Why the US Wants the 2019 Mitsubishi Triton

When it comes to pickup trucks, the brand name consumers don’t often think about is Mitsubishi Motors. Many may be surprised to know that Mitsubishi Motors is actually competing pretty well in the pickup truck segment. It’s with the success of their newest truck release, the 2019 Mitsubishi Triton, also known as the L200 in other markets. The name should sound familiar, because the Mitsubishi L200 did make it to the states at one point. For now, however, the Triton will only be overseas. It’s a shame with how well the truck handles going off-road, a current popular theme with midsize trucks in the states.

A Truck that Can Handle More than Dirt

Currently, in its fifth generation, the 2019 Mitsubishi Triton got an upgrade in looks. Mitsubishi Motors has been working on changing the look of their “Dynamic Shield” to make their lineup stand out more on the road. However, the real impressive bit of this new truck is when it’s going off-road.

Mitsubishi added a sweet “Super Select II 4WD System” and an “Easy-Select 4WD” to the 2019 Mitsubishi Triton, packing it with multiple different driving modes depending on the conditions and the terrain.  Both systems offer the consumer settings to handle with gravel, mud/snow, and sand in 4WD-high and -low mode, or rock in 4WD-low mode. Kind of like all Jeep models that come with a dial to switch between driving modes and terrain.

With the auto market changing, many automakers are looking for new ways to bring some buzz to some of their more faithful consumer models. Crossovers and SUVs are all the rage, and a new car segment, mini crossovers, is starting to get attention as the next passenger vehicle. Sedans may be slowly falling off the market, and we can only hope some will remain. Until then, automakers like Mitsubishi Motors may stay closer to their bread-and-butter, and their newest concept has us all wondering. Is it the new Lancer Crossover or another model altogether? If anything, please don’t let it be another overseas exclusive.

Coming to the 2019 Geneva Motor Show

It’s the new concept from Mitsubishi, the Mitsubishi Engelberg Tourer. What’s in a name? For Mitsubishi, it’s a rugged Alpine town ski resort in Switzerland. Like many of Mitsubishi marketing campaigns for new vehicles, the majority of this new vehicle is in the dark. We’re presented with curvaceous blue LEDs, futuristic wing-type mirrors, and a couple of off-road lights on the roof. Could Mitsubishi be bringing a different off-road vehicle to the states? After skipping us on the 2019 Triton, one can only hope.

Mitsubishi Debuts Triton During the Rise in Demand for Trucks in America

Earlier this year, in April 2018, CNBC did a report on “The Rise of Burly High-Performance and Off-road SUVS and Trucks”. This report looked at brands like Ford, Fiat Chrysler, BMW, Chevrolet, and Jeep. CNBC also covered the current trend of trucks and SUVs with data from LMC Automotive that predicted how this trend will affect the auto market four years from now. In the shifting automarket for SUVs and trucks, and U.S. sales rising for trucks and SUVs, will Mitsubishi deliver their new 2019 Mitsubishi Triton pickup truck to American shores?

The 2019 Mitsubishi Pickup Truck

Known as the Mitsubishi Triton, or the L200 depending on the country the model is sold in, the new pickup truck from Mitsubishi is a redesigned and improved version of its predecessor. Sporting the “Dynamic Shield” and other design cues from the Mitsubishi Outlander, the new truck has been brought into the modern age. With advanced safety features, such as a Forward Collision Mitigation system, Blind Spot Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, and an Ultrasonic Misacceleration Mitigation System. All of these together help the driver avoid accidents on the road, as well as avoiding other incidents in tight spots, like a parking garage.

What’s interesting about this new pickup truck from Mitsubishi Motors is that the truck is also off-road capable. Equipped with an enhanced four-wheel drive (4WD) system and two off-road systems, “Super-Select 4WD” and “Easy-Select 4WD”, a new off-road a system has been built for the 2019 Mitsubishi Triton. Designed to handle various terrain and driving conditions, both systems can handle gravel, mud/snow and sand 4WD-high and -low mode, and rock only in 4WD-low mode.
