A Look Back at the Mitsubishi Eclipse

miami-lakes-mitsubishi-eclipse-history

Mitsubishi Motors was once known as a racecar automaker. Entering rally car races and winning the World Rally Championship (WRC) multiple times with a variety of models, we looked at the Starion 4WD, the Lancer Evolution, and the Galant AMG. Although most of these have yet to be seen again, one model found a new life as a crossover. The one and only Mitsubishi Eclipse had a wonderful life, spanning from 1990 – 2012, and found a new spark as the Eclipse Cross.

1990s

Named after an 18th century English racehorse, when the first generation of the two-door, four-seat Mitsubishi sports car launched, the sporty coupe had a diverse lineup with the Eclipse, Eclipse GS, Eclipse GS-T (Turbo), and Eclipse GSX making up the group. The high-end trim GSX came with all-wheel drive (AWD), with front-wheel drive (FWD) standard on the rest of the lineup. For a power boost, the Turbo and GSX trims came with a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4G63 engine under the hood, able to generate up to 195 horsepower, accelerate from 0-60 mph in less than seven seconds, this engine made it to Car and Driver’s “10 Best Lift” for four years running (1989 -1992). The Eclipse was a terrific combination of form, function, beauty, and technology.

A game-changer came with the second-generation, introducing the Eclipse Spyder. Designed as a soft-top convertible, Mitsubishi consumers could enjoy the open air in this new coupe. Available in two trim levels, GS and GS-T, the standard powertrain was a 4G64 aspirated engine, whereas the GS-T of course came with the turbocharged 4G63 of the first generation.  We saw some real changes in 2003 onward.

Closer Look at Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi EV Plans

Back in March 2022, the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance shared their plans for 2030, and so did just about every other large automotive group. This is why competition in an industry is such a crazy thing – everyone does the same thing, but tries to do it better. Building on business plans announced in May 2020, all eyes are on Mitsubishi Motors for the next new model to launch, and electric vehicles (EVs) and battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) seem to be the next move for the Alliance. Some new information on the road to an EV lineup has been released since then, expanding a bit more on the new EV platforms and batteries under development by the Alliance.

The Roadmap to 2030

The Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance boasted their experience in EV Research and Development (R&D), engineering, and mass production for over ten years. With a total sum of $1,056,770,000 already invested, the Alliance has poured many of its EV resources into 15 manufacturing plants already in operation, building parts, motors, and batteries for 10 upcoming EV models. Working to develop the next generation of EV technologies and car connectivity, the Alliance intends to invest $24,305,710,000 more into its production for a total of 35 new EV models by 2030. Some of this has already begun with an investment into a new EV facility for the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance.

Mitsubishi Supports Team Mitsubishi Ralliart in AXCR 2022

In recent years, Mitsubishi Motors has been showing off their racing stripes and reigniting its old school years of rally cars. One of the most notable events would be the annual Rebelle Rally, an all-women’s off-road navigational rally raid in the U.S, the Rebelle Rally spans from the slopes of Lake Tahoe, California to the Imperial Dunes of Glamis, east of San Diego – the first of its kind. Mitsubishi competed in the 2019 Rebelle Rally with the Eclipse Cross, the 2020 Rebelle Rally with the Outlander PHEV, and the 2021 Rebelle Rally with the new 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander. Each time, Mitsubishi Motors showed off another one of its models and its capabilities, landing in the winner’s circle. Overseas, a cross country rally is taking place this summer, and Mitsubishi Motors is entering as technical support for Team Mitsubishi Ralliart.

“For many years, Mitsubishi Motors competed in the World Rally Championship and the Dakar Rally, winning championships in both of them and improving the driving performance of Mitsubishi cars that can be enjoyed with peace of mind in any weather or road conditions…Mitsubishi Motors’ participation in the AXCR in the form of technical support will strengthen our product uniqueness, especially for ASEAN strategic models including 1-ton pickup truck and SUVs. Team Mitsubishi Ralliart will make preparations to meet the expectations of our fans, so please stay tuned.” – Hiroshi Masuoka, team director of Team Mitsubishi Ralliart

Always the sponsor, and not the driver, Mitsubishi Motors is showing its support for Team Mitsubishi Ralliart, a private team owned by TANT SPORTS in Thailand, led by Hiroshi Masuoka as team director. Masuoka is a two-time Dakar Rally champion driver back in 2002 and 2003. Their vehicle of choice is the automaker’s global strategic model, the Mitsubishi Triton 1-ton pickup truck, an overseas vehicle we’ve been waiting to come stateside. With the pickup truck market showing growth for midsize trucks, it would be a good time to expand the lineup from SUVs. Competing in the Asia Cross Country Rally (AXCR) 2022, this will be a great time to see what the truck can do.

Mitsubishi Motors and the J.D. Power 2020 Manufacturer Website Evaluation Study

miami-lakes-mitsubishi-motors-jd-power-website-usefulness

When it comes to shopping for a new car, consumers can find it quickly overwhelming to do the research, read reviews, and narrow down their choices. Even after all that, once a model is chosen, consumers then need to find which trim is right for them. It can be frustrating, because for auto manufacturers who want to sell lots of cars, they sure do tend to make their websites impossible to deal with. Recently, J.D. Power conducted its semiannual 2020 Manufacturer Website Evaluation Study for Winter, and the results were pretty interesting. Mitsubishi Motors ranked highest in the mass market brand for website usefulness.

Mitsubishi Engelberg Concept Coming to Geneva

Miami Lakes Mitsubishi Concept Geneva Motor Show

With the auto market changing, many automakers are looking for new ways to bring some buzz to some of their more faithful consumer models. Crossovers and SUVs are all the rage, and a new car segment, mini crossovers, is starting to get attention as the next passenger vehicle. Sedans may be slowly falling off the market, and we can only hope some will remain. Until then, automakers like Mitsubishi Motors may stay closer to their bread-and-butter, and their newest concept has us all wondering. Is it the new Lancer Crossover or another model altogether? If anything, please don’t let it be another overseas exclusive.

Coming to the 2019 Geneva Motor Show

It’s the new concept from Mitsubishi, the Mitsubishi Engelberg Tourer. What’s in a name? For Mitsubishi, it’s a rugged Alpine town ski resort in Switzerland. Like many of Mitsubishi marketing campaigns for new vehicles, the majority of this new vehicle is in the dark. We’re presented with curvaceous blue LEDs, futuristic wing-type mirrors, and a couple of off-road lights on the roof. Could Mitsubishi be bringing a different off-road vehicle to the states? After skipping us on the 2019 Triton, one can only hope.

There’s also the possibility of this being the new Mitsubishi Lancer Crossover. Look at that image.

Mitsubishi’s Advanced Safety Features

2018-Mitsubishi-Outlander-Miami-Lakes-Automall

With every passing year few brands have added and expanded their safety features as much as Mitsubishi Motors. From the latest technology that has been added to their entire lineup of vehicles, there’s been a substantial improvement with higher safety ratings as of late.

Recent Safety News for Mitsubishi Motors

Most recently, the 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander being named to the IIHS’s Top Safety Pick list for Small SUVs. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety), even with stiffened requirements for their 2018 ratings, bestowed the Top Safety Pick rating to Mitsubishi for their dedication towards providing improved safety.

Let’s take a look at some of the features that you’ll find not only in the 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander, which received a 9.3 safety rating from U.S. News, but in nearly every 2018 Mitsubishi vehicle that help protect drivers every day.

Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution (RISE)

All Mitsubishi vehicles today are built with the signature Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution (RISE) construction design. In the event of an accident, this design enhances passenger protection with energy-absorption technology built into the front, rear, and sides. The 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander side collision rating by U.S. News is a 5, the highest for that category. Mitsubishi drivers can feel safer knowing their passengers and cargo are better protected.

Front Pedestrian Impact Crumple Zones

Similarly, the body construction of 2018 Mitsubishi vehicles are also designed to protect pedestrians. Crumple zones have been implemented into the bumper and lip of cars to reduce injury to any pedestrian that might end up being struck by a vehicle.

Active Stability Control

This system is designed to monitor the traction and grip of each individual tire. If wheel slip is detected, an anti-lock braking system is quickly engaged and will apply the brakes to the wheels with traction to avoid a spinout. This is a huge upgrade to ensure safety, even at high speeds.

Traction Control Logic

Another feature for driver control, like all cars that have stability and traction control systems, traction control logic keeps wheel spin among all tires equal by applying brakes to a freely spinning wheel and applying torque to it, the opposite of active stability control to bring an equilibrium between all of the tires, thus allowing the vehicle to continue moving safely ahead.

Advanced Safety Features

While distracted drivers are the culprit of some accidents, there are plenty of accidents that don’t involve distracted drivers. To help keep the driver and passengers safe, Mitsubishi has a couple advanced safety features that help drivers by alerting them of potentially hazardous situations or even taking control of the vehicle when necessary.

Forward Collision Mitigation

One of the best systems for any modern vehicle is that will warn the driver if approaching another vehicle too quickly and will apply the brakes if the driver does not react in an attempt to avoid an accident or decrease the intensity of impact.

Lane Departure Warning

When a driver begins to depart their lane or gets too close to the lines separating different lanes, a buzzing sound will notify the driver. This is a simple, yet effect measure to help reduce accidents from happening.

Adaptive Cruise Control

Adaptive cruise control provides drivers with an extra cushion of protection as it automatically adjust a vehicle’s speed to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead.

The Place to Drive a New Safe Vehicle Home

Find out what these features can do for you with a live, test drive when you visit Miami Lakes Automall.
