The Kia Seltos is a compact SUV from Kia Corp that was first released in India and then went global. Soon after, the Seltos quickly made a name for itself, earning a spot on the Wards 10 Best UX list for 2020. Its popularity rising, the Seltos was almost a match for another SUV that shook the Kia Corp lineup – the Kia Telluride. Winning awards left and right, Kia released a special edition of the large SUV – the Kia Telluride Nightfall Edition. Like many automakers, there is always some sort of “blacked-out” package that makes everything, including the badges and decals, black. For 2022, the Kia Seltos joins the club with the Seltos NightFall Edition.

Sold as a new trim level, consumers won’t have to choose which trim to get if they’re just looking for the Nightfall aesthetic. This means getting gloss black roof rails and rugged side sills, a black grille, gloss black emblems – including the new “Kia” logo – with 18-inch matte black alloy wheels and possibly gloss black skid plates. If curious about the differences between this and the version on the Telluride, the Telluride came with some extra bits specific to the SUV and was an add-on package. This meant consumers could choose what trim level they wanted to add the package to. This package includes gloss black greenhouse trim/lower door side molding, gloss black front bumper side air-duct garnish, a new radiator grill in black, LED headlamps and fog lamps with black inner bezel, and 20-inch wheels.

On the one hand, having a trim level works. With the powertrain not changing much from last year, having a new style choice will draw some new consumers. A 2.0-liter DOHC inline four-cylinder engine able to produce 146 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque is a good start, but the Kia Seltos Nightfall Edition is locked into the 175hp 1.6-liter turbocharged engine with all-wheel drive (AWD). Whether the NightFall Edition will be available in other colors has not yet been discussed. This means having the above-mentioned components in black while having the rest of the body another color for contrast or to make those components stand out. When Kia offered the NightFall Edition on the Kia Telluride, consumers could also choose Snow White Pearl, Everlasting Silver, Gravity Gray, Ebony Black, Sangria, Black Copper, Dark Moss, and Wolf Gray for the paint job.

New style isn’t the only upgrade for the 2022 Kia Seltos. As always, Kia Corp is constantly making vehicles safer, and this year, every Kia Seltos gets the benefits of more standard advanced automatic safety features. These include forward collision avoidance, lane-keep assist, lane departure warning, driver attention warning, lane follow assist, and automatic high beams. This is a step up from last year, keeping many of the goodies from the base trim, the LX. Pricing for the 2022 Kia Seltos is estimated at $22,490 (plus destination fee), with the Nightfall Edition at $26,690 (plus destination fee). It’s a sweet deal for the turbocharged engine and AWD, plus the aesthetic appeal of a blacked-out compact SUV.

Kia Motors has been doing wonderfully this year, even with this temporary shutdown with the COVID-19 pandemic, this is an automaker that can bounce back and continue to reign in the good news. Some of this good news comes from recent awards and best of lists, but some of the largest news comes from automotive studies conducted by J.D. Power. At the beginning of July 2020, we got word of Kia Motors ranking as the highest non-luxury brand in the 2020 J.D. Power Initial Quality Study (IQS) for another year. Going on 34 years, the J.D. Power IQS tests the quality of new vehicles after 90 days of ownership. A second study quickly followed the IQS, the 2020 J.D. Power Automotive Performance Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study™, and Kia Motors had three more vehicles highlighted for receiving the highest ranks in their car segment.

Like the IQS, J.D. Power sends out thousands of surveys to owners and lessees of new model-year vehicles after 90 days of ownership. Now in its 25th year, the study was redesigned for 2020. This year, the study was modified to better measure an owners’ emotional attachment and level of excitement with their new vehicle across 37 attributes. The 2020 APEAL study was conducted between February 2020 to May 2020, and the data compiled is from a collection of 87,282 answered surveys. The survey results are then translated into the overall APEAL index score measured on a 1,000-point scale. Kia Motors received a score of 844.

Three vehicles from Kia Motors also store some of the spotlight during the 2020 APEAL Study. The Kia Telluride received the highest rank for the Upper Midsize SUV segment. Alongside the Telluride, the Kia Stinger was also the highest ranked vehicle for its segment, the Midsize Premium Car. Joining these vehicles was the Kia Rio, ranked third for the Small Car segment in the APEAL study.

“At Kia, we take pride in delivering a world-class ownership experience, whether customers are interested in driving a bold, capable three-row SUV like the Telluride, or the head-turning, powerful Stinger…We are honored to win not just one, but two segments in the APEAL study, which further reinforces the brand’s ‘Give It Everything’ approach to each model we build.” – Sean Yoon, President & CEO, Kia Motors America, Kia Motors North America

Shining a little more light on these vehicles, the Kia Telluride recently received the new Nightfall Edition, a type of “blacked-out” appearance package for the 2020 Kia Telluride. This includes gloss black elements such as gloss black roof rails, gloss black greenhouse trim/lower door side molding, gloss black skid plates, gloss black front bumper side air-duct garnish, gloss black emblems, all-new unique “Kia” logos, the radiator grill in black finish, LED headlamps and fog lamps with black inner bezels, and 20-inch wheels in black finish with black lug nuts and center caps. Although these components are all blacked-out, Kia does offer the 2020 Kia Telluride Nightfall Edition in Snow White Pearl, Everlasting Silver, Gravity Gray, Ebony Black, Sangria, Black Copper, Dark Moss, and Wolf Gray (new for Nightfall). Available on the Telluride EX with all-wheel drive (AWD) (with Premium package), SX AWD, and SX Prestige package, the Nightfall Edition is a perfect addition to the Telluride.

Although J.D. Power covered the 2020 Kia Stinger for the APEAL Study, the Kia Stinger is getting a mid-cycle refresh for 2021. Along with an upgraded 3.3L V6 engine capable of producing 380 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque, the Kia Stinger got a bit of a facelift to match the new Kia Motors style. Inside, a new fully digital instrument cluster is available, along with a 10.25-inch touchscreen and the UVO infotainment system. It’s a nice upgrade for the powerful sports car.

Summer is here and things are just starting to heat up. Yeah, you know it South Florida, and it’s going to be a hot one this year. Things don’t cool down much when the sunsets either, but Kia Motors is planning to bring some chill to the summer this year anyways with the upcoming 2020 Kia Telluride Nightfall Edition. It’s about time the Kia Telluride got its own special edition vehicle, with all of the awards and accolades tied to the name, the Kia Telluride is the largest SUV in the Kia Motors lineup and is known by many.

The most recent success for the 2020 Kia Telluride was being named the 2020 NEMPA Winter SUV of the Year by the New England Motor Press Association (NEMPA) during their annual Winter Vehicle Driving Event. This award is among being named MotorTrend’s SUV of the Year, “North American Utility Vehicle of the Year”, and Car and Driver’s 10 Best, earning the Telluride the “Triple Crown” of Automotive Awards, as well as being named World Car of the Year.
