Get a Sneak Peek at the New Mitsubishi Pickup Truck

Miami Lakes Automall Mitsubishi L200 Truck Refresh

Mitsubishi Motors sure likes to tease their vehicles. Just like the silhouette of the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, a return of the Mitsubishi Eclipse sports car as a crossover, the revival of the Mitsubishi truck is getting the same treatment in terms of its debut. Known as the L200 in some countries, and the Triton in others, the Mitsubishi Motors pickup truck got a bit of a refresh, and this time, it’s going global. With the automarket filling up with SUVs, crossovers, and trucks, now is the time for Mitsubishi to make a comeback into the North American market.

The Looks

So we took the original Mitsubishi tease and shined a little light on it with some photoshop brightness/contrast filters. Nothing fancy, but it gives us an extra peek at what Mitsubishi is trying to hide. The thin headlights and and running daytime lights (RDL) above the bumper are still there, but the well-known honeycomb grille is still too far dark to get a look at it. If anything, the front fascia is looking a lot like a Mitsubishi Outlander. If we didn’t know any better, we’d say the new Triton is the Mitsubishi Outlander with a truck bed. Hey, if Jeep can do it with the Wrangler Scrambler, then why not Mitsubishi?

Mitsubishi Uses Augmented Reality to Help Explain Vehicle Tech

Miami Lakes Automall Mitsubishi Augmented Reality App

With consumer and automotive technology on the up swing, automakers are starting to get more involved in the digital age to connect with their consumer base. In 2016, when the Kia Niro was still on the production line, Kia advertised their hybrid crossover with a Facebook Messenger bot, the Niro Bot, to answer questions about the vehicle. In early 2018, soon after the 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL debuted, Jeep also released their “New Jeep Adventure App”, a virtual reality app that allowed consumers to configure, take pictures of, and virtually sit inside their own Jeep Wrangler JL. Now, Mitsubishi Motors is doing something similar to continue to raise sales for the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV by implementing augmented reality in dealerships, starting with Canada.

Canada is part of the North American market, although they may get various versions due to different federal regulations and what not. Why Mitsubishi is taking this technology to our neighbors of the north first is anyone’s guess, but it’s still a neat feature that can travel down to us in the next year or so. The augmented reality Mitsubishi dealerships will be using is actually an app developed for Mitsubishi North York, Ont.-based St. Joseph Communications.

The app is used to help sales people explain to customers the technology of the 2018 Outlander plug-in hybrid electric utility vehicle. All a salesperson needs to do is point the tablet towards a part of the plug-in that’s visible, say, the front tire. Once the app registers and locks into place, the app then allows the viewer to do a virtual walk around to see the vehicle from different positions via hyper-accurate tracking and registration coding techniques with tracking markers.

Miami Lakes Automall 2019 Mitsubishi Triton Front Spy Shot

Revival of the Mitsubishi Triton Spied

Miami Lakes Automall 2019 Mitsubishi Triton Front Spy Shot

It’s been some time since we’ve heard Mitsubishi Motors discuss the return of their pickup truck line. The revival of the good ol’ Mitsubishi Triton was sort of teased when TopGear modified the L200 into a desert-capable truck, but that was the highlight of hints. Well, although we hate the paparazzi, we can’t help but love spy photos. In this round, a couple of spies grabbed shots of the Mitsubishi L200 pickup truck, the Triton, but with a bit of a facelift.

Double-cab prototypes of the Mitsubishi pickup truck revival were spotted recently with huge design changes. Compared to the picture of the Mitsubishi Triton above, the new design looks meaner and more aggressive than the common day pickup. Mitsubishi is aiming for a performance-based crossover for the new Mitsubishi Lancer crossover, but who’s to say a high-performance truck can’t also be in the cards?

The front fascia has been completely changed with a new take on the honeycomb-grille, thin headlights, and another set of lights below, most likely running day lights, in each corner above the front bumper. From the front or the side, the new truck looks pretty rugged overall, but not as bulky as its predecessor. The new truck is also looking bigger, and seeing as how this prototype is just starting the testing phase, there may not be any release dates until 2020 or more like 2022 with the Alliance 2022 six year plan in action.

2022 means more modern tech. With recent Mitsubishi Motors vehicles like the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross that have a smartphone link display system, we can expect to see similar or the same tech in the new Mitsubishi Triton, along with upgrades like Bluetooth or voice control systems and other on-board tech. We’ll also see some safety, maybe some of the new tech popping up in trucks today like trailer stability assist, sway control, maybe even a truck bed rear view camera so drivers can keep an eye on their cargo load.

In terms of performance, it’s a little too early to tell what kind of powertrain will be installed into the Mitsubishi pickup truck. Currently, the towing capacity goes up to 7,716 pounds, so to bring that up, Mitsubishi Motors may need to reach higher than a turbocharged 2.5-liter engine. A four-wheel drive system would also be a good addition with Mitsubishi Motors all-wheel control or super all-wheel control for handling all types of terrain.

Truth is, with spy shots of prototypes, anything can happen over the next few years. The good news is, once the new Mitsubishi L200/Triton pickup truck does hit the market, it’s planned to go global. Can it handle the competition from the likes of the Ford Ranger and Nissan Navara, though? Come 2022, we should know and so will you. Keep up to date with news on Mitsubishi Motors by following Miami Lakes Mitsubishi social media. Or check out the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross for an idea of some of the new technology Mitsubishi Motors is putting into vehicles today.

Miami Lakes Automall Mitsubishi Lancer EVO Crossover

What If the New Mitsubishi Lancer Had EVO DNA?

Miami Lakes Automall Mitsubishi Lancer EVO Crossover

When Mitsubishi Motors said they were reinventing the EVO nameplate for an all-electric SUV, many fans of the old Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution weren’t very happy. After all, the Lancer EVO was a rally car, and the last Mitsubishi Lancer EVO was sold on eBay, September 2017. A little later, Mitsubishi Motors debuted the Mitsubishi e-Evolution at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2017. They called it a “high-performance” SUV, and had plans to also make it semi-autonomous with all new futuristic designs inside and out. Then, in early 2018, Mitsubishi announced the revival of the Mitsubishi Lancer as a crossover. Signs are pointing to this new Lancer becoming the e-Evolution concept to resurrect the nameplate. Again, fans aren’t happy, but let’s take a look at what the Lancer EVO was once capable of, and how its abilities can translate into a crossover today.

Here’s a video of Jeremy Clarkson from BBC’s TopGear showing off the Lancer EVO eighth-generation, and ultimately racing a Lamborghini Murciélago. The results were surprising.

Miami Lakes Automall Mitsubishi Mirage Nissan Juke

The New Mitsubishi Mirage Will Be Based Off the Nissan Juke

Miami Lakes Automall Mitsubishi Mirage Nissan Juke

Psych! The new Mitsubishi Mirage will actually not be modeled after the Renault Clio or on the Renault Clio platform. That’s why you should never listen to a rumor, kids. The interesting M.R.G. concept based off of the Renault Clio looked good, but now that we know that the Clio claim was a rumor, we can imagine the next Mirage will actually look pretty different when compared to the M.R.G. concept. It makes more sense after all – the Mirage is a hatchback, and the Clio is a supermini car. So instead of taking some parts from Renault, Mitsubishi Motors will be taking a platform from another vehicle in the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance – the Nissan Juke.

This news comes straight from the Japan-based automotive media agency, Response. The Nissan Juke is sort of somewhere between the Mitsubishi Mirage and the Renault Clio. In all honesty, the Clio actually looks like an elongated version of the Mirage hatchback, but a longer platform would mean a whole new redesign of the vehicle. We don’t think that’s a good idea after what happened to the Re-Model A PHEV. We rather not remember that fiasco…

Miami Lakes 2018 Outlander PHEV

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV – Not Your Typical Plug-in Hybrid

Miami Lakes 2018 Outlander PHEV

When consumers think about hybrid cars, plug-ins, or electric vehicles, there are usually a lot of misconceptions or worries that creep up. Some think hybrid vehicles are all about the added fuel economy, and yes, some vehicles don’t change much, like the Kia Optima Hybrid, but that vehicle is a winner in all of its incarnations. When it comes to plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles, that’s when people really start to get the heebie jeebies. “What if I run out of electricity, am I stranded?” Well, probably yeah, if it’s an all-electric vehicle – that’s why we’ve compiled a list of electric vehicle charging stations around the Miami, Florida area. In terms of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), it’s just like a regular car with an extra power source – gas up or charge up, the choice is yours.

But is that all? The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV says otherwise.

Yes, the 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has a nice setup with a 2.0-liter MIVEC DOHC engine and two electric motors for a great combination of gasoline and electric power. And yes, drivers can drive 22 miles with zero tailpipe emissions for chunk change, or 310 miles with a full tank of gas and a fully charged 12.0 kWh lithium-ion battery. That’s the usual changes in a plug-in hybrid, but the Mitsubishi Outlander has many unique features, and it’s not all about fuel economy or savings – not that anyone would mind.

University Mitsubishi-Renault-Nissan-Didi Auto Alliance

Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance Contract with China Mobility

University Mitsubishi-Renault-Nissan-Didi Auto Alliance

Good news, everyone! Well, maybe. It seems the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance may have snagged the first deal with a mobility company through their “Alliance Ventures” funding campaign. Set to spend $1 billion to support open innovation, start-ups, and entrepreneurs in technology, the alliance started off the campaign by setting aside $200 million for the first year’s budget. Much of the collaborators interest lie within self-driving autonomous vehicle technology, like robotaxis, and alternative fuel technology. The new collaboration between the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance and the Didi Auto Alliance (China based) will be looking at electric-vehicle car sharing.

Two Alliances Meet

We already knew the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance (Man they need an acronym) was already going into the electric vehicle market with gusto, and now it seems that making their own hybrid SUVs and vehicles isn’t the only item on the menu. Working with other companies via the Alliance Ventures funding campaign was already obvious, but we didn’t know how global the campaign was set to go until now. April 2018 dons the first announcement that the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance will be collaborating with Didi Auto Alliance to pursue new smart mobility solutions in China.

The Didi Auto Alliance is an intelligent ride-sharing alliance that was initiated by Didi, a Chinese ride-sharing, artificial intelligence, and autonomous technology conglomerate. Think “Uber” here in the states. Didi Auto Alliance aims to unite all its members to transform the business model of the automotive industry and become the largest full-capacity vehicle operator platform in the world. What a strong partner to match up with for the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance.

What Is Gap Insurance and Should I Get It?

Gap-Insurance-Miami-Lakes-Automall

In the state of Florida, it’s illegal to drive without auto insurance. Of course, the most important thing when you’re dealing with an accident is to know you’re covered and will have enough money to pay off any existing payments owed.

Gap insurance is used together with collision coverage or comprehensive coverage. If you’re leasing or financing a new car, many lenders require you to have collision and comprehensive coverage on your car insurance policy until your car is paid off. Gap insurance is available to help when your vehicle has been totaled in an accident and your totaled vehicle has to be paid off.

An Example of When You’ll Need Gap Insurance

Let’s say, for example, you were just in an accident and your vehicle has been totaled and you still owe $15,000 on the loan for your vehicle. Your insurance company will reimburse you for the value of the vehicle at the time of the accident, so say that’s $10,000, you are still responsible for paying the remaining $5,000 of the loan, and that’s where gap insurance comes in. Gap insurance covers the remaining loan balance after the insurance company has paid the insurer for the value of their vehicle.

This does not cover any funds that you’ll need for a new vehicle. The money you would receive to pay off the totaled car is only for that and never goes over that amount. If you were looking to have money for your next vehicle, the option of new car replacement coverage is an option to add to your insurance plan. Those new car coverage plans can be coupled together with certain insurance plans that will include gap coverage.

How Do I Know If I Need Gap Insurance?

Ask these questions if you’re not sure to get gap insurance: Do you owe more money to pay off your loan than your vehicle is worth? Can you afford to pay out the difference today if your vehicle is a total loss? These are the factors that should make up your decision to go with gap insurance. If your auto loan is more than 60 months or you’re currently leasing your car, you might have gap coverage included.

When Can Gap Insurance Be Applied?

Gap insurance can be applied if you’re vehicle is stolen or totaled, which the latter is a decision entirely on your insurance and can’t be determined any other way. If you have more questions about whether or not you want to include gap insurance with a vehicle you plan on buying or leasing from us, stop on by for a longer conversation.

Miami Lakes Automall 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Unique

What’s Unique About the 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV?

Miami Lakes Automall 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Unique

Now that the 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has been added to the North American lineup and is already on its way to dealership showrooms, it’s time to talk a little more about what makes this plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) so darn special! What makes it “unique” aside from the fact that it’s a plug-in hybrid? What makes it tick? Is there anything new? Well, let’s take a look at a couple of the features that make the 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV “unique”.

Powertrain

Let’s get the most obvious bit out of the way. The 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is powered by a plug-in hybrid setup. What this means is, like any other hybrid or PHEV model, the Outlander PHEV is powered by both, an internal combustion engine powered by gasoline and an electric motor powered by a battery. But unlike hybrid vehicles, PHEVs have a battery and electric motor that are powerful enough to run the vehicle itself without the internal combustion engine. The current setup in the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is a 2.0-liter MIVEC DOHC 4-cylinder engine that can generate 117 horsepower and 137 lb-ft of torque and two electric motors.

That would be the first unique difference about the 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Most plug-in hybrids split the power between the internal combustion engine and one electric motor. The Outlander PHEV has two electric motors. Both can generate 60 kW of power; the front motor can generate 101 lb-ft of torque (represented as 137 Newton Meters (Nm) on the Mitsubishi website due to European metrics), and the rear motor can generate 143 lb-ft of torque (195 Nm). The battery that powers these motors is a 12.0 kWh lithium-ion battery – definitely larger than one would find in a normal hybrid vehicle.
