Mitsubishi Motors sure likes to tease their vehicles. Just like the silhouette of the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, a return of the Mitsubishi Eclipse sports car as a crossover, the revival of the Mitsubishi truck is getting the same treatment in terms of its debut. Known as the L200 in some countries, and the Triton in others, the Mitsubishi Motors pickup truck got a bit of a refresh, and this time, it’s going global. With the automarket filling up with SUVs, crossovers, and trucks, now is the time for Mitsubishi to make a comeback into the North American market.

The Looks

So we took the original Mitsubishi tease and shined a little light on it with some photoshop brightness/contrast filters. Nothing fancy, but it gives us an extra peek at what Mitsubishi is trying to hide. The thin headlights and and running daytime lights (RDL) above the bumper are still there, but the well-known honeycomb grille is still too far dark to get a look at it. If anything, the front fascia is looking a lot like a Mitsubishi Outlander. If we didn’t know any better, we’d say the new Triton is the Mitsubishi Outlander with a truck bed. Hey, if Jeep can do it with the Wrangler Scrambler, then why not Mitsubishi?

Android-based Infotainment Systems Coming to a Mitsubishi Near you

The Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance recently announced that they’ve agreed to a multi-year deal with Google to include Android-powered infotainment systems in vehicles they manufacture. This latest deal comes as part of the Alliance’s strategy to equip new vehicles with a broader array of infotainment and tech features. This modern infotainment system will begin its launch in 2021, fully integrating the dashboard displays and the Android operating system (OS).

What Google has accomplished here is no small feat – the tech giant has been attempting to infiltrate the car market with their operating system for over a decade. Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi, the world’s largest automaker alliance, sold more than 10 million vehicles worldwide in 2017, and over 5.5 million during the first half of the current year (2018), making the Alliance the perfect partner to introduce an Android-based infotainment system to the masses. The more integrated and easy-to-use an infotainment system is, the more appealing it makes a vehicle for a potential buyer.

Drivers and passengers will be enabled to do things like using Google Maps directly from the vehicle, use the voice-controlled audio assistant when answering texts and calls, search for information while managing different functions within the vehicle, and eventually run automotive apps straight from the Google Play store. These features will be combined with the automaker’s Alliance Intelligent Cloud to enable vehicle diagnostics and remote software upgrades. Apple iPhone users do not need to worry; the infotainment system will also be compatible with Apple iOS.

The reason it’s taken Google this long? Automakers are wary of the data-mining that Google will have access to when they install the Android Operating System, leaving car manufacturers without a source to use this particular data to develop features as other revenue streams. Thus, automakers have continuously kept the infotainment systems in-house, until now that is. It’s important to note that Google will not mine any data without the consent of the driver and/or passengers – it is an opt-in data-mining opportunity.

The Alliance also benefits from this deal because they don’t have to continue spending their resources in developing their own software like many car manufacturers have been doing. Up until now, carmakers have been making their own software that supports an infotainment system via mirroring only, as opposed to making the software a truly integrated part of the vehicle. Mitsubishi, as part of the Alliance, will once again continue their tradition of making headway when it comes to cars and tech.

In the meantime, Mitsubishi will continue to feature their own Mitsubishi Connect services in their vehicles. Mitsubishi Connect currently has primary Bluetooth-enabled call and text capabilities complete with music pairing abilities, and two different packages – Safeguard and Remote packages- that are tailored to an individual driver’s needs. The Remote Services app is the closest thing that Mitsubishi currently has to an Android OS infotainment system – including its ability to be paired with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa-enabled devices when possible.

With consumer and automotive technology on the up swing, automakers are starting to get more involved in the digital age to connect with their consumer base. In 2016, when the Kia Niro was still on the production line, Kia advertised their hybrid crossover with a Facebook Messenger bot, the Niro Bot, to answer questions about the vehicle. In early 2018, soon after the 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL debuted, Jeep also released their “New Jeep Adventure App”, a virtual reality app that allowed consumers to configure, take pictures of, and virtually sit inside their own Jeep Wrangler JL. Now, Mitsubishi Motors is doing something similar to continue to raise sales for the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV by implementing augmented reality in dealerships, starting with Canada.

Canada is part of the North American market, although they may get various versions due to different federal regulations and what not. Why Mitsubishi is taking this technology to our neighbors of the north first is anyone’s guess, but it’s still a neat feature that can travel down to us in the next year or so. The augmented reality Mitsubishi dealerships will be using is actually an app developed for Mitsubishi North York, Ont.-based St. Joseph Communications.

The app is used to help sales people explain to customers the technology of the 2018 Outlander plug-in hybrid electric utility vehicle. All a salesperson needs to do is point the tablet towards a part of the plug-in that’s visible, say, the front tire. Once the app registers and locks into place, the app then allows the viewer to do a virtual walk around to see the vehicle from different positions via hyper-accurate tracking and registration coding techniques with tracking markers.

It’s been some time since we’ve heard Mitsubishi Motors discuss the return of their pickup truck line. The revival of the good ol’ Mitsubishi Triton was sort of teased when TopGear modified the L200 into a desert-capable truck, but that was the highlight of hints. Well, although we hate the paparazzi, we can’t help but love spy photos. In this round, a couple of spies grabbed shots of the Mitsubishi L200 pickup truck, the Triton, but with a bit of a facelift.

Double-cab prototypes of the Mitsubishi pickup truck revival were spotted recently with huge design changes. Compared to the picture of the Mitsubishi Triton above, the new design looks meaner and more aggressive than the common day pickup. Mitsubishi is aiming for a performance-based crossover for the new Mitsubishi Lancer crossover, but who’s to say a high-performance truck can’t also be in the cards?

The front fascia has been completely changed with a new take on the honeycomb-grille, thin headlights, and another set of lights below, most likely running day lights, in each corner above the front bumper. From the front or the side, the new truck looks pretty rugged overall, but not as bulky as its predecessor. The new truck is also looking bigger, and seeing as how this prototype is just starting the testing phase, there may not be any release dates until 2020 or more like 2022 with the Alliance 2022 six year plan in action.

2022 means more modern tech. With recent Mitsubishi Motors vehicles like the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross that have a smartphone link display system, we can expect to see similar or the same tech in the new Mitsubishi Triton, along with upgrades like Bluetooth or voice control systems and other on-board tech. We’ll also see some safety, maybe some of the new tech popping up in trucks today like trailer stability assist, sway control, maybe even a truck bed rear view camera so drivers can keep an eye on their cargo load.

In terms of performance, it’s a little too early to tell what kind of powertrain will be installed into the Mitsubishi pickup truck. Currently, the towing capacity goes up to 7,716 pounds, so to bring that up, Mitsubishi Motors may need to reach higher than a turbocharged 2.5-liter engine. A four-wheel drive system would also be a good addition with Mitsubishi Motors all-wheel control or super all-wheel control for handling all types of terrain.

Truth is, with spy shots of prototypes, anything can happen over the next few years. The good news is, once the new Mitsubishi L200/Triton pickup truck does hit the market, it’s planned to go global. Can it handle the competition from the likes of the Ford Ranger and Nissan Navara, though? Come 2022, we should know and so will you.
