With half of 2021 already over, automakers are gearing up for the 2022 model year, already releasing new models and updated features. Mitsubishi Motors had us all in the dark for a while there, but after a shareholder meeting in late June 2021, Mitsubishi discussed its future plans in electric vehicle development. Recently this year, the automaker released the all-new redesigned 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander SUV, bringing its sales up and growing the brand’s popularity. The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, skipping a year, has also been revamped for 2022, but the 2020 model had enough spunk to win an award from AutoPacific during the 2021 AutoPacific Vehicle Satisfaction Awards.
Mitsubishi Motors has been going through some changes over the last few years, with talk of a new vehicle soon to replace the aging Outlander PHEV, the automaker’s popular plug-in hybrid SUV. Recently, Mitsubishi announced that a new model will not only replace the Outlander PHEV but will also replace the Mitsubishi Outlander as the flagship of the brand. The new face of Mitsubishi Motors will be an Eclipse Cross plug-in hybrid crossover. The new award from AutoPacific is just another plus for the automaker and the sporty crossover model.
AutoPacific is a trusted name by many automakers, known for its future-oriented automotive marketing research, AutoPacific tends to consult many automotive brands. Consumers also trust AutoPacific to provide them with up-to-date information on the latest and newest vehicles in the market. When looking for a new vehicle, consumers look for reviews to help guide them, and “Best of” lists and awards help highlight the best of the best. The 2021 AutoPacific Vehicle Satisfaction Awards measures owner satisfaction across 36 individual vehicle attributes, covering traits such as driving performance, features, usability, seating comfort, and interior design. Mitsubishi scored at the top of the compact crossover SUV segment, earning higher marks in 32 of the 36 measured attributes. AutoPacific praised the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross for its safety features and its success over competing models, the Jeep Compass, Hyundai Tucson, and Subaru Crosstrek.

The 2021 AutoPacific Vehicle Satisfaction Awards has been going on for 25 years, and now that Mitsubishi Motors is changing things up, starting with a new look for its 2022 lineup, winning this award is a great way to start. Also praised by AutoPacific, the available 2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is already doing well, having received a 5-Star Overall Safety Rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). It’s been some time since we heard any developments from the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance. Almost a year ago, the Alliance held a digital press conference to discuss new plans and business strategies going forward. Always set to be a mutually beneficial but also competitive relationship, each automaker has something to gain, and resources and tech are expected to be shared between them for future and upcoming concepts. A new interesting development, separate from the plans set forth during the press release, is the adaptation of two Renault models for the Mitsubishi Motors lineup in Europe.
During the 2020 press release, the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance had a simple plan. One automaker would release a vehicle in a market region, and if its sales were good, the other automakers would do the same in their respective market regions before crossing over and creating competition. Mitsubishi Motors picked the short straw and will be the first automaker to release a new vehicle, but no matter what it is, the vehicle will probably only be sold overseas. At the moment, there are two great contenders – the Mitsubishi and Nissan micro EV minicar project, or the Mitsubishi Airtek concept teased during the 2021 Shanghai Auto Show.
There isn’t much information on either of the above vehicles, only that one will be sold in Japan, one in China, and neither in North America. This gives us some hope that with the adaptation of two Renault vehicles for European sales, perhaps Mitsubishi will also bring the vehicles stateside. After all, Renault hasn’t been selling in the U.S. since 1992 after Chrysler bought their American partner, AMC. Their market share today wouldn’t be sufficient to enter the U.S., but Mitsubishi Motors already has a strong foothold on North American soil.

Within the next two years, Mitsubishi will adopt and adapt two models currently produced by Groupe Renault. These aren’t new vehicles and aren’t a part of the new business strategy to test one vehicle in one region. The Alliance has yet to reveal the models that Mitsubishi will rebadge, but one can assume the Renault Clio is on the list. The best-selling vehicle in its segment and the second-best selling in all of Europe, this supermini car has sold 227,079 units in Europe. When rebadged by Mitsubishi Motors, they will also be redesigned to follow the brand’s DNA and new styling, such as the new Dynamic Shield built into the front fascia.
This is just the beginning of cross-platform sharing amongst the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance. That mini electric vehicle being sold in Japan is a joint-venture between Mitsubishi and Nissan, possibly built off the new EV platform Nissan developed last year. Heck, the Mitsubishi Outlander is powered by an engine from Nissan. All these new parts from Renault and Nissan, it’s all very reminiscent of the “Six Million Dollar Man”. In a year where a lot has been left up to chance and preparation, consumers will always want something reliable. Some of us just have a curse where any piece of technology fails them and doesn’t work as intended, but we’re talking about cars today, not mobile phones and computers. If there is one thing a consumer can rely on is their cars. Getting them from point A to point B without much trouble along the way aside from traffic and people who think being in a car makes them virtually untouchable. Well, there is one vehicle that many may not expect, but is a valuable car nonetheless. It’s the very fuel-efficient Mitsubishi Mirage, and one couple drove it over 400,000 miles before trading it in – not that they had to.
According to Vincentric, a publication that highlights vehicles that hold the most value after years of ownership by comparing the total cost-of-ownership of a vehicle and its current market price. With a focus on purchase price, retained value, fixed and operating costs, and maintenance and repair costs, the lifetime cost of a vehicle could be worse than buying a new one altogether. This story isn’t true for the Mitsubishi Mirage. In 2019, Vincentric honored the 2020 Mitsubishi Mirage with the 2020 Vincentric Best CPO Value in America award. Plus, Mitsubishi Motors gives consumers long-lasting warranties to keep vehicles in shape, for free, keeping the value high.
Over the summer, Mitsubishi Motors revealed its upcoming lineup for the 2021 model year. They’re all the same classics Mitsubishi is known for, with no sight of the C/D segment vehicle teased during the discussion of the mid-term plans for the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance. Some of us are hoping for a smaller vehicle, being that a C/D segment car could be anything from a subcompact to another large vehicle. With the Lancer teased as a crossover, we’re not sure which way it could go, but we’re hoping if Mitsubishi brings back the Lancer, it doesn’t pull an Eclipse Cross and instead returns it to its former glory. Hate to say it though, but with high-performance automakers pulling out of the race to make the switch to alternative fuel, is a Lancer sports car in the cards? The Mitsubishi Lancer EVO is still a powerful sports car.
The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution died out several years ago, discontinued and sold out. Owners who were lucky to purchase a Lancer EVO before it was chucked either love the EVO because of the ride it offers or love it because they love to race. Looking at the Mitsubishi Motors a lineup now, no one would guess that Mitsubishi is capable of a sports car, with only SUVs in the cards. However, that’s Mitsubishi Motors NORTH AMERICA. Overseas, it’s a different story.
Mitsubishi Motors North America (MMNA) started an interesting corporate social responsibility initiative called “Small Batch – Big Impact” in 2019. Aimed at giving back to the community, the automaker produced a small number of units of each model in its lineup – the small batch – but each vehicle produced was used for the greater good, to help the community and non-profit organizations help fulfill their goals – the big impact. Amongst helping charities like the Goodie Two Shoes Foundation, or with disaster relief in Tennessee, Mitsubishi Motors also partnered with a non-profit organization dedicated to helping military veterans adjust to civilian life through the use of outdoor photography adventures to ease hurtful military experiences, including combat, injury, and loss. Known as the first all-women’s off-road navigational rally raid in the U.S, the Rebelle Rally spans from the slopes of Lake Tahoe, California to the Imperial Dunes of Glamis, east of San Diego. It’s the longest event of its kind in the lower 48 states, making up a total 10-day, 2,000 km navigational course. Competition is always fierce, and this year has introduced a new category of winners. In addition to the 4×4 and Crossover class, Rebelle Rally added a category for hybrids and plug-in hybrids to highlight the highest-finishing battery-powered electric vehicle (BEV) and hybrid or plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) in each car segment.
Just last week, Mitsubishi Motors North America (MMNA) released a teaser for the new 2021 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross. With very little to go on, we’re not yet sure how much the crossover has changed in appearance, inside and out. We do, however, expect some good technology upgrades. Always getting the best Mitsubishi has to offer, the Eclipse Cross was one of the first vehicles to get a smartphone link display, Mitsubishi Motors ventured into infotainment systems and more interactive touchscreens with smartphone interfaces. Keeping connected with its consumers, Mitsubishi is one of many automakers developing smartphone apps to help keep consumers safe and keep their vehicles in great shape. The latest app from MMNA is the My MITSUBISHI CONNECT.
Right now, it’s not very flashy, but Mitsubishi Motors is the kind of automaker that works on multiple little things and then bring it all together into one big thing. My MITSUBISHI CONNECT is just a small piece of an even bigger puzzle. Right now, the mobile app has one main focus – help consumers make automotive maintenance easier. It sounds simple, right? But think about it – how many times have you realized you forgot to get an oil change because you couldn’t be bothered to take your car in for maintenance?
The auto industry has hit many hardships this year with the COVID-19 pandemic shutting down manufacturing plants and causing many financial losses. In late May 2020, the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance announced mid-term plans for the future development of the alliance and automotive vehicles going forward. Things were looking up, Mitsubishi Motors was the first automaker set to enter the market with a new vehicle, and a lot of interesting technology was on the rise. As the saying goes, open a window, close a door, and Mitsubishi Motors recently lost a strong member of the team at the end of August with the passing of former CEO Osamu Masuko.
What a huge loss for the automaker. Having joined Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) in 2005, Masuko spent 16 years at Mitsubishi, rebuilding the brand and bringing it back from the brink of collapse time and again. A company with hardship needs a strong leader, and Masuko was the man for the job. According to the company, the many achievements of the automaker today are thanks to his management skills that helped the company overcome many difficulties.
It feels like a long time ago that the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance was formed, and just this year, the automotive group got back in the spotlight when announcing the mid-term plans for the Alliance going forward. A new strategy, with the Coronavirus pandemic causing a lot of hardship for many industries and markets, automakers are quick to find a way to bounce back. To do that, they need to focus on the auto markets that show them the most love, and for some reason, North America isn’t one of them. Recently, the Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) its own set of mid-term plans for the next three years, and it would seem that this is only solidifying the plan.
When we first learned of the midterm plans for the Alliance, it all sounded pretty good. If anything, the three automakers seemed to be blending together more, sharing technology, body platforms, and even whole vehicles. To keep competition between the three automakers going strong, instead of releasing the same vehicle in every region, the automakers will release a new vehicle, one-by-one, in a region that works best for them. For Mitsubishi, that’s the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). However, this doesn’t mean Mitsubishi Motors will have full control over the ASEAN region, but more so, it will be the first automaker to release a new vehicle in that region, and it’s successful, Renault and Nissan will release something similar in their regions before releasing something for the ASEAN.
The Alliance called it a “Follow-the-Leader” strategy where one automaker rolled the dice, and if successful, the other automakers would follow suit. That brings us to the upcoming model from Mitsubishi Motors, set to be a part of the C/D car segment, so either a subcompact car or a large vehicle – not many details at this point, but we probably don’t need to get our hopes up. Recently, Mitsubishi Motors announced its own plans for bouncing back after the Coronavirus, and it seems the automaker is focused on saving itself while chasing after new tech.
We can’t really blame Mitsubishi for pulling on the reins a bit. It’s time to rebuild. However, we don’t think anyone expected something as drastic as placing a freeze on the sale of new models, starting with Europe. Called the “Small but Beautiful” plan, the MMC will be concentrating its resources on the ASEAN region where it is most competitive, while further enhancing unique and competitive automotive technologies, for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), electric vehicles (EVs), and even hydrogen-powered vehicles (HEVs). Mitsubishi FUSO Mitsubishi FUSO Truck and Bus Corp. have already started on the production of hydrogen fuel cell-powered trucks, but we won’t see it until closer to 2030.
This may not sound great for the North American market, but we’re not really missing anything at the moment. Aside from the Mitsubishi pickup truck that’s been doing really well in other markets, the next vehicle on the list for release aside from the mystery C/D car is the next generation of the Mitsubishi Xpander MPV and Xpander Cross SUV – one is a multi-purpose vehicle (just a fancy word for a minivan) and the other if a crossover/SUV? The minivan segment is all but dead in America, and the market is already oversaturated with SUVs and crossovers. We only hope the new technologies to come from Mitsubishi will find their way to the states, as there were some pretty neat concepts last year, like the Mitsubishi Engelberg Tourer PHEV and Mi-Tech Powertrain.

There is a lot going on for Mitsubishi Motors after the new strategy for the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance was announced. Sounds like Mitsubishi already has a new vehicle set to come out for the C/D segment, of which could mean we could be getting anything from a subcompact to a large car. A lot is still up for guessing, but there is one thing we won’t have to guess – when the new lineup from Mitsubishi Motors will arrive on dealership lots. Starting in the fall of 2020, the revised, refreshed, and new-generation models from the Mitsubishi lineup will make their way to U.S. soil.
Recently, Mitsubishi Motors ranked high in the 2020 J.D. Power Initial Quality Study (IQS), with its famous 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport coming in third place for the Small SUV car segment. Upgraded with new standard levels of equipment, the Outlander Sport continues to improve. The J.D. Power IQS ranks vehicles based on how well they keep their initial quality over 90 days of ownership. Data is collected by surveys sent out to owners of these vehicles, ultimately ranking each on a Problems-Per-100 units scale, or how many problems one would find in 100 vehicles by that automaker. With a score of 148 PP100, Mitsubishi Motors became the top-rated Japanese brand for 2020.
If you didn’t know it, the world’s best-selling plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) is the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, and the 2021 Outlander PHEV model will be making its way to dealerships in winter 2020. With a new powertrain, an updated internal combustion engine is coupled with a larger and more refined electric drive system. Together, the Outlander PHEV generates more horsepower and offers an increase when driving on electricity alone with a longer all-electric range.
