New EV Minicar from Mitsubishi Motors

Alternative fuel vehicles are starting to grow in popularity. We’re not saying hybrid cars, plug-ins, and electric vehicles (EVs) are going to become the norm – no one is saying that. Then again, SUVs were pretty impractical 20 years ago when all they were known for was towing, cargo space, and able to handle varying types of terrain (unless you’re accounting for its high center of gravity). So, if over two decades, these large vehicles could eventually give rise to crossovers and eventually evolve into vehicles that can do all of the above and still offer some decent fuel economy numbers, perhaps a world of EVs isn’t too far off. With many automakers already diving in at full-speed, Mitsubishi Motors is wading into the shallow end with a new platform from Nissan.

In case anyone forgot or was unaware, Mitsubishi and Nissan are tag-teaming the auto industry with their buddy Renault. Known as the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance, back in May of 2020, this automotive group held a digital press conference to review its five (or six) year business plan – Alliance 2022. With lots of investments made with the Alliance Ventures plan, and COVID-19 putting all kinds of investments in a stranglehold, a new business strategy needed to come together.

The Alliance calls it a “Follow-the-Leader” pattern – or strategy. Each automaker within the group is meant to share technology and work together to produce great vehicles en masse, but each automaker will also be in competition with the other. What this means is, at first, each automaker has its own region to set up shop, and one of those automakers will release a new vehicle in its respective region. If sales go well, the other automakers follow suit in a rebadged version in their respective regions before cross-selling into the regions of the other parties in the Alliance.

That brings us to the latest announcement from Nissan and Mitsubishi Motors. Remember that new cross-brand EV platform Nissan was working on? Shared between Nissan, Renault, and Mitsubishi Motors, able to change based on the size, style, and whatever use the automaker would like to gear it towards. This platform could even work on, say, a minicar? If we were to shake a magic 8-ball right about now, then “All signs are pointing to yes.”

Nissan and Mitsubishi Motors recently announced a new electric minicar heading to the Japan auto market. With release possibly this year, going for less than 2 million yen ($18,400), the vehicle is bound to be a hit overseas. Known as “kei cars” in Japan, this type of vehicle makes up 40-percent of all sales in the country. Able to provide over 124 miles (200 km) of range, this Mitsubishi minicar should already prove some healthy competition for the handful of electric minicars set to hit the Japanese market within the next year.

Will this vehicle also come stateside? Well that depends on how well it does in Japan, but if anyone remembers the Mitsubishi i-MiEV, things didn’t bode well for the electric mini in the U.S., only lasting a short while. With the new EV platform from Nissan and a boost from Renault, this new electric minicar might just have a chance, and with the new “Follow-the-Leader” business strategy, if this minicar does do well in Japan, we’re bound to see it in other regions, including North America.

What do you think of an electric minicar? Several automakers see it as the new wave after the pandemic changed the world view on vehicles and how many people should really be in a tight space, such as a not-so-well ventilated automobile? Is the Mitsubishi Outlander Setting the Stage For a Transition to EVs

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, or plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, has been very successful overseas, and has had some success stateside as well. Recently entered into the 2020 Rebelle Rally, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV will be making history with the first year the Rally set up a round for hybrid and electric vehicles to recognize and honor the highest-finishing battery-powered electric vehicle (BEV) and hybrid or plug-in hybrid electric vehicle in each car segment. Some automotive publications call PHEVs the perfect transition vehicle for going electric, and with such success behind the Outlander PHEV, many wonder if Mitsubishi will return to all-electric vehicles one day.

According to a recent survey conducted by Kadence International in the United Kingdom (UK), 1,035 Mitsubishi drivers agree that a plug-in hybrid has changed their mind about vehicles that need to occasionally recharge, and are a great midway point to purchasing an all-electric vehicle. The total group was made up of three categories, with 48-percent of Outlander PHEV drivers who considered the PHEV to be an electric vehicle (EV), 9-percent of ICE drivers considering making the switch to an all-electric vehicle. 23-percent of drivers considered a PHEV, but the main concern isn’t actually needing to recharge – it’s driving range.

Watch the Super Wolf Blood Moon with the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross

Miami Lakes Mitsubishi Super Wolf Blood Moon

A special celestial event is starting off 2019. It’s the first lunar eclipse of the year, but a few different spectacles will be taking place that make this lunar eclipse so rare. Known as the “Super Wolf Blood Moon”, everyone in North America will get a chance to see it. So early in 2019, and South Florida is experiencing some strange weather – what a cold front. If looking to catch the lunar eclipse while keeping warm, check out a vehicle with a moonroof, or a dual-pane sunroof like that on the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross.

Watch the Lunar Eclipse from the Eclipse

Although the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross moniker may seem like a coincidence, the Eclipse Cross actually came out during 2017. Being the last in-house vehicle from Mitsubishi Motors, they capitalized on a celestial event happening that same year, “The Great American Eclipse”. They also developed a marketing campaign based around the eclipse. The Great American Eclipse was a solar eclipse where the time spent in totality, when the sun is completely blocked out by the moon and the Earth is cast in shadow, spanned across the entire country of the U.S.

Because the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is the last in-house vehicle, this model comes with some special features. Not only is the Eclipse Cross the first model to get Mitsubishi Connect, the automaker’s first infotainment system, but also a dual-pane power panoramic sunroof, another first for the lineup. With heated seats (standard for the front row in the SEL trim, along with the sunroof) What a perfect way to watch the Super Wolf Blood Moon event.

Mitsubishi Making Changes to the Lineup

Miami Lakes Auto Mitsubishi- Lineup

With Mitsubishi making a lot of changes and bringing new vehicles to their lineup since the Mitsubishi and Nissan-Renault partnership started, there’s a lot of talk of what’s to come. Mitsubishi is leaning towards crossovers and SUVs these days, and recently they discontinued the all-electric i-Miev. But with the expansion of Mitsubishi Motors across the world and in the auto market, there are some changes we can see happening to the current lineup. Especially with the sharing of components between Mitsubishi and Nissan.

Sedans

The Mitsubishi Mirage and Mirage G4 are cornerstones for Mitsubishi Motors, known for their high fuel economy and sporty looks. The former comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but both models will most likely have it in the next model-year. For 2019, both models will be re-engineered and have a new powertrain option. Mitsubishi has always had low-power engines though, so we won’t see anything too grand – a 1.1-liter turbocharged engine is the current pick.

New Technology Found on the 2018 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross

Although there has yet to be an official release date for the 2018 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, more information is released about it every so often. When we first heard about this throwback, there were a lot of people wondering if Mitsubishi Motors had lost it. Turning a once sports car into a crossover variation had a 50/50 shot at success. However, with the lineup cutting down on small cars and shifting with the auto industry into a more SUV and crossover market, it’s possible they can pull it off.

Jump forward to the Geneva International Motor Show when the 2018 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross debuted. We talked a lot about its aesthetics, the style, and new technology popping up (literally and figuratively). Recently, Mitsubishi Motors released a video teasing the technology found in the Eclipse Cross, and it’s shaping up nicely. Perfect timing too, because we just covered the lack of a true Mitsubishi infotainment system not too long ago.

Mitsubishi and the Model A PHEV

Miami Lakes Mitsubishi Model A PHEV

“This is how we do it, this is how we do it!” Man, that song is old, but not as old as the 1917 Mitsubishi Model A. After 100 years of production and becoming a globally-known automotive company, Mitsubishi Motors is going to do something different to celebrate. They’re gonna bring back the Mitsubishi Model A, the first automobile they ever produced, and smack it onto the Outlander PHEV platform with all-new tech, but the same old look.

Yeah, you heard right. The Outlander PHEV, having never seen the shores of the states, will be sharing its powertrain with the new Mitsubishi Model A PHEV. We’re finally going to get to test out a Mitsubishi PHEV automobile for ourselves. Not only that, but it will be in a completely different vehicle. The Mitsubishi Model A may look a little dated, but that’s why Mitsubishi Motors North America has struck a deal with West Coast Customs to redefine the 100 year old automobile.

Mitsubishi 2017 Warranty Details

Miami Lakes Mitsubishi Warranty Details 2017

Mitsubishi has been leading the auto industry with their warranty coverage for quite some time. Having a warranty on one’s vehicle is important, it helps to save some cash when a repair or replacement part is needed. However, warranties always feel like they’re designed to last up until a component’s breaking point. With Mitsubishi Motors, warranties last a lot longer and cover a whole lot of car parts.

2017 Model-Year Mitsubishi Warranties

Mitsubishi has several warranties that cover all of its vehicles. Each one begins the date an owner officially owns a vehicle (buy or lease).

New Vehicle Limited Warranty

Most basic limited warranties offered by manufacturers cover a car for three years or 36,000 miles, but Mitsubishi extends their basic limited warranty for five years or 60,000 miles.

The basic warranty covers vehicle parts supplied by Mitsubishi Motors North America, excluding the batteries and the restraint system. If the battery needs to be replaced within two years of ownership, it can be replaced for free. If the battery needs to be replaced between two and three years of ownership, Mitsubishi will replace the battery at half price.

How the Mitsubishi Outlander Might Surprise You

Mitsubishi Motors has had its ups and downs and recently they partnered up with Nissan. However, the two companies have clearly stated they’re still in competition with one another, so it’s clear that Mitsubishi is going to stay strong.  Currently, Mitsubishi is celebrating their 100-year anniversary and their strongest vehicle is the official face of Mitsubishi – the Mitsubishi Outlander.

Yep, it’s been 100 years. The first Mitsubishi Model-A was put into mass-production in Japan in 1917. When the company launched the Outlander in 2001, Mitsubishi didn’t just want the Outlander to blend in with their other models, so they made it the face of Mitsubishi  Motors. If you go to mitsubishicars.com, the first slide you’ll see is the announcement of their anniversary with the Model-A and the Outlander side-by-side. Not only that, but with the recent shut down of the Lancer, Mitsubishi has decided to focus on its SUVs and crossovers, like the 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander and 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport.

So aside from being the new face of Mitsubishi, what are some other things the Outlander has going for it? How about its ability to live up to its name “Sports Utility Vehicle”? One would think it has a lot of cargo space, right?

It’s always a smart move to be diverse and not put all your eggs in one basket. Everyone does it one way or another, and for a business to be successful, this is a smart practice. Mitsubishi knows this, and they’re actually doing a lot more than just manufacturing cars. Some of the companies Mitsubishi is involved with might surprise you.

Technology

Technology evolves fast; less than 30 years ago the internet wasn’t even a thing! Now we have smartphones and internet access almost anywhere, even in space (seriously, Google it). Did you know Mitsubishi has their hands in some popular tech pockets?

Nikon, the camera company, is a member of the Mitsubishi group of companies. Surprising right? No one could guess by the name alone, but it’s part of the Mitsubishi business group, including its camera equipment and glass.

Space – the Final Frontier. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries is involved in more than just SUVs. These guys send satellites into space and even work with ISS support to provide technical feedback and aid.
