliart Style, and with the Outlander PHEV getting replaced by the Eclipse Cross PHEV as the new electric flagship of Mitsubishi, we know it’s not just another Outlander PHEV. According to the automaker, this concept “embodies Mitsubishi Motors’ vision for the new Ralliart”.
The Outlander Ralliart Style and Eclipse Cross Ralliart Style didn’t look too different in comparison to their counterparts, aside from red accents with new white/black badges. They’re most likely previews of Ralliart appearance packages that will become available during or after production. If Ralliart is going to do more than style and focus on aftermarket accessories, the Outlander Wild Adventure Style based on the PHEV was a great example. Outfitted with all-terrain tires, bumper protectors, mud guards, a roof carrier, trailer hitch, and more, this SUV is not only nature-friendly, but it’s made for the outdoors.
Other vehicles that popped up have been popular overseas but have yet to make it to the states, and probably never might. One is a new Mitsubishi Delica and the new generation of the EV minicar in Japan, known as “kei cars”. Able to be used as a commercial vehicle (electric taxi) or a personal vehicle, it’s interesting that Mitsubishi Motors hasn’t used it to expand the North American lineup.2021 was all about the Mitsubishi Outlander. Maybe 2022 will finally give us the new Mitsubishi vehicle we’ve been waiting on for the last two years. It would seem that rally and race car fans have absolutely gone haywire in their efforts to show Mitsubishi Motors just how much their discontinued retail rally cars are missed and how much we want them back. It all started when the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance announced the Japanese automaker as the first of the three to launch a new vehicle, somewhere in the C- or D-car segment. This got people asking about the once beloved Lancer Evolution, but what really lit the match was the recent auctioning of the last Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution Tommi Makinen Edition in Europe and the release of never-before-seen concept art of the Mitsubishi Starion 4WD. This was a vehicle made by the one and only Ralliart, the high-performance team of Mitsubishi Motors recently taken out of retirement. People have been modifying the Mitsubishi Lancer and Lancer Evolution for more power in drag races, and a modified Lancer EVO IX in Europe is currently turning heads with its 706 horsepower.
Anything past 700 horsepower is a pretty crazy number for a standard vehicle, but the Lancer EVO IX is no passenger car, although it comes with four doors. This is a sports car, and it means business. We’ve talked about the Lancer EVO before, its high-performance and response that gives drivers a lot of control over a lot of power. Even at the sharpest of turns, the Lancer EVO could handle it no problem. Our last discussion was focused on the Lancer EVO VIII (eight-generation), with a video of TopGear with the Mitsubishi EVO racing a Lamborghini.
At one time, Mitsubishi Motors was known for its rally cars. The first vehicle by the Japanese automaker entered into an international motorsports event set a track record – it was the Mitsubishi 500 Super Deluxe. The automaker would go on to soon be known as a legend, when a favorite model of consumers everywhere, won the World Rally Championship (WRC) for four years running. It was the Lancer Evolution Tommi Makinen Edition, and the last of which was recently auctioned off in Europe. Now, never before seen pictures of the last sports car coupe to come from Mitsubishi Motors are seeing light – the Starion 4WD.
As mentioned, the Starion 4WD never saw the light of day. Part of a collective called “Group B rally”, rally cars in this group were some of the fastest, most powerful, and most sophisticated rally cars manufactured. Some would go so far as to call it the golden era of rallying. However, due to some fatal events, including the death of late Champion Henri Toivonen and co-pilot Sergio Cresto during the Tour de Corse rally in 1986, Group B cars were banned from racing.
When the 2018 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross was first revealed, there was a lot of backlash. Totally understandable, really. Mitsubishi Motors has pulled many of its sports cars out of the U.S., the Mitsubishi Eclipse amongst them, along with the Lancer and Lancer Evolution series. Some of the latter are still legends today. Teasing the revival of a rally car, only to reveal a crossover, was like salt on the wound, and the circulating artwork of a Lancer crossover isn’t helping. Talk of Mitsubishi Motors Corp (MMC) reviving Ralliart was reported recently by Forbes, and it feels like a rollercoaster all over again.
We can’t help but wonder if this comes from the recent auction for the last Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution Tommi Makinen Edition, sold in Europe for £100,100, or $121,000 USD. Mitsubishi Motors standing in Europe is currently confusing. The automaker is making its departure from the UK market, while simultaneously starting 2023 with two models produced by Groupe Renault but rebranded and restyled for Mitsubishi Motors. Only being released in selected markets in Europe, perhaps the automaker is looking for a cornerstone. After all, the press release from the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance was only two months ago (March 2021).
