A few weeks ago, we talked about all the good things there are to look forward to when it comes to the next generation of the Kia Sorento SUV. Kia Motors is one automaker that really emboldens the term “Sports Utility Vehicle”. Performance, style, a new X-Line appearance package, a 10.25-inch inch touchscreen with split-screen functionality, and a lot more. We listed “performance” first because Kia Motors is so excited about the new powertrain options, PR just dropped a full breakdown of each engine consumers can get under the hood of the new 2021 Kia Sorento.
There will be three engine options in total, two of which will be good ol’ internal combustion engines (ICE), running on pure gasoline to get the motor humming. Like many vehicles in the Kia Motors lineup, after years of success, and sometimes very quickly, a hybrid or plug-in hybrid version of the same vehicle pops up. The same is true for the Kia Sorento, entering the 2021 model year with a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) variant of the popular SUV. With seven trims with an ICE under the hood – nine trims in total with the two behind the plug-in hybrid lineup – let us break each option down for you.
The automobile industry is an ever-changing place, and although many automakers are leaning towards self-driving vehicles and autonomous cars, alternative fuel technology is still plugging away at the market, carving out a niche for itself that’s still growing. Sure, Kia Motors may have self-driving cars in five years, and Kia Motors has a cool learning-based smart cruise control system thanks to their involvement in the Hyundai Motor Group, but Kia Motors is also thinking green. Kia Motors has already stated that the automaker is set to become the next all-electric automaker with the new all-electric Kia Futuron concept. Plus, Hyundai Motors and Kia Motors together recently achieved a large milestone, having sold one million HEVs over the last ten years (and counting!) The best-selling HEV during that time was none other than the Kia Motors very own, the Kia Niro.
Kia Motors may have changed the industry the day the automaker released the Kia Niro, the world’s first hybrid subcompact crossover. The success of the hybrid crossover was so strong, Kia Motors released a plug-in hybrid variant of the Niro in quick succession. Now, the latest addition to the Kia Niro family is the Kia Niro EV, also known as the e-Niro overseas, and this electric subcompact crossover is already seeing much success.
Gasoline stations – your time has come. Mwahahahahaha! Seriously though, the electric car revolution has finally begun. Hybrid cars, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), also known as just electric vehicles (EVs) have sprung up in just about every automaker in the market today and now, they’re becoming more practical than ever. At first, consumers were wary of plug-in hybrids and EVs, worried they’ll be stranded without a local or nearby charging station. Not only is that a problem that’s slowly becoming extinct, but there’s a little place in Maryland that took the first step to revolutionize and converted the RS Automotives gas station into an electric car charging port. As the kids say, shots fired.
RS Automotives, found in Takoma Park, Maryland has ended its 61-year reign as a gas station and changed the business into a place for electric vehicles to recharge. Four of the pumps are being replaced by chargers able to push 200 kilowatts each. Not only is that perfect for most plug-in hybrid and EVs on the market today, with the capability of charging to 80-percent capacity in 20 to 30 minutes, but it fits perfectly with the goals of EVgo, the largest electric vehicle (EV) charging network in the United States. EVgo is currently working on installing 150 kW and 350 kW chargers around the country.
Which automaker has sold over one million hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) on a global scale in just ten years? Go on, take a guess…If you guessed Hyundai Motor or Kia Motors then you guessed right! A part of the Hyundai Motor Group, Kia Motors and Hyundai have achieved the 1-million milestone that all automakers achieve since Hyundai Motor released its first HEV model back in 2009, the Avante LPi hybrid. The Hyundai Motor Group sold 1,007,838 units after their large success in sales during the first half of 2019 – 117,109 units of HEV models. With the current growing hybrid market, another one million may be possible soon enough.
Let’s take a look at the growing demand for environmentally friendly cars over the last decade. The progressive new way of how consumers think about car buying may need more time to take roots in America but overseas, the world has embraced alternative fuel sources sevenfold. HEVs, also known as just a hybrid – not to be mistaken with plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) – have rapidly gained consumer attention and sales in the Korean car market. It’s here where total HEV sales helped auto giant Hyundai Motor Co. and its smaller sibling Kia Motors Corp. top 1 million units, with almost all of the HEVs sold in Korea either a Hyundai or Kia model.
Kia Motors is starting to revolutionize the auto industry. When the automaker released the 2018 Kia Stinger, it was the beginning of a new path for Kia and a wake up call to the auto market. Sports cars are still alive and well in this SUV and crossover-saturated market, but there’s still room for innovation. Back in 2017, the Hyundai Motor Group discussed hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and how Kia Motors will get their own. A part of the automotive group, many thought Kia Motors would follow Hyundai and place focus on a performance line after the success of the Stinger, but Kia Motors has placed their focus on a GT line instead and debuted this with their Kia Forte GT at SEMA 2018. Kia Motors is also known for innovative technology though, and isolated sound zone technology isn’t all – the next move for the Hyundai Motor Group is solar panel-equipped vehicles.
Solar panels on cars? When we think about it, this was a long time coming. We have hybrids, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and all-electric vehicles (EVs). With the need to charge the latter, consumers are constantly wary about needing to find a place to plug-in if driving an EV or getting the most mileage out of their PHEV. Although electric charging stations are popping up all around Miami, Florida and the rest of the nation, and apps like PlugShare exist, consumers still worry. Well, wouldn’t solar panels on the roof of a vehicle help with that?
News about Kia Motors new electric vehicle, the Kia Niro EV, keeps popping up as we get closer to its release date. What was first unveiled as a concept at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas quickly took off as a new production vehicle for Kia Motors to expand their alternative fuel vehicle lineup. First, the 2018 Kia Niro hybrid crossover came out in early-mid 2017, followed by the Kia Niro Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) at the very end of 2017, and now Kia is taking this crossover and going all electric – it could even be great competition for Tesla in the all-electric crossover market today.
We’ll see more of 2018 Kia Niro EV at the 2018 Paris Motor Show in September, but here’s what we know so far. The original concept of the Kia Niro EV was sporting a unique front bumper, an exclusive radiator grille, futuristic sporty air intake, arrowhead-shaped LED daytime running lights, and flush-mounted grille and subtle geometric pattern that houses the vehicle’s electric charging port. With Kia Motors working on wireless electric vehicle charging, they may not even need a port soon enough, but that technology is a little ways off at the moment. The rest of the concept design took a bit of a slim approach with a sleek profile, but also gives the EV an aggressive look to it.
First, the 2018 Kia Niro came out early-mid 2017. It was a bit of a showstopper, being the world’s first hybrid crossover. As Kia Motors usually does, if one of their vehicles does well, they tend to expand upon it with different powertrain options. With the Kia Niro already being a hybrid, the next logical step was to make a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), and voila! End of 2017, we got the Kia Niro PHEV. Now, an interesting turn of events, Kia Motors is finally adding another electric vehicle to their lineup. That’s right – the Kia Niro is getting its very own electric vehicle (EV) variant.
Details are still a bit dry, but here’s what we know so far. Kia Motors unveiled their all-electric version of Niro at the 5th International Electric Vehicle Expo in Jeju, Korea. The vehicle should appear again at the 2018 Paris Motor Show in September, so it’s safe to say the production of the vehicle is still a little ways away, but one can never be sure with how quickly Kia has been evolving as of late. The previous showing in Korea isn’t all that new though.

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, also known as plug-in hybrids and PHEVs, are making a lot of headway in the auto industry. Two automakers found here at Miami Lakes Automall, Kia Motors and Mitsubishi Motors, are really getting into the plug-in hybrid segment. With both automakers making alternative fuel vehicles, especially Kia, and new models planned for the future (hybrid SUVs by Mitsubishi Motors and the Kia Telluride), we thought we’d take a look at all the two offer. Prior to 2018, Kia Motors only had one plug-in hybrid – the Optima PHEV. Now that the Kia Niro PHEV is a out, a plug-in hybrid crossover, let’s compare both plug-ins with the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV.

All three vehicles being covered today have a plug-in hybrid system running the unit. Kia Motors has a name for its hybrid system, called a “Full Parallel Hybrid System” with the gasoline engine size as its prefix. For example, all 2018 Kia Niro Plug-in Hybrids are run by a 1.6L 4-cylinder engine and Full Parallel Hybrid System. One part of the powertrain is a 1.6-liter DOHC 4-cylinder engine, optimized via dual continuously variable valve timing (CVVT) and gasoline direct injection (GDI). The 1.6L engine generates 104 horsepower and 109 lb-ft of torque. The other part of the powertrain is an AC synchronous permanent magnet motor that generates 60 horsepower and 125 lb-ft of torque, powered by an 8.9 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery. When both parts of the powertrain work together, they can generate up to 139 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque.
Thinking of going green, but not sure how you feel about losing the ease of a normal vehicle with an internal combustion engine? Vehicles powered by gasoline have been around since the automotive industry began – it’s the kind of vehicle we know and we’re used to. So when it comes to going green, some consumers are a little shocked with the changes that come along with driving an alternative fuel vehicle. A typical hybrid may be a good transition, but it doesn’t do much for the environment. Plus, if going green, why not get some additional benefits than a pat on the shoulder? Because alternative fuel vehicles are still somewhat new to the general public, many people don’t understand hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and electric vehicles all that much. Plug-in hybrid and electric vehicle recharging are actually pretty easy to understand. Just like plugging in an appliance, the majority of the work is plugging in one’s car and navigating a menu to turn on the charger – not much different from pumping gas at the fuel station. Plus, in Miami, Florida, charging stations are popping up plenty.
When it comes to charging up the Kia Niro PHEV, consumers can install a 240V power outlet at their home to recharge the plug-in hybrid in just two and a half hours. If they wish to forego the installation, a normal 120V household electrical outlet (the same used for a phone charger) can be plugged in to charge the Niro PHEV overnight. Then there’s of course public charging stations as noted above.
A little while after Kia Motors released the Kia Niro, a hybrid crossover, they also started to tease the upcoming 2018 Kia Stonic and a plug-in hybrid variant of the Niro. There was no set release date, really very little talk about a Niro plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), so Kia Motors pulled a fast one when they released the 2018 Kia Niro PHEV over the holiday break. Now officially a part of the lineup, the Niro isn’t the only great crossover hybrid anymore.
The 2018 Kia Niro Plug-in Hybrid
Whenever a vehicle is called a plug-in hybrid, that means the vehicle can operate solely on gas from the internal combustion engine, an electric motor powered by a battery, or a combination of both. Because of that, the Niro PHEV has a larger battery than its counterpart, the Kia Niro. The Niro is equipped with a a 1.56 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery, whereas the Niro PHEV has an 8.9 kWh battery powering its motor. The internal combustion engine found in the Niro is the same engine in the Niro PHEV. Together, the engine and the motor produce 139 horsepower combined and 195 lb-ft of torque.
