Mitsubishi Motors has been going through a bit of a crisis in 2021. After picking up the pieces of 2020, and the new business strategy for the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance put Mitsubishi at the forefront of which automaker to watch for the next big model of the 21st Century. Since then, all eyes have been on the Japanese automaker with all hopes on the next Lancer or sports car to be produced, especially after the release of the original Starion 4WD concept art. Mitsubishi finally dashed all hopes in late May 2021, when the automaker announced it was putting all of its focus on electric vehicle (EV) development. While it does so, the automaker needs models to put on the market. First, Renault was helping out with a rebadged model to regain footing in the European market, but now, Nissan is also joining the pull.
It’s not a fantastic look for Mitsubishi Motors, let’s be honest. Earlier this year, Mitsubishi decided to pull out of the European market, specifically the UK, before losing more money on developing vehicles with the steering wheel on the right-side of the vehicle (European editions). If anything, Mitsubishi Motors will still be making an appearance in Germany, France, Spain, and Italy – but it might not be a Mitsubishi vehicle at all. As the automotive industry makes its shift towards alternative fuel vehicles like plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), many automakers are starting to make the shift towards green fuel. One automaker making recent strides in electric vehicles (EVs) is Mitsubishi Motors. Known for its fleet of SUVs primarily in the US, a pickup truck overseas, and its plug-in hybrid SUV, the Outlander PHEV, the automaker joined the Renault-Nissan Alliance in 2017. Since then, the automaker has benefited from technology within, and two new green vehicles have already debuted overseas – a micro EV and a new plug-in hybrid SUV, AIRTEK.
The first new vehicle to debut from Mitsubishi was a joint-operation with Nissan. In 2020, Nissan announced a new EV platform that was flexible enough to work with a variety of vehicle types for each automaker in the Alliance – the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance. Since then, the Alliance held a digital conference to discuss future plans, starting with the release of vehicles by Mitsubishi Motors in one or more of its respective regions. The first may be its homeland of Japan.
Alternative fuel vehicles are starting to grow in popularity. We’re not saying hybrid cars, plug-ins, and electric vehicles (EVs) are going to become the norm – no one is saying that. Then again, SUVs were pretty impractical 20 years ago when all they were known for was towing, cargo space, and able to handle varying types of terrain (unless you’re accounting for its high center of gravity). So, if over two decades, these large vehicles could eventually give rise to crossovers and eventually evolve into vehicles that can do all of the above and still offer some decent fuel economy numbers, perhaps a world of EVs isn’t too far off. With many automakers already diving in at full-speed, Mitsubishi Motors is wading into the shallow end with a new platform from Nissan.
In case anyone forgot or was unaware, Mitsubishi and Nissan are tag-teaming the auto industry with their buddy Renault. Known as the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance, back in May of 2020, this automotive group held a digital press conference to review its five (or six) year business plan – Alliance 2022. With lots of investments made with the Alliance Ventures plan, and COVID-19 putting all kinds of investments in a stranglehold, a new business strategy needed to come together.
The Alliance calls it a “Follow-the-Leader” pattern – or strategy. Each automaker within the group is meant to share technology and work together to produce great vehicles en masse, but each automaker will also be in competition with the other. What this means is, at first, each automaker has its own region to set up shop, and one of those automakers will release a new vehicle in its respective region. If sales go well, the other automakers follow suit in a rebadged version in their respective regions before cross-selling into the regions of the other parties in the Alliance.
That brings us to the latest announcement from Nissan and Mitsubishi Motors. Remember that new cross-brand EV platform Nissan was working on? Shared between Nissan, Renault, and Mitsubishi Motors, able to change based on the size, style, and whatever use the automaker would like to gear it towards. This platform could even work on, say, a minicar? If we were to shake a magic 8-ball right about now, then “All signs are pointing to yes.”
Nissan and Mitsubishi Motors recently announced a new electric minicar heading to the Japan auto market. With release possibly this year, going for less than 2 million yen ($18,400), the vehicle is bound to be a hit overseas. Known as “kei cars” in Japan, this type of vehicle makes up 40-percent of all sales in the country. Able to provide over 124 miles (200 km) of range, this Mitsubishi minicar should already prove some healthy competition for the handful of electric minicars set to hit the Japanese market within the next year.
Will this vehicle also come stateside? Well that depends on how well it does in Japan, but if anyone remembers the Mitsubishi i-MiEV, things didn’t bode well for the electric mini in the U.S., only lasting a short while. With the new EV platform from Nissan and a boost from Renault, this new electric minicar might just have a chance, and with the new “Follow-the-Leader” business strategy, if this minicar does do well in Japan, we’re bound to see it in other regions, including North America.

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, or plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, has been very successful overseas, and has had some success stateside as well. Recently entered into the 2020 Rebelle Rally, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV will be making history with the first year the Rally set up a round for hybrid and electric vehicles to recognize and honor the highest-finishing battery-powered electric vehicle (BEV) and hybrid or plug-in hybrid electric vehicle in each car segment. Some automotive publications call PHEVs the perfect transition vehicle for going electric, and with such success behind the Outlander PHEV, many wonder if Mitsubishi will return to all-electric vehicles one day.
According to a recent survey conducted by Kadence International in the United Kingdom (UK), 1,035 Mitsubishi drivers agree that a plug-in hybrid has changed their mind about vehicles that need to occasionally recharge, and are a great midway point to purchasing an all-electric vehicle. The total group was made up of three categories, with 48-percent of Outlander PHEV drivers who considered the PHEV to be an electric vehicle (EV), 9-percent of ICE drivers considering making the switch to an all-electric vehicle. 23-percent of drivers considered a PHEV, but the main concern isn’t actually needing to recharge – it’s driving range.
When Mitsubishi Motors first joined the Renault-Nissan Alliance, it was quickly becoming a great move for the automaker. Soon after, there was talk about a cross-brand EV platform from Nissan, and re-badged Renault vehicles, and Mitsubishi Motors was quick to make use of Alliance resources to expand. However, Mitsubishi Motors seems to be the only Alliance partner moving the needle with concepts like the Mitsubishi Engelberg Tourer at the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show, or the Mitsubishi Mi-TECH system. According to Alliance Plans, Mitsubishi Motors is only supposed to be in charge of plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) development, but Mitsubishi Electric is having a lot of success with the xAUTO, and when it comes to mobile solutions, Mitsubishi Motors Corp. is the one getting the contract. Are Renault or Nissan even doing anything at this point?
Mitsubishi Motors > Renault-Nissan?
Most recently, we finally got some news about what Renault and Nissan are bringing to the Alliance. During the mid-term business plan announcement, the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance discussed a triangle concept where each automaker would be in charge of two goals out of plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) technology, electric vehicle (EV) technology, and autonomous cars. It’s been three years and so far all that seems to be coming out of Renault is a Mitsubishi-branded version of the Renault Trafic van at its factory in Sandouville, France. So, in other words, a rebadged van…like Mitsubishi Motors needs more of that.
When it comes to alternative fuel vehicles, there was once a lot of confusion and misunderstanding about electric motors and their place in the auto industry. Electric motors? How could that compete with the full throttle high-performance horsepower of an octane-burning internal combustion engine? Is there an electric motor out there able to produce horsepower in the high triple digits? Maybe, but when it comes to electric motors, where they really shine is torque. As we all know, torque is what turns the wheels, and torque can also be used to offer the driver better control over a vehicle. Automaker Mitsubishi Motors saw this as an opportunity to work on a new concept coming to the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show – Mi-Tech.
What is Mi-Tech?
A lot of information is still being saved for the Tokyo Motor Show, this October 23, 2019, but Mitsubishi press continues to give little bits of information. At first, all we knew was the automaker planned to introduce a new electric SUV concept at the auto show – but why so soon after the debut of the Mitsubishi Engelberg Tourer at the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show? Remember that interesting concept? The Engelberg Tourer was introduced as the next plug-in hybrid SUV that may one day replace the aging Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV.
It may not seem like the Outlander plug-in hybrid SUV is very old, having just been introduced to U.S. soil a few years ago, but the Outlander PHEV has had a long run on a global scale. Recently, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV hit a milestone of 200,000 units sold, and the 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is getting some upgrades in its golden years. For those that like to drive in luxury, consumers will find most of the upgrades available to the high-end trims in the lineup, the SEL and GT trims. Both come equipped with a new second-generation Smartphone-link Display Audio system for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, and the GT trim also comes with a new Mitsubishi Power Sound System that is replacing the Rockford-Fosgate audio system on previous models going forward.
Mitsubishi brought their A-game to the 2018 LA Auto Show as they debuted an impressive technical prototype – the e-Evolution Concept. Incorporating the strengths of an SUV, electric vehicle (EV), and new systems designed for a connected mobility experience will not only be part of this concept, but also a part of Mitsubishi’s future. CEO and President Fred Diaz said: “The e-Evolution is far more than just an auto show concept vehicle. It is the embodiment of what Mitsubishi Motors will become, what we will stand for, and the type of vehicles we will bring to our customers in the very near future.” Let’s dive a little deeper and check out what the e-Evolution means for Mitsubishi Motors’ plans of the not-too-distant future.
Two high-torque, high-performance electric motors power the e-Evolution Concept and are fed by a high-capacity battery system for a smooth and powerful performance. A low center of gravity is important to achieve driving stability, so the drive battery system is located under the floor in the middle of the vehicle. Active Yaw Control (AYC) is an automotive feature developed on Mitsubishi Motors’ World Rally Championship and Paris-Dakar race cars that’s also found on the e-Evolution. AYC uses an active differential to control the driving and braking forces between the left and right wheels for the optimum grip on the road. Since AYC is electronically controlled, it provides crisp and responsive handling that’s faithful to the driver’s intent.
An Artificial Intelligence (AI) system is the brain of the e-Evolution Concept, proving that Mitsubishi really is looking to the future with this design. The AI system is equipped with numerous sensors that instantly detect changes in road and traffic conditions, as well as the driver’s intent. Driver intent and vehicle performance are then merged seamlessly for an inclusive system that’s capable of supporting drivers of all abilities, even offering a special coaching function that, after an initial assessment of the driver’s skills, unobtrusively offers ways to enhance them. Even those with limited driving abilities will feel like a pro thanks to this highly responsive AI system.
Additional functions of the AI system include functions that can be controlled via voice activation like the headlights, wiper blades, and even having the ability to warn the driver of various malfunctions. A large flat screen that displays outside conditions, navigation, and coaching information span the full width of the dashboard. Two smaller screens flank the larger one showing images from the front and rear cameras, while a 360-degree view for occupants is achieved by an expansive glass section. The e-Evolution Concept is part of Mitsubishi’s latest Drive Your Ambition strategy that will see the automaker move towards SUVs with electric mobility and connectivity.

The Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance has been gaining traction as of late, and with their six-year plan, Alliance 2022, the alliance already has plenty going for them. Although Mitsubishi is focused on crossovers and SUVs at the moment, their Outlander PHEV, the plug-in hybrid crossover is one of their most popular vehicles, and is helping to cement a foothold for the alliance as the upswing of hybrid and alternative fuel vehicles gains momentum. Current sales in Europe, and sales projections are showing signs that this is the time to hit the auto market hard and capitalize on hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and electric vehicles (EVs).
Lighting Up Europe
Sales in Europe have been going well for Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi, with a total unit sales increase of 5.1-percent, putting the alliance at a grand total of 5,538,530 vehicles in the first-half of the year that’s a new record! In addition, there’s a growing demand in Europe for all vehicles currently being produced by the alliance. There has been a surge in demand for crossovers, sports utility vehicles, and pickup trucks, as well as zero-emission EVs, and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) models overseas, and the Outlander PHEV may have helped keep the general public satiated until now.
When looking for a vehicle that has a competitive fuel economy in the auto market, consumers have been turning towards crossovers for their balance of fuel efficiency with their ability to carry a lot of cargo and offer various seating arrangements. When it comes to travelling, a fully charged battery can power the 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV for a driving range up to 22 miles on pure electricity. If driving all day, with a full charge and a fuel tank, drivers can travel up to 310 miles.

The 2018 Chevrolet Bolt EV is definitely a vehicle that wows the crowd. All those consumers that have reserved a Tesla may want to rethink where their money is going. Not only is the Chevrolet Bolt EV already available, but drivers have said the Chevrolet Bolt EV can get as much as 250 miles on electricity alone, thanks to regenerative braking – the standard is 238 miles alone. Powered by a 60 kWh lithium-ion battery and an electric drive unit that can generate up to 200 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque.
Being an electric vehicle, the Chevy Bolt EV is eligible for the full $7,500 federal tax credit, applicable to the same tax year the vehicle is purchased. According to FuelEconomy.org, consumers can expect an annual cost of only $550 to keep the Bolt EV charged throughout the year, saving a total of $5,250 in fuel expenses over the course of five years. That’s enough to start a retirement fund!

The Kia Niro is the very first of its kind – a hybrid crossover. This one is for those of you were were enticed by our opening paragraph. Being that a “hybrid” system is a combination of two different power sources working together, the main power source is an internal combustion engine, a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine specifically built for hybrid vehicles. A supplemental power source is a 1.56 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery that generates power into an electric motor. Together, the hybrid system produces 139 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque.
Each trim of the 2018 Kia Niro, four in total, has a combined fuel economy of 49-50 mpg. In total, this hybrid crossover has a range of 583 miles. According to FuelEconomy.org, the 2018 Kia Niro can help consumers save up to $3500 over the course of five years, only costing $900 a year to keep the hybrid filled up. The 2018 Kia Niro is also applicable for a federal tax credit of $4,543 the same year it is purchased.

Another first of its kind, the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid is the world’s first hybrid minivan. A system known as a 3.6-liter V6 eHybrid engine powers the Pacifica Hybrid. Although called a hybrid, it is actually a plug-in hybrid, also known as a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, able to be driven on only its 16 kWh lithium-ion battery or only on the 3.6L engine, or on both, its battery and 3.6-liter V6 internal combustion engine. When the Pacifica Hybrid is powered only by its battery, the hybrid minivan can travel up to 33 miles emissions free. On a full charge and tank, the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid has a combined driving range of 566 miles.
According to FuelEconomy.org, consumers can expect to save $3000 over the course of five years when driving the 2018 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid. Although not usual, the 2018 Chrysler Pacifica is actually applicable for the whole $7500 federal tax credit. That’s a huge deductible for the same tax year the hybrid minivan is purchased.
