Mitsubishi Electric Designs Building to Reduce Energy Costs to Zero

It’s been a while since we talked about the Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Motors Corp (MMC) that focuses on technology, energy, and is also behind a number of infrastructures in the everyday home. In fact, if the Dendo Drive House ever went global, everyone would be living in a house powered by technology similar to the latest net zero-energy building (ZEB) designed by Mitsubishi Electric. Called “SUSTIE®”, this ZEB is a testing facility building on previous clean energy endeavors by MMC. The latest results from this ZEB show that the building reduced its energy consumption to less than 0-percent. If the numbers are true, it actually created more energy than it consumed.

Now that is really, really cool. A medium-sized office building – 211888 cubic-feet (or 6000 cubic-meters) of floor space – is equipped with solar panels, and uses the latest ZEB operating technology to optimize operations. As we mentioned, this wouldn’t be the first time Mitsubishi Electric worked on net zero energy. In the past (2018) MMC partnered with ENGIE and Hitachi Europe Ltd during the first round of trying to create renewable energy.

The 2019 Geneva International Motor Show brought us a lot of great concepts, and although a month ago, some vehicles are still be talked about as the details start to sink in. Largely taking the spotlight at Geneva were hybrid and electric vehicles. Nearly every automaker had one to display, and that meant an automaker had to do really stand out to get some deserved attention. Mitsubishi Motors achieved this by not just bringing a new plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) concept to the show, but brought a PHEV that could boast high-performance, off-road action, and even came with its own house. Whether the concept becomes a reality is another story.

Taking a look at the Engelberg Tourer, and it screams rugged. The design is sharp and could pass for a luxury SUV in the right light. The box on the roof for extra cargo, shaped like a snowboard, gives way to a well-known ski resort in Switzerland, what the concept is named after. Made for active lifestyles, the Engelberg Tourer could be well suited for winter seasons, and for those who like to go off-road year-round, the Engelberg Tourer is known as a Twin-Motor 4WD plug-in hybrid system.

Mitsubishi Electric Finds New Benefits of Clean Energy

Renewable energy. Is it really worth the investment, does it even make a difference? Earlier this year, (2018) Mitsubishi Motors worked with ENGIE and Hitachi Europe, Ltd. on a project to create renewable energy. By creating a system for renewable energy, the objective seemed to be complete and the project was successful. Following this, the opportunities that were now open to businesses, maybe even homeowners, began to flow. To find how well the renewable energy system worked and the benefits of implementing such a new project, Mitsubishi Electric did some coding and crunched some numbers.

Without going too much into the renewable energy system developed by Mitsubishi Motors, ENGIE, and Hitachi Europe, the design is pretty simple. To accomplish renewable energy, one needs a power source and a place to store excess power for later use. ENGIE is a Building Energy Management System (BEMS) outfitted with solar panels that collect and store energy in the building’s electric grid for use throughout the day. The sun and ENGIE supply the power source.
