Gasoline stations – your time has come. Mwahahahahaha! Seriously though, the electric car revolution has finally begun. Hybrid cars, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), also known as just electric vehicles (EVs) have sprung up in just about every automaker in the market today and now, they’re becoming more practical than ever. At first, consumers were wary of plug-in hybrids and EVs, worried they’ll be stranded without a local or nearby charging station. Not only is that a problem that’s slowly becoming extinct, but there’s a little place in Maryland that took the first step to revolutionize and converted the RS Automotives gas station into an electric car charging port. As the kids say, shots fired.
RS Automotives, found in Takoma Park, Maryland has ended its 61-year reign as a gas station and changed the business into a place for electric vehicles to recharge. Four of the pumps are being replaced by chargers able to push 200 kilowatts each. Not only is that perfect for most plug-in hybrid and EVs on the market today, with the capability of charging to 80-percent capacity in 20 to 30 minutes, but it fits perfectly with the goals of EVgo, the largest electric vehicle (EV) charging network in the United States. EVgo is currently working on installing 150 kW and 350 kW chargers around the country.
With Kia Motors promising a lot of changes in the few years with their “Imagine by Kia” presentation at the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show, they’re also putting some upgraded models on display. Set to come out in 2020 for the United States, some tweaked hybrid models will be getting a facelift for some new style. Most notably, with their current success, the Kia Niro hybrid crossover and Kia Niro Plug-in Hybrid crossover will be getting some new fresh style inside and out, along with new tech and safety features to increase the already great quality of each. What better way than to debut both at the Geneva Motor Show?
Based on the visuals, it seems like the Kia Niro and Kia Niro Plug-in Hybrid are adopting some aesthetics from their upcoming electric counterpart, the Kia Niro EV (e-Niro in UK markets). That tends to happen, improving on already great designs after the second or third attempt. The cabins have also been improved with new interior materials and infotainment technology. It even includes some telecommunications upgrades.
Kia Motors is currently blowing up with alternative fuel vehicles. Most recently would be the 2020 Kia Soul EV that shared center stage with the 2020 Kia Soul at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show. We’ve been hearing a whole heck of a lot of good news about the Kia Niro EV, also known as the e-Niro overseas, and are patiently waiting for it to be added to the North American lineup. Before that happens though, we’ve already received some more good news. Receiving the “Car of the Year Award” by consumer magazine and website What Car?, the Kia Niro EV is the first Korean car to win the prestigious award.

The competition took place in Britain, since the vehicle has yet to make much headway with Kia Motors North America just yet. Out of 23 competitors, including vehicles powered by gasoline, diesel, and even hybrids, the fully-charged zero-emissions Kia won out over all of them. Going on sale in the UK on April 1, 2019, a release date for American sales has yet to be released, but based on the cost in euros prior to the £3,500 taxpayer-funded plug-in grant subsidy for buyers of ultra-low emission vehicles, it comes out to around $$41,000. That feels a bit steep given the Niro Plug-in Hybrid has a starting MSRP of only $28,500 (plus destination fee).
During fall of 2018, we received more news about the three Kia Niro crossovers. There’s the original Kia Niro hybrid crossover, released in 2017, followed by the Kia Niro plug-in hybrid crossover by the end of 2018. Coming soon is an all-electric version of the Kia Niro, the Kia Niro EV. We got some great news about the interior of the Kia Niro EV and its all-electric range. Now with news about its recent recordings for the Europe model, we wonder if Kia Motors is still running tests and optimizing this electric crossover, or have the numbers for the U.S. been solidified?
Last time we discussed the Kia Niro EV, the powertrain had changed a bit from its original debut. For the Niro EV, Kia developed a next-generation electric vehicle powertrain with two options for consumers to choose from. The standard setup was a 39.2 kWh battery system that can travel 150 miles emissions free, but consumers can opt-in for the high-capacity 64 kWh lithium-polymer battery pack for 280 miles! That’s pretty great for an electric vehicle.
With the impressive range of the Kia Niro EV, 280 miles, and other electric vehicles by Kia Motors, like the 2018 Kia Soul EV, we thought we’d brush up on electric vehicles 101 and drop some knowledge. We’ve covered electric vehicle charging and the misconceptions about plug-in hybrid vehicles before. But with many people in North America still unsure how hybrid and electric technology works, it might be a good time to inform the masses about all the benefits an electric vehicle can bring. Here are five things to know about electric cars.
Driving an electric car will feel a lot more differently than a vehicle powered by the standard internal combustion engine. Not only is an electric vehicle (EV) more silent, although some automakers install a program to mimic an engine noise for consumers who prefer to hear the motor running, but the pull of a gas-powered vehicle when the engine gets going is nearly non-existent. Electric vehicles don’t need to “power up” to get going – all the power they need is already available.
How to drive EVs are also changing the game. With the way technology is moving, one-pedal powertrains are becoming commonplace. A one-pedal powertrain means the cockpit only comes with one pedal and an emergency brake pedal. To accelerate or to decelerate, the driver puts pressure on or alleviates pressure from the accelerator like usual, but when decelerating with a one-pedal powertrain, the car will be brought to a stop naturally. The emergency brake pedal is available for instances where the driver needs to stop immediately. Plus, many alternative fuel vehicles come with regenerative braking to recharge the battery when bringing the vehicle to a stop.
It’s crazy how the automarket is suddenly shifting into alternative fuel vehicles. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles have finally turned over to making hybrids and electric vehicles, whereas Chevrolet and Kia Motors are only improving upon their current vehicles. Just like when Chrysler made the first plug-in hybrid minivan with the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, Kia Motors made the first hybrid crossover, the Kia Niro. Soon after, in late 2017, Kia released a plug-in hybrid variant of the Niro, and soon, we’ll be getting an electric vehicle (EV) variant of the crossover, as updates about the Kia Niro EV continue to pour in.
The first of its kind, the Kia Niro crossover is a hybrid vehicle. Powered by a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder and Full Parallel Hybrid System, the powertrain is made up of a 1.6-liter DOHC 4-cylinder engine optimized with Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT) and Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) for improved performance and fuel efficiency. Coupled with the engine is an AC Synchronous Permanent Magnet Motor, powered by a 1.56 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery. Combined, the powertrain can generate 139 horsepower and 196 lb-ft of torque. All trims are paired to a dual-clutch six-speed automatic transmission with Sportmatic.
When the electric vehicle variation of the Kia Niro debuted at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), there was a lot of interesting information to learn. Kia Motors just keeps pushing the envelope when it comes to their alternative fuel vehicle lineup, continuously expanding it whenever they have a winner on their hands. We can’t complain – honestly, it feels good to go green, and if we can drive a fancy car and help the environment, then why not? During the initial debut, the Kia Niro EV was just a concept, and much of the interior was like a cardboard cut-out. Recently, a more fine-tuned prototype of the Kia Niro EV was revealed in Busan, South Korea, and a savvy commentator, Jose Guerrero, took the chance to make a video and upload it for everyone to enjoy. Recap of the Powertrain Details
During the initial debut of the Kia Niro EV concept, the powerain details were pretty hush-hush at the 2018 CES in Las Vegas. Kia called it a “next-generation electric powertrain [with] new production technologies earmarked for near-future EVs from Kia [with a 64 kWh battery] paired to a powerful 150-kilowatt ([200-horsepower]) electric motor.” With an entirely new 64-kilowatt-hour battery pack and a rated 238 miles of range, that’s not too bad for an all-electric vehicle. That’s the same range for the 2018 Chevrolet Bolt EV.
So the Kia Niro EV concept is said to share the longest-range of an affordable electric car with the Chevy Bolt EV. The concept had some style changes, doing away with the tiger-nose grille, and replacing it with a pair of very thin lamps and a smooth, front bumper with a recharging outlet on the driver’s side of the front fascia. Kia said the interior would have a “”pure, minimalist, and digital [approach to provide] an innate sense of space and calm [while inside the car].”
Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, also known as plug-in hybrids and PHEVs, are making a lot of headway in the auto industry. Two automakers found here at Miami Lakes Automall, Kia Motors and Mitsubishi Motors, are really getting into the plug-in hybrid segment. With both automakers making alternative fuel vehicles, especially Kia, and new models planned for the future (hybrid SUVs by Mitsubishi Motors and the Kia Telluride), we thought we’d take a look at all the two offer. Prior to 2018, Kia Motors only had one plug-in hybrid – the Optima PHEV. Now that the Kia Niro PHEV is a out, a plug-in hybrid crossover, let’s compare both plug-ins with the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV.

All three vehicles being covered today have a plug-in hybrid system running the unit. Kia Motors has a name for its hybrid system, called a “Full Parallel Hybrid System” with the gasoline engine size as its prefix. For example, all 2018 Kia Niro Plug-in Hybrids are run by a 1.6L 4-cylinder engine and Full Parallel Hybrid System. One part of the powertrain is a 1.6-liter DOHC 4-cylinder engine, optimized via dual continuously variable valve timing (CVVT) and gasoline direct injection (GDI). The 1.6L engine generates 104 horsepower and 109 lb-ft of torque. The other part of the powertrain is an AC synchronous permanent magnet motor that generates 60 horsepower and 125 lb-ft of torque, powered by an 8.9 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery. When both parts of the powertrain work together, they can generate up to 139 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque.
Thinking of going green, but not sure how you feel about losing the ease of a normal vehicle with an internal combustion engine? Vehicles powered by gasoline have been around since the automotive industry began – it’s the kind of vehicle we know and we’re used to. So when it comes to going green, some consumers are a little shocked with the changes that come along with driving an alternative fuel vehicle. A typical hybrid may be a good transition, but it doesn’t do much for the environment. Plus, if going green, why not get some additional benefits than a pat on the shoulder? Check out the new Kia Niro PHEV if you are ready to take the plunge.
Because alternative fuel vehicles are still somewhat new to the general public, many people don’t understand hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and electric vehicles all that much. Plug-in hybrid and electric vehicle recharging are actually pretty easy to understand. Just like plugging in an appliance, the majority of the work is plugging in one’s car and navigating a menu to turn on the charger – not much different from pumping gas at the fuel station. Plus, in Miami, Florida, charging stations are popping up plenty.
When it comes to charging up the Kia Niro PHEV, consumers can install a 240V power outlet at their home to recharge the plug-in hybrid in just two and a half hours. If they wish to forego the installation, a normal 120V household electrical outlet (the same used for a phone charger) can be plugged in to charge the Niro PHEV overnight. Then there’s of course public charging stations as noted above.
You guys remember the Kia Telluride concept we posted about awhile back? It’s a futuristic-looking hybrid SUV with technologies that go way beyond some of the stuff we’re seeing pop up in automobiles today. Kia surprised the automarket when it came out with the Kia Niro, the world’s first hybrid crossover. Then, Kia Motors pulled a fast one and released the Kia Niro Plug-in Hybrid (also known as a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, PHEV) without any promotions whatsoever. Just bam! There it is.
Seems a hybrid SUV is next on the list of their alternative fuel and green vehicles, and that brings us to the Kia Telluride. It was initially a concept at the 2016 North American International Auto Show in Detroit (2016 Detroit Auto Show). At the time, it was a little boxy in shape, had suicide doors, the signature Kia tiger-nose grille, a spacious cabin, and three rows of seats. A year later, the concept went live on the Kia Motors website, and the new design is taking some cues from the Kia Stinger. With more of a swooped-back roofline, a design quickly becoming popular, such is the look for the new 2019 Kia Forte as well, having debuted at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show.
