Is the Mitsubishi Outlander Setting the Stage For a Transition to EVs

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, or plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, has been very successful overseas, and has had some success stateside as well. Recently entered into the 2020 Rebelle Rally, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV will be making history with the first year the Rally set up a round for hybrid and electric vehicles to recognize and honor the highest-finishing battery-powered electric vehicle (BEV) and hybrid or plug-in hybrid electric vehicle in each car segment. Some automotive publications call PHEVs the perfect transition vehicle for going electric, and with such success behind the Outlander PHEV, many wonder if Mitsubishi will return to all-electric vehicles one day.

According to a recent survey conducted by Kadence International in the United Kingdom (UK), 1,035 Mitsubishi drivers agree that a plug-in hybrid has changed their mind about vehicles that need to occasionally recharge, and are a great midway point to purchasing an all-electric vehicle. The total group was made up of three categories, with 48-percent of Outlander PHEV drivers who considered the PHEV to be an electric vehicle (EV), 9-percent of ICE drivers considering making the switch to an all-electric vehicle. 23-percent of drivers considered a PHEV, but the main concern isn’t actually needing to recharge – it’s driving range.

A Review of Alternative Fuel Vehicles from Mitsubishi

Because automakers all around the world have paused production during the COVID-19 pandemic, we thought it would be a good time to review some of the interesting moves automakers have made in the industry up to this point. One automaker that has kept us guessing it Mitsubishi Motors. With their sister company Mitsubishi Electric always unveiling some futuristic technology for upcoming vehicles, we wonder how advanced the next concept will be. We’ve also seen a variety of alternative fuel vehicles from Mitsubishi, with the latest MI-TECH Concept at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show a real change in design. How did Mitsubishi Motors get here?

Older Models

Possibly the first dip into alternative fuel vehicles for Mitsubishi Motors was the Mitsubishi i-MiEV. An all-electric vehicle, this was a steppingstone for Mitsubishi Motors, having produced the first highway-capable electric vehicle (EV). Not only that, but the i-MiEV won awards for its value, a gem for EVs at the time, able to drive 59 miles on a single charge with no emissions. Several systems were also on board to increase range, such as a regenerative braking system and an on-board battery charging system. The i-MiEV didn’t last for long in the U.S. however, and Mitsubishi decided to bring a different alternative fuel vehicle stateside.

Although the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV had already seen its fair share of years overseas, the plug-in hybrid SUV has only been in the states for a few years. Another winner of awards, the Outlander PHEV was up to the same level of quality of most plug-in hybrids of the time. With an EPA estimated 74 MPGe and the ability to travel 22 miles emissions-free on electricity, the Outlander PHEV was a step in a new direction, with two electric motors making up the powertrain, one on each axle.

Newer Concepts

Mitsubishi Motors has been actively debuting new concepts for the past two years. Auto shows have been cancelled indefinitely for 2020 during the Coronavirus pandemic, but in 2019, Mitsubishi Motors wowed us with the Engelberg Tourer SUV concept at the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show, and again at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show with their new MI-TECH concept. The former, a plug-in hybrid SUV, is meant to replace the aging Outlander PHEV, giving it a more robust and adventurous look, and is shaping up to be an SUV consumers could take to the racetrack with Mitsubishi Motors Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) system.

Going further, Mitsubishi Motors changed the way we look at plug-in hybrid electric vehicles at the Tokyo Motor Show. Mi-TECH, unveiled in an electric buggy, is not your usual gasoline engine/electric motor setup. Doubling down on the design of the original Outlander PHEV, the Mitsubishi Mi-TECH concept comes with four electric motors, one for each wheel, but changes things up by replacing the standard gasoline internal combustion engine with a gas turbine generator. Although output has yet to be released, we can only imagine a turbine generator would be more powerful than an automotive engine. Time will tell.

Mitsubishi Motors Aims to Change Our Views of Plug-in Hybrids Once Again

When it comes to alternative fuel vehicles, there was once a lot of confusion and misunderstanding about electric motors and their place in the auto industry. Electric motors? How could that compete with the full throttle high-performance horsepower of an octane-burning internal combustion engine? Is there an electric motor out there able to produce horsepower in the high triple digits? Maybe, but when it comes to electric motors, where they really shine is torque. As we all know, torque is what turns the wheels, and torque can also be used to offer the driver better control over a vehicle. Automaker Mitsubishi Motors saw this as an opportunity to work on a new concept coming to the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show – Mi-Tech.

What is Mi-Tech?

A lot of information is still being saved for the Tokyo Motor Show, this October 23, 2019, but Mitsubishi press continues to give little bits of information. At first, all we knew was the automaker planned to introduce a new electric SUV concept at the auto show – but why so soon after the debut of the Mitsubishi Engelberg Tourer at the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show? Remember that interesting concept? The Engelberg Tourer was introduced as the next plug-in hybrid SUV that may one day replace the aging Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV.

It may not seem like the Outlander plug-in hybrid SUV is very old, having just been introduced to U.S. soil a few years ago, but the Outlander PHEV has had a long run on a global scale. Recently, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV hit a milestone of 200,000 units sold, and the 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is getting some upgrades in its golden years. For those that like to drive in luxury, consumers will find most of the upgrades available to the high-end trims in the lineup, the SEL and GT trims. Both come equipped with a new second-generation Smartphone-link Display Audio system for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, and the GT trim also comes with a new Mitsubishi Power Sound System that is replacing the Rockford-Fosgate audio system on previous models going forward.

Mitsubishi Breaking into Multiple Markets

With the midsize truck getting its second wind with the recent release of the 2020 Jeep Gladiator, times sure have changed. At the better first half of the decade, midsize trucks nearly died off, known for having the same fuel economy and safety issues of the already popular SUV. America didn’t need another shaky gas guzzler, and most automakers moved onto other pastures. Some automakers focused on other global markets, with Mitsubishi Motors being one of them. Their 2019 Triton pickup truck debuted back in 2018, but there are only hints of it entering the U.S. Market with everything else the automaker is wrapped up in.

Mitsubishi North America Chief Operating Officer Mark Chaffin recently spoke in an interview about entering the U.S. market. As it stands, although the new Mitsubishi Triton is right up there in standards with other trucks in the states, the market is also becoming very competitive. The Japanese automaker would need to have a truck that’s not only right for the automaker but also their demographic in the market. Take a look at the 2019 Mitsubishi Triton pickup truck, also known as the L200 and Strada in other global markets.

 

Like all of the vehicles in the Mitsubishi lineup, the Triton follows the look set forth by the Mitsubishi Outlander with a dynamic shield across the front fascia. Brought into the modern age, the truck also sports advanced safety features currently popping up in new Mitsubishi Motors, such as Forward Collision Mitigation system, Blind Spot Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, and an Ultrasonic Misacceleration Mitigation System. Designed to be off-road capable, the Mitsubishi Triton is equipped with an enhanced four-wheel drive (4WD) system and two off-road systems, “Super-Select 4WD” and “Easy-Select 4WD”. Both come with various modes to handle a variety of terrain and driving conditions, including gravel, mud/snow, and sand 4WD-high and -low mode, and rock only in 4WD-low mode.

Because the market is so competitive and took a major hit before all the upgrades, Mitsubishi Motors may be more focused on its cooperation with the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance. Word has it that Mitsubishi Motors is currently overseeing the development of a new next-generation midsize truck body-on-frame platform. With the intention of developing cross-brand platforms, the new platform will be shared with a number of vehicles, such as the Renault Alaskan and the Nissan Navara. Moreover, the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance is heavily invested in other areas.

In conjunction with their Alliance 2022 Five/Six-year plan, the Alliance also put together a $1 billion fundraising campaign to help grow startups and entrepreneurs in technology for robotaxis, car sharing, EV batteries, and EV charging. Self-driving autonomous vehicles is one area Mitsubishi Motors has been making some noise in, with the concepts Mitsubishi Electric showed at the 2019 Consumer Electronics Show. Again, at the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show, Mitsubishi showed us what the Motor company is working on, with the Mitsubishi Engelberg Tourer concept and the Dendo Drive House.

Mitsubishi Motors isn’t just focused on its automotive products. With investments in car-sharing services and researching new and better ways to produce lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles, the automaker has hands in many pockets. The U.S. truck market may not be in the mix just yet, maybe by 2025 according to LMC Automotive. Either way, we still have a few more years before Alliance 2022 comes to an end and makes room for other projects.

Mitsubishi brought their A-game to the 2018 LA Auto Show as they debuted an impressive technical prototype – the e-Evolution Concept. Incorporating the strengths of an SUV, electric vehicle (EV), and new systems designed for a connected mobility experience will not only be part of this concept, but also a part of Mitsubishi’s future. CEO and President Fred Diaz said: “The e-Evolution is far more than just an auto show concept vehicle. It is the embodiment of what Mitsubishi Motors will become, what we will stand for, and the type of vehicles we will bring to our customers in the very near future.” Let’s dive a little deeper and check out what the e-Evolution means for Mitsubishi Motors’ plans of the not-too-distant future.

Performance

Two high-torque, high-performance electric motors power the e-Evolution Concept and are fed by a high-capacity battery system for a smooth and powerful performance. A low center of gravity is important to achieve driving stability, so the drive battery system is located under the floor in the middle of the vehicle. Active Yaw Control (AYC) is an automotive feature developed on Mitsubishi Motors’ World Rally Championship and Paris-Dakar race cars that’s also found on the e-Evolution. AYC uses an active differential to control the driving and braking forces between the left and right wheels for the optimum grip on the road. Since AYC is electronically controlled, it provides crisp and responsive handling that’s faithful to the driver’s intent.

Artificial Intelligence

An Artificial Intelligence (AI) system is the brain of the e-Evolution Concept, proving that Mitsubishi really is looking to the future with this design. The AI system is equipped with numerous sensors that instantly detect changes in road and traffic conditions, as well as the driver’s intent. Driver intent and vehicle performance are then merged seamlessly for an inclusive system that’s capable of supporting drivers of all abilities, even offering a special coaching function that, after an initial assessment of the driver’s skills, unobtrusively offers ways to enhance them. Even those with limited driving abilities will feel like a pro thanks to this highly responsive AI system.

Additional functions of the AI system include functions that can be controlled via voice activation like the headlights, wiper blades, and even having the ability to warn the driver of various malfunctions. A large flat screen that displays outside conditions, navigation, and coaching information span the full width of the dashboard. Two smaller screens flank the larger one showing images from the front and rear cameras, while a 360-degree view for occupants is achieved by an expansive glass section. The e-Evolution Concept is part of Mitsubishi’s latest Drive Your Ambition strategy that will see the automaker move towards SUVs with electric mobility and connectivity.

The Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance has been gaining traction as of late, and with their six-year plan, Alliance 2022, the alliance already has plenty going for them. Although Mitsubishi is focused on crossovers and SUVs at the moment, their Outlander PHEV, the plug-in hybrid crossover is one of their most popular vehicles, and is helping to cement a foothold for the alliance as the upswing of hybrid and alternative fuel vehicles gains momentum. Current sales in Europe, and sales projections are showing signs that this is the time to hit the auto market hard and capitalize on hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and electric vehicles (EVs).

Lighting Up Europe

Sales in Europe have been going well for Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi, with a total unit sales increase of 5.1-percent, putting the alliance at a grand total of 5,538,530 vehicles in the first-half of the year that’s a new record! In addition, there’s a growing demand in Europe for all vehicles currently being produced by the alliance. There has been a surge in demand for crossovers, sports utility vehicles, and pickup trucks, as well as zero-emission EVs, and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) models overseas, and the Outlander PHEV may have helped keep the general public satiated until now.

Mitsubishi Outlander – Then and Now

When Mitsubishi entered the US SUV market in 2003 with the Outlander, they couldn’t have possibly predicted the boom in sales the market would experience in the next decade. The Outlander, introduced to replace the outgoing Montero, aimed to provide more luxury and comfort than off-roading capabilities – a trade-off for the brand. The introductory model came equipped with Mitsubishi’s classic 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine and plenty of customizable options. Continuing the Mitsubishi tradition of improvement, in 2004 they upgraded the Outlander’s original engine to boost its horsepower up to 160 horsepower, and in 2005, an extensive addition of safety features. Features such as an optional manual transmission, newly advanced airbags, enhanced disc brakes, and anti-lock braking system were standard on the Outlander by 2006.

The Mitsubishi spirit of constant improvement remained strong, and by 2007 the Outlander experienced its first redesign – only four years after its introduction. This redesign included a 220 horsepower V6 engine – making power a priority for Mitsubishi – and increasing the size of the SUV that allowed for the addition of third-row seating. By 2010 another major redesign arrived, and the Outlander now had new front and rear fascias, a new grille, a redesigned hood, an improved LCD display and GPS system.

Mitsubishi secured their status as a pioneer in green tech when in 2013 they introduced the Outlander PHEV- the world’s first plug-in hybrid SUV. The Outlander PHEV allows drivers three driving modes – battery save mode, battery charge mode, and ECO mode. What is referred to as battery save mode is the driver-activated mode that is intended to conserve the energy within the battery pack once it drops below 90 percent – this is the hybrid mode. The battery charge mode will charge the battery by generating electricity (whether the vehicle is in motion or at a standstill) – and feeding said electricity back into the battery pack. In about 40 minutes consumers can enjoy 80% charge. Lastly, the ECO mode can be activated with just the touch of a button to reduce both fuel and electricity usage. The Outlander PHEV has a combined range of 310 miles, 22 of which are in all-electric mode – free of emissions!

The last time the Outlander experienced any significant changes was in 2012. Now in its third generation, the Outlander is more market-competitive with improved fuel economy – a not-so-small feat accomplished by reducing the overall weight from its predecessor by 200 pounds. Additionally, the interior received upgrades as well, including redesigned seats, sound insulation to lessen noise disturbance, and soft-touch material inserts for the armrests. Safety features available on the Outlander are up-to-date with a blind spot warning system, forward collision mitigation, a multi-view camera, rear cross traffic alert, lane change assist, and lane departure warning.

Keep in mind the federal tax credit of $5,386 – a deductible to be used for the same tax year the Outlander PHEV is purchased. When it comes to travelling, a fully charged battery can power the 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV for a driving range up to 22 miles on pure electricity. If driving all day, with a full charge and a fuel tank, drivers can travel up to 310 miles.

2018 Chevrolet Bolt EV

The 2018 Chevrolet Bolt EV is definitely a vehicle that wows the crowd. All those consumers that have reserved a Tesla may want to rethink where their money is going. Not only is the Chevrolet Bolt EV already available, but drivers have said the Chevrolet Bolt EV can get as much as 250 miles on electricity alone, thanks to regenerative braking – the standard is 238 miles alone. Powered by a 60 kWh lithium-ion battery and an electric drive unit that can generate up to 200 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque.

Being an electric vehicle, the Chevy Bolt EV is eligible for the full $7,500 federal tax credit, applicable to the same tax year the vehicle is purchased. According to FuelEconomy.org, consumers can expect an annual cost of only $550 to keep the Bolt EV charged throughout the year, saving a total of $5,250 in fuel expenses over the course of five years. That’s enough to start a retirement fund!

Starting MSRP is $37,495*.

2018 Kia Niro

The Kia Niro is the very first of its kind – a hybrid crossover. This one is for those of you were were enticed by our opening paragraph. Being that a “hybrid” system is a combination of two different power sources working together, the main power source is an internal combustion engine, a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine specifically built for hybrid vehicles. A supplemental power source is a 1.56 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery that generates power into an electric motor. Together, the hybrid system produces 139 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque.

Each trim of the 2018 Kia Niro, four in total, has a combined fuel economy of 49-50 mpg. In total, this hybrid crossover has a range of 583 miles. According to FuelEconomy.org, the 2018 Kia Niro can help consumers save up to $3500 over the course of five years, only costing $900 a year to keep the hybrid filled up. The 2018 Kia Niro is also applicable for a federal tax credit of $4,543 the same year it is purchased.

Starting MSRP is $22,890*.

2018 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid

Another first of its kind, the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid is the world’s first hybrid minivan. A system known as a 3.6-liter V6 eHybrid engine powers the Pacifica Hybrid. Although called a hybrid, it is actually a plug-in hybrid, also known as a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, able to be driven on only its 16 kWh lithium-ion battery or only on the 3.6L engine, or on both, its battery and 3.6-liter V6 internal combustion engine. When the Pacifica Hybrid is powered only by its battery, the hybrid minivan can travel up to 33 miles emissions free. On a full charge and tank, the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid has a combined driving range of 566 miles.

According to FuelEconomy.org, consumers can expect to save $3000 over the course of five years when driving the 2018 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid. Although not usual, the 2018 Chrysler Pacifica is actually applicable for the whole $7500 federal tax credit. That’s a huge deductible for the same tax year the hybrid minivan is purchased.
