Mitsubishi Advancements in Technology

Miami Lakes Auto Mitsubishi e-Evolution Concept Tokyo Motor Show Interior

Mitsubishi has been changing the game for some time now. Back when we covered Mitsubishi’s Centennial Anniversary, we learned that Mitsubishi Motors started research on electric vehicles (EVs) back in 1971. They were also the first to design a system that adapted to one’s driving behavior, the INVEC system, in 1990. Last time we looked at some of the nifty things Mitsubishi does with their automobiles, we covered the powertrain advancements Mitsubishi Motors made. This time, let’s look at some of the cool new tech popping up in concepts and production vehicles.

Outlander PHEV

Yes, this is another powertrain advancement, but it’s also one of technology. The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has actually been doing well overseas. We have yet to get our hands on it in the states, and it’s unclear if we ever will. However, Mitsubishi Motors recently said the Outlander PHEV would come to America. So a quick refresher on this.

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has several driving modes so that consumers can choose what energy/fuel to use and when. The plug-in hybrid also has three charging modes for convenience and environmental sustainability, i.e. able to charge up to 80 percent in as little as 30 minutes. The Outlander PHEV shows large advancements for its hybrid system; not only can the vehicle travel 32 miles on electricity alone with zero tailpipe emissions, but with a fully charged battery and a full tank, it has a driving range at well over 500 miles.

Infotainment

Mitsubishi Motors is finally getting an infotainment of sorts with the 2018 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross. Still without more than a highlights page on MitsubishiCars.com, we’re still waiting on all the specs for the Eclipse Cross. We do have a little exposé on the new technology in the 2018 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, though. The main focus is on the infotainment system Mitsubishi has placed in the Eclipse Cross – we can’t say what name is powering the system, like how the FCA has Uconnect, but there are some details.

The screen is 8 inches, almost as large as the high-tier Uconnect 8.4 touchscreen. However, instead of a touchscreen, the infotainment has a touchpad near the gearshift for interacting with apps and what’s on screen. This infotainment system can do everything other systems do, such as make phone calls, stream music, and navigate. A second nifty piece of technology in the Eclipse Cross would be the heads-up display that raises from the center console, just behind the dashboard, to relay important information to the driver without having to take their eyes off the road.

Mitsubishi Connect and Artificial Intelligence

When word about Mitsubishi putting artificial intelligence into their e-Evolution concept,  the automotive section of the internet was talking all about it. Just a concept, and probably not looking at production until 2020, a car with an artificial intelligent (AI) system integrated into it was basically unheard of as a practical, everyday happenstance. Even today, Mitsubishi only has a 3D animation to illustrate how this can work with their Mitsubishi Connect demo:

https://youtu.be/5Opl1tGw4ic

When reading about Mitsubishi Connect however, this AI system does seem kind of neat. Not only this, but the AI system is designed to go beyond the Mitsubishi INVEC system, not just adapting to one’s driving behavior, but actually measuring one’s ability to drive in certain situations. If the driver isn’t so skilled in the rain, being a semi-autonomous vehicle, the Mitsubishi e-Evolution can take over and drive for the rest of the way.

We saw more about the e-Evolution concept at the Tokyo Motor Show, where we learned Mitsubishi has even more advancements planned for its infotainment system. The interior of the vehicle itself looks futuristic, but Mitsubishi Motors aims to design their next infotainment system to go beyond entertainment. The next stop will also be safety by replacing the exterior mirrors with video screens that project the surroundings of the car to the driver at all times.

What do you think of all of these advancements? Some are concepts, yes, but we may see them in vehicles very soon. Let us know what you think on our Miami Lakes Automall Facebook page.

Highlights of the 2018 Mitsubishi Models

Miami Lakes Auto 2018 Mitsubishi Models Outlander

Excited for the 2018 model year? Auto brands around the world are releasing and producing their new automotive lineups, and Mitsubishi Motors has already put the goods for their 2018 models online. Let’s recap what Mitsubishi Motors has going on while we wait for more information about the 2018 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross and the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV.

2018 Mitsubishi Outlander

Icon of the Mitsubishi Motors brand, the Outlander doesn’t need to change much to remain as one of the top dogs in the lineup. This year, all four trims get a bit of a name change, with the digits “2.4” added at the end of the trim name, except for the GT, now known as “GT 3.0”. There are still two engine options, with the ES 2.4, SE 2.4, and SEL 2.4 powered by the standard 2.4-liter MIVEC SOHC I4 engine that generates 166 horsepower, and the GT 3.0 powered by the 3.0-liter MIVEC SOHC V6 with an output of 244 horsepower. In terms of aesthetic and convenient features, all trims have heated exterior mirrors, rear privacy glass, and automatic dual-zone climate control. For a little more comfort, heated front seats and a leather wrapped steering wheel can be found on select trims as an option or included. For entertainment purposes and safety, all trims will have a 7-inch display screen with a rearview camera for the 2018 model year, and high-end trims finally have Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto capability.

2018 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport

Another icon of the brand, the Outlander Sport sometimes outdoes its sibling. We’re sad to see the Outlander Sport Limited Edition leave the 2018 lineup, but it was a “limited” production trim. Now reduced to three trims, the Outlander Sport base trim has some extra features, and who can argue about getting more features for less? The same standards and options on the Outlander trims are also on the 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport. All Mitsubishi Outlander trims have a 7-inch display screen with a rearview camera, and Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto are standard on the Outlander Sport SE 2.4 and Outlander Sport SEL 2.4. This year, more advanced features, like automatic high beam headlights, forward collision mitigation, and lane departure warning are available on various trims.

2018 Mitsubishi Mirage

Mitsubishi’s fuel efficient hatchback, the Mitsubishi Mirage, is still as popular as ever. The engine powering all three Mirage trims is still a 1.2-liter I3 engine with MIVEC technology, paired to a 5-speed manual transmission or a CVT automatic transmission. Mitsubishi spruced things up for the 2018 model year and made some changes to the interior. Rear floor heater ducts are now a lineup standard, and there are heated front seats on the Mirage GT. To beef up the base trim, the Mirage ES, there is a standard 7-inch touchscreen, which is a great modern amenity. For added capability, the Mirage SE and GT trims have a 6.5-inch smartphone link display system with Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto. Other tech features, such as Bluetooth wireless technology and steering wheel mounted audio and voice/phone controls are standard for the 2018 model year.

2018 Mitsubishi Mirage G4

Lastly, the Mirage G4, the sedan version of the Mirage, is still kicking it with two trims, which are both powered by the same powertrain in the Mirage. The Mirage G4 SE comes standard with a leather wrapped steering wheel and heated seats. The base, Mirage G4 ES, has the same 7-inch touchscreen, but can upgrade to have the same Google Android Auto and Apple CarPlay capabilities of the SE (set up with a 6.5-inch smartphone link display). Again, Bluetooth wireless technology is a lineup standard, along with a rearview camera system. Steering wheel mounted audio and voice/phone controls are standard for the SE trim, but consumers can opt-in for voice controls for the ES.

That wraps up the new changes for the Mitsubishi 2018 model year lineup. How do these sound to you? Let us know what you think of the new 2018 Mitsubishi Mirage or 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport on social media. You can also find new 2018 Mitsubishi models in our inventory.

Well, it’s been quite the wait and endless teasing, but once and for all the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is coming to America. The New and Improved Mitsubishi Outlander

2016-mitsubishi-outlander_100513595_h

New for the 2016 model year is a totally refreshed Mitsubishi Outlander, enhanced by more than one hundred improvements.

Although the crossover segment is a competitive one, this new Outlander has the distinction of being the only one equipped with a four-cylinder engine and ready to accommodate seven passengers across three rows of seating.

Check out the rest of the Outlander’s offerings, available now at your local Mitsubishi Outlander dealer.

What You Need to Know About the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander

First of all, Mitsubishi meant business when it revisited this crossover.

According to Mitsubishi Executive Vice President Don Swearingnen, “This is probably the best product we have ever brought to market…We tried to challenge the status quo.”

Mission accomplished, sir.

We’re loving the new commercial and the premise that so many improvements required so many spokespeople.

This crossover comes with two engine options. The base model comes from a 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder engine, rated at 166 horsepower and 162 lb.-ft. of torque. However, drivers can opt for the more powerful 3.0-liter 24-valve V6 engine, generating 224 horsepower and 215 lb.-ft. of torque.

Fuel efficiency is something to celebrate in the Outlander, with the front-wheel drive base engine able to get 31 highway miles and 25 city miles, or 27 mpg combined. All-wheel drive sees a slight dip in those numbers, bringing the figures to 29 city, 24 highway, and 26 combined.

The added power of the V6 compromises the fuel economy slightly, but it’s worth it if you need that extra punch. Expect miles per gallon at an EPA-estimated 21 city miles, 28 highway miles, with 24 miles combined.

Thanks to the new Outlander’s Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), the acceleration is smooth and strong.

With all of its safety features, including seven air bags, anti-lock braking system with brake assist, active stability control, and tire pressure monitoring, to name just a few, we have every reason to believe that the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander will continue the legacy of its predecessors as a Top Safety Pick.

Between the third row with seven passenger potential, towing ability (rated at 3,500 pounds), and the Outlander’s solid fuel economy, it’s hard to believe that the new Outlander is even more affordable than any of those that came before it.

Starting at $22,895, the new Outlander is setting the pace in the crossover segment when it comes to affordability without sacrifice. Cars.com actually named the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander the “Most Affordable 3-Row Crossover.”

Those who have already had the privilege of driving it report a much better ride, improved handling, and a quiet interior.

Without a doubt, the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander is worth considering for your next crossover purchase.
