Mitsubishi Electric Enhances LiDAR Tech

Mitsubishi Electric, a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Motors Corp (MMC), is a large part of all the cool technology Mitsubishi Motors puts into their vehicles and is continuing to design technology that will greatly benefit the automaker for years to come. During the last two Consumer Electronic Shows, Mitsubishi Electric showed up with plenty of self-driving tech, concepts, and demonstrations. The 2020 CES focused mainly on mobility solutions and the recent contract between Maas Global Oy and MMC. Since 2017, Mitsubishi Electric has been developing autonomous technology, and over the last few years, has continued to advance this tech. The newest system is called the MEMS LiDAR solution.

A little review, LIDAR systems are what many self-driving vehicles use to scan the world around them. Through the use of lasers that illuminate objects, vehicles, and pedestrians, and then reflects that data back to the LiDAR. Through the use of mirrors rotated by motors to capture the light reflected back to the LiDAR, the system is then able to use the data to create three-dimensional recreations of its surrounding environments in real time. Some systems are advanced enough to create entire 3D maps, whereas others mainly develop a grid of objects and their range.

Mitsubishi Electric is taking this kind of technology a step further through the use of a micro-electromechanical system (MEMS). Via the incorporation of a LiDAR system and a dual-axis (horizontal and vertical) MEMS mirror, an extra-wide horizontal scanning angle has been created to accurately detect the shapes and distances of objects ahead of the vehicle. This leads to better scanning of vehicles ahead, oncoming vehicles, pedestrians crossing the road, traffic lights, traffic signs, and roadside obstacles.

This new system is not only lightweight in design but is much easier to mass produce. Unlike conventional LiDAR systems that require large mirrors to maximize light collection and create a wide scanning angle for an accurate representation of information surrounding the vehicle, Mitsubishi Electric’s new MEMS LiDAR is small, measuring 7mm by 5mm, and made from a silicon substrate using semiconductor-processing technology. Going forward, Mitsubishi Electric aims to also achieve a larger vertical scanning angle to allow the detection of vehicles and pedestrians in close proximity.

Whether or not this technology has already been put to work in the Mitsubishi Electric xAUTO is unclear, but we do know how well this self-driving concept operates. During the 46th Tokyo Motor Show in 2019, the xAUTO doesn’t require the latest and most high-definition maps available on one’s mobile device to navigate its way around the world. This concept vehicle can actually operate its way through residential areas, private roads, farm roads, etc. without over-the-air maps. Sounds like a system that can create its own high-definition local map.

We may also see this kind of technology popping up in the mobile solutions that MMC and MaaS Global Oy are working towards, one of which will be a competing self-driving ride-hailing service. Through the utilization of a camera system, congestion predictions, and real-time crowd prediction, consumers will be able to hail an autonomous ride from anywhere that’s designed to pick them up from virtually anywhere and take them where they need to go. It’s going to be a crazy world when the autonomous car race picks up.

Mitsubishi Electric at the 2020 Consumer Electronics Show

The 2020 Consumer Electronics Show is one of the most sought after exhibits every year, and because it takes place so early in the year (January 7-10, 2020), consumers are able to get a good look at appliances, electronics, products, and technologies soon coming to the market. Simultaneously, the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) also attracts many automakers looking to show off their new tech and features coming soon to new models. One automotive corporation, in particular, Mitsubishi Motors Corp, tends to show up to CES 2020 with their sister company Mitsubishi Electric. After the recent partnership between Mitsubishi Motors Corp and MaaS Global Oy, we’re seeing a lot of interesting concepts from Mitsubishi Electric at CES 2020.

Mobility for Everyone

The core of the partnership between MMC and MaaS Global Oy is to create an ecosystem of mobility where every consumer has access to some form of private or public transportation. MaaS Global already has a handle on that with its Whim app in Finland – consumers can sign up for various plans that will give them access to buses, trams, taxis, cars, bicycles, and more transportation services. Working on self-driving and autonomous technology, one interesting concept from MMC and MaaS Global is personal mobile living spaces. On the outside, they look like windowless vans, but on the inside, it can be a miniature office or living room. The vehicle drives itself with the use of a radar and camera fusion piloting system that helps it recognize other cars, pedestrians, and bicyclists, and puts together the best routes to avoid obstacles in real-time.


Mitsubishi Electric Steps Up Their Self-Driving Vehicle Game with the xAUTO

Mitsubishi Motors and Mitsubishi Electric are travelling together for the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show. Only happening every other year, the 46th Tokyo Motor Show this year takes place between October 24 and November 4. The parent company, Mitsubishi Motors Corp (MMC) recently partnered with MaaS Global Oy, and a good part of the exhibits between Mitsubishi Motors and Mitsubishi Electric will be demonstrating how this partnership will evolve in the future. During this time, Mitsubishi Electric will also be showcasing new hybrid and electric vehicle technology, along with two of their self-driving vehicle concepts. The first is a self-driving vehicle concept we’ve seen before, the Mitsubishi Electric Emirai, now in its new form, EMIRAI S. The second self-driving vehicle they’re bringing to the stage is the xAUTO, an autonomous vehicle with a lot going for it.

Featured in the xAUTO

At the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show, Mitsubishi Electric will be focusing on three main features of the xAUTO: (1) its ability to travel on roads where no digital maps are available, (2) capability to self-park indoors (parking garage) and outdoors, and (3) formulate digital maps of the vehicle’s surroundings in real-time without delay. All of this is thanks to the ever-improving self-driving technology designed by Mitsubishi Electric. Their most well-known system is their Mobile Mapping System (MMS), which makes all of this possible.


Mitsubishi Motors Releases Road Assist+ Smartphone App

Mitsubishi Motors isn’t an automaker that’s shied away from self-driving car technology or futuristic concepts. Developed by their sister company, Mitsubishi Electric, Mitsubishi Corp has developed autonomous driving technology and is currently working on artificially intelligent (A.I.) systems to help keep drivers safe. Having recently developed a new smartphone app that can help drivers improve their driving and safety, Mitsubishi Motors was named “Telematics OEM of the Year” at TU-Automotive Detroit, the world’s largest automotive technology conference and exhibition, for their innovative Road Assist+ smartphone application.

Mitsubishi Road Assist+ is a seamless way to offer that while providing cost-savings opportunities for consumers through participating UBI insurance carriers.” Bryan Arnett, senior manager, product planning, MMNA.

Every year, the “Telematics OEM of the Year” award recognizes forward-thinking original equipment manufacturers (OEM) developed for the connected-vehicle space or vehicles that are more interconnected with consumer devices such as smartphones and even homes in some cases. Quickly becoming the next big thing in the auto industry, the “Telematics OEM of the Year” award is one of the most prestigious awards as is anticipated by many in the connected car industry.

Mitsubishi Road Assist+ is the first hardware-free smartphone-based application and is capable of doing a number of things. This application can:

       Collects driving behavior data through telematics technology and then provides feedback to help drivers improve their driving behaviors

       Also collects information given geospatial context to driving events, such as weather and road conditions, to collect more refined information based on how drivers respond in different driving situations

       Provides 24-hour emergency roadside assistance

       Comes with specialized technology (GPS and Driving Signature) that allows the app to give drivers access to exclusive Mitsubishi offers of their choosing

Some of this sounds familiar. Telematics? When Mitsubishi released the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, it became the first Mitsubishi vehicle to support a Telematics System as well as remote safeguard services. Through that system is how Mitsubishi Road Assist+ operates, but the beauty of this app is that it’s hardware-free. That means it doesn’t necessarily need a Telematics System. Mitsubishi Road Assist+ can still inform owners about the cost savings of usage-based insurance (UBI) without having to own a modern or “connected car” with built-in telematics capabilities or aftermarket-installed telematics hardware.

The ability to collect information on driving behavior with different conditions also reminds us of the artificial intelligence Mitsubishi Electric has been working on for future concepts. Most notably, they’re working on developing an AI system that acts as a virtual coach to help drivers on the road during difficult driving conditions and can completely take over driving the vehicle for the driver if necessary. There hasn’t been its debut at the Tokyo Motor Show in October 2017, but we’re keeping an eye on it.

Mitsubishi Breaking into Multiple Markets

With the midsize truck getting its second wind with the recent release of the 2020 Jeep Gladiator, times sure have changed. At the better first half of the decade, midsize trucks nearly died off, known for having the same fuel economy and safety issues of the already popular SUV. America didn’t need another shaky gas guzzler, and most automakers moved onto other pastures. Some automakers focused on other global markets, with Mitsubishi Motors being one of them. Their 2019 Triton pickup truck debuted back in 2018, but there are only hints of it entering the U.S. Market with everything else the automaker is wrapped up in.

Mitsubishi North America Chief Operating Officer Mark Chaffin recently spoke in an interview about entering the U.S. market. As it stands, although the new Mitsubishi Triton is right up there in standards with other trucks in the states, the market is also becoming very competitive. The Japanese automaker would need to have a truck that’s not only right for the automaker but also their demographic in the market. Take a look at the 2019 Mitsubishi Triton pickup truck, also known as the L200 and Strada in other global markets.


Like all of the vehicles in the Mitsubishi lineup, the Triton follows the look set forth by the Mitsubishi Outlander with a dynamic shield across the front fascia. Brought into the modern age, the truck also sports advanced safety features currently popping up in new Mitsubishi Motors, such as Forward Collision Mitigation system, Blind Spot Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, and an Ultrasonic Misacceleration Mitigation System. Designed to be off-road capable, the Mitsubishi Triton is equipped with an enhanced four-wheel drive (4WD) system and two off-road systems, “Super-Select 4WD” and “Easy-Select 4WD”. Both come with various modes to handle a variety of terrain and driving conditions, including gravel, mud/snow, and sand 4WD-high and -low mode, and rock only in 4WD-low mode.

Because the market is so competitive and took a major hit before all the upgrades, Mitsubishi Motors may be more focused on its cooperation with the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance. Word has it that Mitsubishi Motors is currently overseeing the development of a new next-generation midsize truck body-on-frame platform. With the intention of developing cross-brand platforms, the new platform will be shared with a number of vehicles, such as the Renault Alaskan and the Nissan Navara. Moreover, the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance is heavily invested in other areas.

In conjunction with their Alliance 2022 Five/Six-year plan, the Alliance also put together a $1 billion fundraising campaign to help grow startups and entrepreneurs in technology for robotaxis, car sharing, EV batteries, and EV charging. Self-driving autonomous vehicles is one area Mitsubishi Motors has been making some noise in, with the concepts Mitsubishi Electric showed at the 2019 Consumer Electronics Show. Again, at the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show, Mitsubishi showed us what the Motor company is working on, with the Mitsubishi Engelberg Tourer concept and the Dendo Drive House.

Mitsubishi Motors isn’t just focused on its automotive products. With investments in car-sharing services and researching new and better ways to produce lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles, the automaker has hands in many pockets. The U.S. truck market may not be in the mix just yet, maybe by 2025 according to LMC Automotive. Either way, we still have a few more years before Alliance 2022 comes to an end and makes room for other projects.

Gotta say, we’ve been wondering what Mitsubishi Motors has been up to recently. Working tightly with Renault and Nissan through the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance, the company has been pretty tight-lipped on a lot. Finally some interesting news is coming to America, and it comes from Mitsubishi Motors sibling company, Mitsubishi Electric. We got an interesting glimpse at a lot of the autonomous and “smart” car technology that Mitsubishi Electric is working during the 2019 Consumer Electronics Show. Like any good idea, it’s easy to poke some holes, but the company is already looking to plug them up with new security measures.

New Tech Review

For a quick look at the technology Mitsubishi Electric brought to the 2019 CES, a lot of it was centered around autonomous car features and artificial intelligence. Amongst facial recognition and virtual assistance for driver safety, two interesting features that stood out were systems that allowed vehicles to “talk” to one another. Not only could a group of vehicles could all listen to the same music by sharing it between cars, but passengers could also chat and share files with other vehicles.

When it comes to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, unless the connection is secure, than those files, conversations, and other sensitive data are prone to cyber attackers. In the worst case scenario, if anyone saw the movie Upgrade, a self-driving autonomous vehicle could potentially be hijacked by a hacker and taken to a disclosed location for…something bad. Kind of like thieves setting up loot marks in Pokémon Go to attract their victims. What is Mitsubishi Electric’s response to this? A multi-layered defense technology system.

2019 has begun, and after the exciting year for Mitsubishi Motors and the Renault-Nissan Alliance with the Alliance Ventures funding campaign, the automaker is already booming with news. New vehicles and vehicle concepts have begun to come out of the woodwork as it were, and the next concept(s) we’ll see will show up at the 2019 Tokyo Auto Salon this January, 2019. One of these concepts are destined to stay overseas, but the other two are new variants for the popular Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV and Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross.

The first new concept is actually another take on a vehicle already popular in Japan for Mitsubishi Motors. It’s a vehicle in the shape of a cargo van called the Delica. Now, we’re not sure if the Delica is like the Ram ProMaster that can come with upfits, but if anyone were to call the new Delica a cargo van, they’d be mistaken.

Mitsubishi Motors is getting back into the swing of things and has made many advancements to move forward in 2018. Much of this can be attested to new technology, not just for the industry but even a better world. In the beginning, much of what kept the automaker moving forward was the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance.

The Alliance

The Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance pulled Mitsubishi Motors back from the edge, and with the automaker, started a six-year plan to get the alliance ahead. The Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance is placing a lot of their focus on alternative fuel vehicles like hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and electric vehicles (EVs), but also have a large focus on developing autonomous vehicles or investing in companies with similar goals. This started with partnerships with robotaxi startups and investments Alliance Ventures, the alliance funding campaign. Alliance Ventures also made investments in overseas companies, like DiDi in China. This was all just the beginning, for new autonomous technology and alternative fuel vehicles will be coming from Mitsubishi Motors and the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance.

New Tech; New World

Not looking to fall behind anytime soon, Mitsubishi Motors has placed a large focus on autonomous technology for Mitsubishi. In conjunction with this, Mitsubishi is developing artificial intelligence for a new concept, the e-Evolution. Moreover, a new infotainment system by Mitsubishi, Mitsubishi Connect, has already popped up in the 2018 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, but a next generation version of Mitsubishi Connect will be available in the e-Evolution, with an artificially intelligent driving coach to improve driving performance. That’s not all Mitsubishi has achieved, though.

Wouldn’t clean energy be something? With a partnership between Mitsubishi Motors, ENGIE, and Hitachi Europe, we’re getting close. If anything, Mitsubishi Electric tested the clean energy system for the costs and savings a neutral-energy building may experience, with more good than bad results.

Several Achievements

Mitsubishi Motors has also had its time to shine this year. If it’s not their recognition from the Automotive Science Group with the ASG Award, then it’s how well Mitsubishi Motors vehicles do in safety. The 2018 Eclipse Cross received five stars from JNCAP. Most recently, Mitsubishi also developed a new Eclipse Cross concept to enter the 2019 Dakar Rally. The automaker has already won several times with the overseas Outlander, the Pajero.

New Vehicles and Things to Look Forward To

Throughout 2018, we’ve seen many concepts and heard lots of rumors about upcoming Mitsubishi vehicles. We know the automaker is focusing on alternative fuel and electric vehicles, but we’ve also seen a concept or two for the new Mitsubishi Lancer crossover. Mitsubishi Motors also has a new truck to enter the auto market – just not in the US for now.

Other things to look forward to for Mitsubishi Motors have to do with another partnership. Aside from the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance and aside from its partnership with ENGIE and Hitachi Europe for clean energy, Mitsubishi Motors has also signed a partnership with google. Consumers can expect Google Android-based infotainment systems also becoming a choice in future Mitsubishi Vehicles.

Time to do a little review and look towards the future. With the way things are going in the auto industry, we’re steadily taking steps towards bigger and better vehicles. New technology springs up from Mitsubishi every now and then, their Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is heading towards dealerships, and with the Nissan-Renault-Mitsubishi Alliance, there are plenty of high hopes of what’s to come with their Alliance Venture concerning Robotaxis and future hybrids. With all that in mind, what other technologies are going to shape the auto industry in the coming years? Let’s see.

Autonomous Self-Driving Vehicles

This one is obvious. It’s the first step towards showing the world autonomous self-driving vehicles can work if done right. We can’t say much for self-driving vehicles like those run by Uber, but the Chevrolet Bolt EV has had a wonderful track record when it comes to its autonomous fleet, and many other brands are trying their own take on self-driving vehicles, Mitsubishi Motors included. The Nissan-Renault-Mitsubishi Alliance recently unveiled plans to seek out and talk “partnership” with Robotaxi companies in the coming months. If unfamiliar with the term “Robotaxi,” think of it like an autonomous, self-driving taxi or Uber, that may also have some artificial intelligence integrated into the console for human-to-robot interaction. Maybe interacting with these “Robotaxis” will be as simple as telling the vehicle where to go, or maybe as advanced and new age as the virtual assistant in the Mitsubishi Connect concept movie (seen below).

It shouldn’t come as any surprise. Since Mitsubishi and Nissan-Renault signed off on their partnership, Mitsubishi has looked into Nissan-Renault resources for global expansion. Not only that, but the Nissan-Renault Mitsubishi Alliance as a whole has plans to hit the hybrid and electric vehicle market hard with a total of 500,000 plug-in electric hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) in the making. In addition to this, the alliance plans to develop fifteen models with autonomous features by 2022, including a fully autonomous self-driving vehicle.

This brings up a question. Will these self-driving vehicles be able to deliver all of the exciting prospects Mitsubishi debuted at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show with their Mitsubishi e-Evolution or the Mitsubishi Electric Emirai 4? Will these autonomous vehicles be as advanced as to support artificial intelligence by Mitsubishi or other automakers in the industry? Several companies are already working on self-driving vehicles, such as Google, Uber, Apple, Chevrolet, and others. Chevrolet/GM even has claims to already be the first automaker to produce a driverless car with all the success of the self-driving Chevrolet Bolt EV.
